Chapter 59 The Bad Luck Ends

Chapter 59 The Bad Luck Ends

As Cardenas shifted his aura, Lin An immediately used Zomo's ability to move to a different location.

When he came to his senses again, he found himself in a level-three controlled ward. Lin An pushed open the door and walked towards the noisy area. A familiar figure came into view, with a cascade of orange curly hair appearing and disappearing in the shadows.

"Mishi!"

Upon hearing this, the orange-haired woman turned her head and stared wide-eyed at her green eyes.

"Forest!"

Her shouts attracted the attention of the people around her, who all looked at Lin An who was running towards them.

"Stand there!" Captain Reagan of the group shouted sternly, while Vanessa also used a floating hand to block Lin An's path. "How do you prove your identity?"

Lin An held the Zomo rabbit in his arms high above his head: "20 points, remember to transfer them to my black card afterwards."

“Uh…” The captain was embarrassed. Vanessa took the black card Lin An handed over, examined it, and nodded to the captain. “It is indeed Lin from Mr. Lloyd’s team.”

The crimson hand returned the black card to Lin An, brushed the dust off his shoulder, and let him get closer.

"Where did you go? Why is no one answering the communication devices?" the captain asked with a hint of doubt. "The defense team said they saw you from afar, but quickly lost track of you."

“Captain Reagan, please take this rabbit away quickly.” Lin An sighed. “As everyone knows, once Delta-027 is out of control, it’s inseparable from me. Sensing the threat from the outside world, it keeps taking me to escape from one space after another.”

"It's been twenty minutes, why hasn't anyone seen you in the melee?"

“Because I randomly appear in various narrow spaces such as sewers, tea rooms, and hospital wards, every time I want to meet up with others, Zomo feels threatened and teleports me away as well.” Lin An blinked. “If you had just tried to kill me, I would have performed another ‘disappearance’.”

Mishi chimed in, "Lin, you've had it tough too."

“I see.” Reagan gestured to Hector beside him to grab the struggling Zomo. “I misunderstood you, Lin. Please understand, this is a necessary step to prevent shapeshifters from infiltrating the Foundation.”

"It's okay, I don't mind." Lin An turned to Mi Xi, "Where's our captain?"

“All I know is that Barry was with the defense team, helping the research department evacuate,” Mish replied.

“Mr. Lloyd is with the Retribution Squad dealing with the [Great Sea Serpent] and [Basilisk] outside,” Vanessa interjected. “This is too dangerous for you. Please join us to control the out-of-control mystics scattered throughout the building.”

It seems the senior student didn't participate in this attack.

Lin An secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

"Ok."

He noticed that Caroline, who was usually the "talkative one," was sullen and hanging her head with a vacant look in her eyes. Vanessa took out one hand and kept patting her back, seemingly to comfort her. Lin An couldn't help but wonder.

What's up with her?
At the same time, Lin An also discovered that Mi Xi was surrounded by energy, indicating that she had awakened.

I wonder what her mystery is.

With a formidable enemy at hand, there was no time for leisurely reminiscing. A loud crash of shattering glass echoed from the corridor ahead, and Reagan was enveloped in smoke, which then enveloped the group.

"Excuse my boldness, newlyweds, follow in our footsteps."

The black mist had a cool, smooth feel, like silk, like jumping into a mountain spring in winter, which made Lin An feel inexplicably refreshed.

Unlike Zomo's teleportation, there was no sense of rapid spatial retreat or world-turning during the journey. Lin An's vision went black, and he quickly arrived at his destination.

What came into view was a nightmarish scene.

Something maliciously hovered at the end of the corridor, accompanied by a horrifying knocking sound. It moved its clumsy body with its tentacles, and a huge black bubbling "spot" approached the group. Its tentacles danced wildly, constantly changing the creature's shape and forming new limbs.

An unnamed organ throbbed, emitting sounds of incomprehensible meaning.

"Tecleli! Tecleli!"

[Name]: Shoggoth

[Rating]: Disaster Level E

Radiation level: 25.2%
[Pollution Level]: 69.4%
[Medium]: Lord of the Earth
The panel showed the top of a monster's head. This was the first time Lin An had seen a mysterious being related to Cthulhu. Normal people cannot control these indescribable prototypes; a slight mistake could cause them to lose their minds immediately.

But its strength is beyond doubt.

Even Cardenas was whipped so badly by the tentacles that he had little chance to fight back, and he escaped by relying on the paralysis of the white light, the healing of the robe, and the cutting of the branches.

Shoggoth doesn't understand any known human languages, so Cardenas can't control it with Hebrew.

This is equivalent to disabling half of the Oath Angel's abilities.

"Tekeli! Tekeli—"

The strange noise stopped when they saw the Foundation group, with Shoggoth and the Foundation surrounding Cardenas from the front and back.

A blinding light shone from within the entangled organs of tentacles.

"The Ghost...?" Reagan stared in surprise at Cardenas, who was dressed in a white robe and whose features and figure were obscured. "Wasn't the Ghost cooperating with the Witch? Why would Shoggoth attack him?"

