Ke-style law enforcement officers

Chapter 92's approach is correct.

Chapter 92's approach is correct.

In fact, after this trip, Milo could clearly sense that Rebecca was under pressure, whether it was based on her previous understanding of the town of Icam or the responsibilities she carried. In short, she was obviously not as straightforward as Milo had originally thought.

From Milo's perspective, when traveling in groups, it's easy to get caught up in that atmosphere and rhythm.

But in fact, it is absolutely necessary to be vigilant.

A very simple logic—

Ninety-nine percent of Milo's combat skills and awareness come from Karl, and Karl died in Ickham. So what gives Milo the right to let his guard down in Ickham?
Along the way, he had to guard against not only the flies buzzing around in the air, but also Solomon's mining company and the shadows lurking in the desolate mountains...

……

The town of Ikham looked very similar to what Milo had envisioned.

This is a town that has been abandoned by the indigenous people for nearly ten years. The roofs of large, densely packed low-rise buildings have collapsed and sunken, including the top of the tallest clock tower in the town, which is missing a large section, exposing a large black hole, and the clock inside is nowhere to be found.

Looking across the entire town, only the smoke rising from one or two chimneys can prove that there are still living people here.

Everywhere was desolate and bleak.

Although it was still daytime, being in Iqlam always brought a strange and profound sense of oppression that made people forget that there was a clear blue sky above them.

Milo and his group arrived in the town of Ikham at 2:34 p.m.
"At this time of year, most of the workers in the town are still working at the mine, so it's normal not to see anyone."

Walker glanced at the time on his watch and explained to Milo and the other man:

"It'll probably be around 6 or 7 p.m., after the sun goes down, that the town will start to get a little lively. By the way, the hostel you're staying at is on the east side of the town. See that broken clock tower? The hostel is right next to the clock tower. Since most of the miners live on the west side of the town, the area around the hostel should be relatively quiet."

"Where is the mining company's office?" Milo wasn't very concerned about the surrounding environment of his residence; in this run-down town, it didn't matter where he lived.

“In the south of the town, all the mining areas are located in the mountains south of the town. So the mining company reinforced and renovated some of the existing buildings on the south side of the town to use as offices for the company’s leadership, probably to facilitate command of the mines,” Walker explained earnestly.

“Where is the law enforcement office where you are on duty?” Rebecca asked.

"Right in the very center of town, my usual residence is next to the office." Walker pointed to a brand-new, wide road in the middle of town and said, "This is the main road built by the mining company for transporting ore. It runs through the entire town of Icam from north to south. Just follow the road and you will see the law enforcement office."

However, Walker's carriage did not continue on the main road, but turned into the alleyway on the east side after entering the town of Ickham.

"You're in charge of the entire Ikham all by yourself?" Milo asked, somewhat puzzled.

“Mainly because there are fewer people here.” Walker nodded.

"Pretty brave," Milo muttered, not pressing the matter further.

In Nanwei City, two guards are assigned to each street, while in Galid City, only one law enforcement officer is assigned to oversee an entire town…

Milo seemed to understand why Walker had been ripping off the organization's bacon.

……

……

"We're here, this is it."

The carriage stopped in front of a dilapidated two-story building.

This is an older type of residential building than the back-to-back buildings where working-class people live. The two floors of the entire row of buildings have been opened up, with sloping roofs, black chimneys, and a drainage ditch covered with moss at the entrance.

As soon as Milo stepped off the carriage, he smelled a foul stench, the smell of kitchen wastewater that had accumulated over a long period of time, carrying the greasy smell of oil and the rancid smell of rotting food.

But at least it proves that people live here regularly, because someone cooks. It's just that they dump the leftovers randomly.

Walker took two keys out of his backpack and handed them to Milo.

"These are the keys to your respective rooms."

He stepped forward and peered through the glass window into the dark room:
"It seems the innkeeper isn't here, but I've already told him that we'll prepare three meals a day and deliver them to your door. Of course, if you don't like the food, you can come to the office to find me; I'll make sure you have plenty of food."

Milo tossed one of the keys to Rebecca, muttering, "Can anything taste worse than a fly?"

“Fruit flies,” Rebecca corrected Milo’s mistake.

It seems she has also noticed this specialty of Galid City.

"They're all disgusting anyway," Milo shook his head.

……

Led by Walker, they put their luggage into the room.

Walker then took his leave and went to the law enforcement office.

Milo glanced around the room.

Located in the deep southern mountains, and with the wooden floors and walls of the rooms, Iqal has a familiar musty smell. If you walk back and forth on the floor, you can clearly hear the creaking sound.

