Chapter 25 Hail
Jiang Shi'an closed his eyes. "Take my car."

Song Jinhe was taken aback. "Aren't you looking for a place to stay?"

"It won't make a difference if I stay a couple more days." Anyway, he doesn't have anything else to do right now.

"It still needs to be replaced. This car will be more suitable if I need to hit someone again."

Before the apocalypse, she was timid and hesitant when driving, afraid of getting points deducted or having an accident that would break her heart. But after arriving in the apocalypse, she dared to drive either humans or zombies.

"Give it to me." Jiang Shi'an rolled up his sleeves, revealing a section of his fair arm, and took the tools from her hand. "Your hand is almost healed, so don't move it."

Song Jinhe left the bloodstained clothes in the car. If Cheng Yan and the others arrived here, they would know she was nearby when they saw the car and the clothes.

I didn't leave any other marks, for fear that others might use them.

Just as noon approached, dark clouds gathered again, and a light rain began to fall. This kind of overcast and rainy weather, with temperatures between two and three degrees Celsius, is both damp and cold, making it the most uncomfortable.

It's mid-May now, and the temperature in Wucheng is usually around 30 degrees Celsius at this time.

Song Jinhe put on a used piece of clothing she had scavenged under her warm windbreaker, took a thermos she had bought for free at the supermarket, brewed some red dates and goji berries, and sat comfortably in the car.

They found a hardware store with a fairly complete selection.

Hammers, saws, nails, crowbars, and so on were all available. Song Jinhe stocked up on five crowbars at once.

This thing can be smashed and stabbed, it's sturdy and durable, it can break windows and pry open doors, the only downside is that it's a bit heavy.

She also took two sets of machetes, axes, and woodworking tools, as well as a large roll of barbed wire.

Jiang Shi'an noticed that she took things in a clear and organized manner, and even picked out a small iron shovel and a harpoon. She didn't just take everything she saw, regardless of whether she needed it or not.

It appears that the space capacity is limited.

The space for these tools is enough to take away all the anti-inflammatory drugs from the dental clinic; not doing so leaves room for others to survive.

The floodwaters in the city have receded, and the ground is covered with a thick layer of silt, in addition to corpses and debris.

The neighborhood is no longer suitable for living. The water had previously reached the fourth floor, and the zombies climbed up to the fourth floor while submerged in the water.

The cold air reeked of a foul stench. The supermarkets and pharmacies that had been there were all flooded, and even if the food inside looked intact, it was no longer edible.

Some people risked going out to collect fish and snails stuck to the corners of the walls. They went back, cooked and ate them, and that very night their entire family was wiped out, and a few more zombies appeared in the building.

The survivors who had been observing the situation completely abandoned their wishful thinking of going to the water to find food, and began packing their things to leave, either to go to a shelter or to seek refuge with relatives and friends.

"Old Li's family was really farsighted. A couple of days ago, before the floodwaters had even receded, they put basins in tires to make boats and rowed out. If only we had gone with them, what if we had stepped on something on the road and caught a disease?"

"What's the point of saying all this now? Everyone should wear warm clothes tomorrow and bring out all the tall rain boots in the house." The man with glasses opened a city map.

They no longer pay attention to the neighbors who were taken in by their parents two weeks ago and moved into their home.

-

Song Jinhe still couldn't find Cheng Yan and the others. The weather was getting colder and colder, even dropping below zero in the morning, and the leaves were covered with a layer of ice.

Two groups of people have come to loot supplies in the past few days, including the people we met at the tavern earlier.

To keep warm, they wore several ill-fitting clothes layered together, their hair sticky and shiny. This time, Song Jinhe saw a familiar face among them.

Cai Zheng realized that the other party knew her and was hanging out with the group of people from the hospital. She said that Nanhe District was indeed blocking her way.

Song Jinhe pulled up her mask, squatted behind a trash can, and watched them rob a car. Ignoring the victim's kneeling, crying, and begging, they raised a knife and killed him. She was planning to kill them first, and before she could even light the Molotov cocktail, she suddenly felt something hit her head.

Song Jinhe reacted quickly, covering her head and hiding under the eaves, while also pulling Jiang Shi'an, who had just arrived, back inside.

Hailstones the size of ostrich eggs came crashing down, knocking over plastic trash cans and shattering ice into pieces on the ground.

Bang, bang——

Hail kept falling, and a short, fat man in Cai Zheng's group had his head smashed open and died on the spot.

"Holy crap! Let's get out of here, forget about them!"

The group hurriedly returned to their car, stepped on the gas, and sped off one after another. The car in front of them had a sunroof, which was smashed open by a large hailstone.

A series of wailing screams erupted from inside the car, followed by a sharp scraping sound as the car crashed into the roadside guardrail and overturned in mid-air.

"Help me, help me!" the driver pleaded with his companion in the other car.

The people in the other car didn't even look at him, and sped past, afraid that if they were too slow, they wouldn't be able to get back either.

The nearby houses are dilapidated and there's nowhere to spend the night. With the hail so heavy, who would dare go down to rescue people?

Before long, a patch of ice of varying sizes accumulated on the ground. As time went on, the hail became more frequent and the temperature dropped rapidly.

The roof above Song Jinhe's head, which was already rotten, was now riddled with holes, and ice shards splashed onto her face.

The zombie outside wanted to eat, but it was crushed to death before it could even get close.

The exposed skin around her eyes stung from the cold wind. Song Jinhe put her hands in her pockets and moved closer to Jiang Shi'an, whose height provided good protection from the wind.

Jiang Shi'an looked down at her small movements and her long eyelashes damp with moisture, and silently turned his shoulder to block the cold wind outside.

The hail lasted for almost half an hour before it stopped.

Song Jinhe went outside and found that the person who had just been robbed was dead. There were still people alive in the overturned car. The car body had shielded him from the hail, but he was stuck in the driver's seat and couldn't move.

Seeing someone approaching, he quickly cried out for help, "Help, help me!"

"Answer a few questions for me first." Song Jinhe squatted down, her gaze kind. "Where are you from? How many of you are there?"

“There’s a hotel not far ahead,” the young man replied eagerly. “There are about a dozen people there.”

"That's not what I was asking." Song Jinhe made a move to leave.

“Don’t go! We came from the main city. It wasn’t my idea to rob them. It was those people who abandoned me. I’m not like them. I just want to survive.” The young man spoke with tears streaming down his face, his eyes full of sincerity.

"What are you doing here?" Song Jinhe asked again.

The young man looked outside and could only see a pair of long legs standing next to Song Jinhe. His voice trembled as he asked uncertainly, "You'll rescue me, right?"

"Of course, as long as you answer truthfully," Song Jinhe said, her tone unchanged.

"I couldn't stay in the city any longer, so I came here with them. Do you have a place to stay? I can join you," the young man said earnestly.

"That doesn't make sense. Didn't you come out here to find someone?"

Amid the young man's shocked gaze, Song Jinhe smiled slightly, "Have you found it? This is the last chance."
