Chapter 24 Dawn
"Do you think that's a person?"

Cheng Yan looked in the direction she pointed. On the second floor of the dormitory building opposite, there was a humanoid object crawling on the wall. It looked clumsy and eerie, and the scene made people's scalp tingle.

"No, they're zombies!" Cheng Yan gasped.

It makes sense that they encountered special zombies, and different kinds of them as well.

"Go inside, be careful. The cries for help are coming from the fourth floor across the street. There's probably something else there."

The commotion across the street is too loud and will attract all the zombies in the vicinity. The zombies can't climb up the high-rise buildings for the time being, but they can come in here!
Zhang Yi nodded, took a flashlight, and followed Cheng Yan into the innermost windowless storage room.

She and Cheng Yan arrived last night. When they drove onto the side road, they found that a chain of car crashes had blocked the road ahead.

As darkness fell, the zombies inside the car began to crawl out, drawn by the scent of humans.

Having no other choice, they packed their bags and left the highway to find a place to spend the night, planning to return at dawn.

They walked through the night, their shoes growing heavier with the wet mud. After passing a row of old houses ravaged by the storm, they found no place to take shelter. However, they heard many zombie sounds from under the ruins, all of whom were trapped underneath and had not yet been rescued.

After finally arriving at the factory, they found the iron gate to the dormitory across the street locked, so they stayed in the empty infirmary.

Who knew it wouldn't get light at all, and the temperature dropped again, probably only five or six degrees Celsius. We couldn't light a fire, and the place was empty and drafty.

It was alright that we could hold out until dawn, but not long after, something else happened outside.

Hearing the terrified screams from the other side, Zhang Yi sat trembling in the corner, pulling her two coats tighter around her.

-

The next day, eight o'clock in the morning.

Before dawn, Song Jinhe demonstrated her bad luck firsthand. Her hand injury hadn't healed yet, and her lower abdomen started to ache again—an unavoidable physiological problem.

She did have her daily necessities, but she even burned mugwort leaves in the bathroom to mask the smell, making herself quite choked by the smoke. Anyone who didn't know better would think she was cultivating immortality when they saw the swirling smoke.

The physical changes of gifted individuals are evident in this matter; physiological problems affecting survival will gradually be resolved. For example, she recovered to normal in less than a day, becoming as light as a feather and able to go out and fight a few zombies.

Jiang Shi'an handed over a cup of hot water, "The milk here is all expired, there's only water."

"Thank you." Song Jinhe held the glass in one hand and looked at the person opposite her.

In this environment, they could only see each other's dark silhouettes and the swaying shadows of trees outside the window.

Song Jinhe, wrapped in a blanket, lay diagonally on the sofa and fell asleep without realizing it.

When I woke up, it was already daylight, and the horde of zombies had already left.

Song Jinhe found a thermometer in a coffee shop and promptly put it into her spatial storage and took it with her.

She also took some coffee beans, tea bags, and sugar packets from the shop, but didn't want the fresh milk that had separated into layers twenty days past its expiration date.

While she was doing these things, Jiang Shi'an watched, holding the coffee he had brewed from burning books.

He saw the Molotov cocktails that suddenly appeared when they were fighting zombies yesterday, and Song Jinhe was too lazy to pretend.

They went back to the tavern, where there were still a few living zombies, their skin charred black, and a disgusting smell of flesh emanating from their cracks.

They lay on the ground, their bodies stuck together, and when they saw living people passing by, their withered fingers still scratched at them.

These zombies that can't stand up aren't much of a threat and are easy to clear out. What you need to watch out for are those zombies that look dead but aren't actually dead yet, just waiting for someone to grab them and bite them.

You can never skimp on finishing off an enemy; Song Jinhe just killed one like that.

She cleared out a lot of unburnt liquor from the warehouse and intact beer bottles from outside. Jiang Shi'an, wearing gloves, went upstairs and found the bodies of the bats and screaming zombies from last night. "Did you find anything?" Song Jinhe asked curiously, glancing upstairs.

"Bats are a new mutated species. The screaming zombies you mentioned look no different from ordinary zombies, but the muscle tissue near their vocal cords is significantly different."

Jiang Shi'an said slowly, "Without testing equipment, we can't see anything."

After leaving the tavern, the two went to the only small supermarket in the area. Song Jinhe didn't even have to lift a finger against the few ordinary zombies, but Jiang Shi'an took care of them.

The supermarket was filled with an unbearable heat; the frozen meat had spoiled, and there were human remains and scraps of flesh on the floor.

Song Jinhe went inside and found two hoses; from now on, she would have to rely on these to get gasoline from abandoned cars.

She had long since run out of things like biscuits, instant noodles, canned food, and band-aids. After searching for a long time, she finally found half a box of luncheon meat that was nearing its expiration date at the very back.

Then she went to another shelf and found a barbecue grill and smokeless charcoal.

Song Jinhe took two boxes of charcoal, totaling twenty jin, and walked through the fresh food section, enduring the stench. Looking at the fish in the tanks that had turned belly up due to lack of oxygen, she sighed several times in regret.

The meat was perfectly fine, but now it's all rotten.

Jiang Shi'an looked at her with a pained expression, as if she had lost something important, and placed the shopping basket in front of her. "Even if there were live fish in this kind of environment, you wouldn't dare to eat them."

Song Jinhe took a big bite of the biscuit with resentment and followed behind as they walked out of the supermarket. "We'll split the food we found in the supermarket when we get back."

"You can keep it," Jiang Shi'an said calmly. "It's not something you can carry around."

"So what are your plans after this? Are you going back to the city?" Song Jinhe wondered if Cheng Yan and the others had come out yet.

If Jiang Shi'an still intends to go to the city, they can go together.

"Let's find a place to stay first. There's a villa area 46 kilometers away." Jiang Shi'an turned his head. "The Luozhou shelter hasn't fallen yet, but it's too far from Wucheng, and the road isn't easy to travel."

Song Jinhe knew that he was reminding her.

The Los Angeles shelter was built after the Los Angeles base fell. At this stage, many people have gone through great hardships to get to Los Angeles but still can't get in.

Her memories of those three years ended on the eve of her arrival in Los Angeles; the route had changed, and she had no idea what the future held.

"After finding a replacement tire and gasoline, I will search the surrounding area for my lost companions."

"What if we can't find it?" Jiang Shi'an asked softly, "Aren't you coming with me?"

"If we can't find it, we'll keep looking. The floodwaters in the city have mostly receded, but I still have supplies to find." Song Jinhe said without hesitation.

“When I was half-dead from a high fever, they didn’t know about my talent awakening, but they didn’t abandon me. At least they had to look for me first before they could let me go.”

She might survive the apocalypse alone, but she wouldn't live a very good life.

Teamwork is the key to survival; even the strongest individual cannot defeat a team or a large horde of zombies.

Over the next few days, Song Jinhe found a lot of useful things and gasoline.

The stitches on my right hand have been removed, but the wound hasn't healed properly, so I still need to take care of it.

"Your car is already wrecked like this, is it really necessary to change the tires?" Jiang Shi'an looked at the car, which looked like it had been bombed, implying that the car absolutely had to be driven.

"You seem to have forgotten the scene when you blew up Scarface's car and the zombie carcasses rained down on my head. Look, this head is still hanging on it."