Milo plopped down on the bed, which creaked as it did so.

He twisted his neck.

Even the slightest physical movement caused the bed to continue creaking and groaning. Before it had even shaken twice, sounds of pounding on the wall and Rebecca's voice came from the next room:

"Boom!"

"What are you twisting for!"

Milo chuckled softly, walked out of the room, went around the corridor, and entered Rebecca's room.

"Your window gets better sunlight than mine; you can even get some sun."

He pushed open the window and sat down on the windowsill.

Rebecca had already removed her mask and was standing in front of the simple dressing table, adjusting her tie. She didn't turn around, but looked at Milo in the mirror.

"Didn't anyone teach you not to go into a woman's room without permission?"

As he spoke, Milo had already pulled an apple from his pocket and started taking a bite. Chewing on the crisp flesh, he looked out the window at the scattered houses and mumbled, "Want some?"

As he spoke, he took out another apple and rubbed it on his trench coat.

He took all of these from the canteen at the Galid Law Enforcement Office.

After receiving a clear "no" response from Rebecca, he stuffed the apple back into his pocket and muttered to himself, "I'll keep it for a midnight snack."

Rebecca had already straightened her tie.

She took off her trench coat and hung it on the wall hanger, revealing some exquisite equipment on her fitted vest, including the pair of strange brass knuckles and a folded black weapon that Milo had never seen her use before. It appeared to have a sharp blade structure with thin, retractable steel wires at both ends, hanging behind Rebecca's slender waist.

With flintlock muskets and assembled short blades hanging on her waist, her look is quite cool.

Of course, weapons weren't important; Milo was more interested in Rebecca's stunning figure accentuated by her tight-fitting uniform. However, after Rebecca turned around, Milo obediently withdrew his gaze.

"We were already being intercepted by assassins halfway there, but once we arrived in Galid, everything was calm. Don't you find that strange?"

Rebecca asked Milo.

“Perhaps our current investigation progress isn’t enough to make the Solomon Gang anxious.” Milo chewed on an apple, using the sunlight streaming in from outside to examine the thin scar on Rebecca’s face that extended to her neck.

"Is it pretty?" Rebecca immediately noticed Milo's wandering gaze.

"It's alright." Milo nodded.

"How about I cut one for you too?"

“No need for that. I still need this face to seduce noblewomen.” Milo laughed, tossing the cleanly bitten apple core outside, then steered the conversation back to the case:

"Following our previous approach, we started our investigation by examining the Delaman family incident. But right now, the only person who might know the truth is that old madman, Mogot. We should only believe half of what he says. Nero said that the intelligence he received was that the Solomon gang had dug up some strange things in Icom. They studied these things, so I think that what they dug up is most likely the thing that led the Delaman family to commit those cannibalistic atrocities."

“But Mogot was talking about the Delaman family eating people; he didn’t mention those…fungi that grow on people.” Rebecca gets goosebumps every time she thinks about it.

“So you can only believe half of what Mogot says.” Milo shrugged. “Besides, he’s never actually seen the Delaman family eat people. From his perspective, he only found the skeletons of the missing, like that head that had been skinned and stripped of its flesh. Who can be sure that the head wasn’t covered in fungi before? So I think our line of thinking is probably correct.”

That's all Milo could say.

He couldn't tell Rebecca everything he saw from Carl's perspective as an undead.

Eating human flesh or eating fungi that grow on human bodies is not really that different, because when mature fungi are "picked" from a human body, large pieces of flesh and blood will inevitably come with them.

"Don't you think this whole thing sounds terrifying?"

Rebecca kept observing Milo's facial expressions.

When he mentioned things like fungi growing on the human body and cannibalism, there was no disgust or aversion on his face; it was as if he were describing something perfectly normal.

This is something Rebecca cannot understand.

In her understanding, how could so many densely packed fungi grow on a person's body?

But Milo's calm demeanor in the face of all these bizarre circumstances was somewhat eerie.

……

"Uh...it's not scary at all, we've already arrived in Ikm."

Milo blinked.

It was only then that he realized what was happening.

Rebecca's perspective is actually that of a normal person in this world. Due to her limited understanding, she inevitably experiences a lot of confusion when faced with such a bizarre and abnormal case, because many of the clues she currently has overturned her previous beliefs.

As for Milo, he seemed to have gradually become familiar with this strange atmosphere, and he no longer found it so strange.

Because he himself harbors many more unbelievable secrets.

He had seen the eerie image of a dead girl carving totems on the wall; he had entered the perspective of the deceased before her death.

If I told Rebecca all this, she'd probably think Milo's gone mad.