"The traitor is in the logistics department, which means that the intelligence we received before was full of errors," Vanessa said calmly. "It seems that the ghost and the witch are not in cahoots."

"What are you talking about? Isn't that the Logistics Minister, Jorna Cardenas?" Mish, whose radiation level was low, blurted out.

She couldn't sense "Comos's" energy; she could only see a man covered in blood and in a sorry state. The four of them were stunned for a moment, then suddenly realized what was going on.

"So Ghost had been lurking within the Foundation all along! No wonder we couldn't track him down!"

"Damn it! I'm not a ghost!!!"

The series of misfortunes drove Cardenas to a state of near madness. Even with the healing power of the angels, he could no longer endure the dual torment of mind and body, and roared hoarsely.

"The Free Mystics, a bunch of black-and-white worms! The Foundation, you're just a bunch of low-intelligence ants! Useless! All of you are useless!"

“Whether he is the real Ghost or not, he betrayed the Foundation.” Vanessa lifted her thick robe, and Hector exhaled a breath of hot air, his throat making a hoarse sound. “Captain, please give the order.”

"Control the squad and kill Jonah Cadenas."

"Kill...revenge..."

At this moment, Shoggoth seemed to have reached some kind of consensus with the control team.

Kill Cardenas first!
Shoggoth extended an endless stream of tentacles, which swiftly attacked the fleeing Cadenas.

A flash of white light, the magic paralyzing Shoggoth's movements, but as soon as Cardenas turned his head, Hector used his hands and feet to cling to the wall and climbed up to the ceiling at an incredible angle.

The Mystic's muscles bulged, and Cardenas, thinking Hector was a melee fighter, gripped the branch tightly with his right hand and made a vow gesture with his left, preparing to kill him in the same way he had killed Wendigo.

Unexpectedly, Hector steadied his lower body, and his energy transformed into a blowgun, which he aimed at Cardenas's head, from which dozens of tiny poison needles shot out with a "whoosh".

Even though Cardenas changed his gestures and pulled his white robe tighter to protect his body, a needle still pierced his skin through the gap.

Double images appeared before my eyes for a moment.

As dizziness struck, he was greeted by a flurry of floating hands, their deep blue color radiating burning heat, reaching out from all directions.

Cardenas quickly rolled on the ground, barely dodging the attacks of several floating hands. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his calf. It turned out that a hand sliding down the ground had touched his calf.

The wound ignited like a collapsing black hole, absorbing his reason and memories.

"Damn it, haven't you ever thought about what St. Anilov—the foundation you belong to—is actually doing?"

Cardenas couldn't help but curse, desperately waving his branches to create an arc-shaped protective shield around himself.

Vanessa wanted to press her advantage, but her floating hand was grazed by a branch, as if it had touched a blade that could cut through iron like mud, and one of her fingers fell to the ground.

"Well!"

Vanessa grunted, stomped her high heels hard on the ground, and changed her attack strategy with her floating hand.

“Do you really think an organization the size of St. Anilov is a ‘foundation’ with charitable and non-profit purposes?!”

Hector, who was above, took a deep breath.

"Vanessa, I'll cover you!"

Dozens of poison needles shot at Cardenas again, but were knocked away by the fruit on the branches. The energy dissipated and ripples spread, immediately creating an opening in his defense.

Vanessa seized the opportunity, her floating hand reaching in, and another flame bloomed on Cardenas's shoulder.

His white robe was already riddled with holes, black charred marks filled the air, and his skin was burned away, revealing bright red flesh.

"Tekelili..."

Shoggoth's organs wriggled, breaking free from the white light's restraints, accompanied by a stench-filled wind that howled in.

Cardenas completely lost his mind. His vision was blurry, and the weightlessness made everything spin. He felt so nauseous that he just wanted to vomit, so he simply poked his eye with his finger and gouged out the eyeball connected to the nerves and blood vessels.

"Can you make a fortune by researching superpowers and maintaining peace?"

Tentacles wrapped around his legs, and Cardenas collapsed to his knees with a thud, two lines of bloody tears streaming from his eyes. He let out a piercing scream, squeezing out a sharp syllable from between his teeth.

"Hahaha, you are nothing but a drop of water in the vast ocean of St. Anilov's business!"

"Pfft!"

Vanessa's angular hand pierced his chest. Cardenas stared at her with wide, angry eyes, his black, eyeless holes staring back at her. His maniacal laughter echoed wildly before finally fading away.

Everything fell silent.

She lifted her high heels and kicked the man to the ground.

"Gu..."

Shoggoths made a sticky sound as the two Cthulhu mystics stared at each other across Cadenas's corpse.

"In any case, I will carry out my mission."

She seemed to be talking to herself, as if speaking to the dead Cardenas, or as if addressing everyone present.

"The foundation's approach protects civilians, which is more important than punishing criminals. Crime is so frequent in this world that it is impossible to punish everyone. However, if the safety of the innocent cannot be guaranteed, it will be the end of modern social order."
