Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 8 Notification
Chapter 8 Notification
"This is again..."
The whole family was surprised that the law enforcement officer would suddenly show up at this time.
Emma and Kang exchanged a glance, both looking bewildered.
Only little Finn remained oblivious to everything around him, sitting in his original spot and busy cooking.
"Is the matter really so serious that we need to bring the family members in for questioning? That shouldn't be the case." Kang hesitated for a moment, then quickly shook his head.
"No, no, it's not that serious. I, Lao Kang, am an upright man and have never done anything wrong. I'm not afraid of being arrested and investigated. Even if they search my house from top to bottom, they won't find any contraband. What am I afraid of?"
He then went over and opened the door.
Emma, on the other hand, silently got up and went upstairs after hearing the word "contraband" in Kang's words.
This immediately shattered half of Kang's hard-earned confidence.
But he had no choice but to bite the bullet and open the door, thinking that since he had already decided to hand over all his savings, he might as well just give up.
……
The door creaked open, revealing two masked law enforcement officers standing outside.
Kang forced out a very distorted smile:
"Officer, what can I do for you?"
He was prepared to be taken away with his shoulders twisted behind his back, but the law enforcement officer outside did not do so. Instead, he asked, "Milo Valrocan lives here, right?"
"Uh..." Kang was hesitating whether to struggle a little.
Then, Little Finn, who was in the kitchen, shouted while holding a spoon, "Oh right, he's my second brother!"
Kang Gang clicked his tongue.
The officer then placed two items in his arms: a short baton used by the city guards on duty and Milo's guard credentials.
"He hasn't gone home yet? Then please pass these two items on to him; he left them at the law enforcement office and forgot to take them."
"Eh?"
Kang was a little stunned.
"Uh... wasn't he dismissed?"
"Dismissed? Dismissed from what position? He has already been acquitted. The inspector himself gave the order. The case has nothing to do with him anymore."
The two law enforcement officers were too lazy to waste words with Condo.
They had been dragged around all night, driving their hunting dogs around the outskirts of the city for hours without a wink of sleep. They were exhausted and had no time to waste; they just wanted to get back to their shift as soon as possible.
He left without looking back after saying that.
……
"this."
Kang closed the door and took the guard's baton and identification back into the house.
He was a little confused.
Yesterday, Kang received information at the law enforcement office that Milo was suspected of murder, and that it was a serial murder case. He even struggled with the decision all night and finally decided to empty his pockets to get Milo out of the house. But before he could even leave the house, the matter was over.
Why haven't they come back yet?
At this moment, Emma, who had just sneaked upstairs, calmly walked down the stairs, went to the kitchen to get a bowl of oatmeal porridge, returned to her seat, and casually crossed her legs, as if nothing had happened.
She turned to look at her father:
"Is he alright?"
"I don't know, but that's what the officer just said. I really don't understand. Isn't this going in and out just a hassle?" Kang touched the bald spot on his receding hairline and sighed helplessly.
"Hey."
The carefree Finn continued eating.
Emma sipped her porridge while flipping through a thick book on the table.
She glanced at the baton and identification Milo used on duty, then her gaze finally settled on her father's chest containing 5 runes, and she casually opened the lid.
A foul smell of banknotes wafted from the box. Banknotes of various sizes and denominations were neatly stacked inside. On top of the banknotes was a gold pocket watch. The watch was exquisitely crafted, but its style was no longer popular in recent years; it was clearly an old item.
Emma extended two slender fingers and lifted the cover of the pocket watch.
Inside the pop-open watch cover is a photograph of a young woman.
She stared at the woman's photo on the watch cover for a long time, then slowly looked up at Kang:
"This woman... doesn't seem to be Mom, does she?"
……
"Ah, cough cough cough!! This..."
Kang immediately started coughing violently, muttering things like, "What's wrong with this awful weather?", "Why do I feel dizzy and my throat feels uncomfortable?", and "I guess I really can't stay up late when I get older."
The siblings in the kitchen stopped eating and just stared at their father, spoons in hand, with the same look they had for a law enforcement officer interrogating a criminal in a dark room.
Even Old Kang's weathered face, bearing the marks of decades, couldn't withstand the scrutiny of those two judges.
Just as he was changing the subject, the door creaked open, breaking the awkward silence.
The person who came in was Milo.
After parting ways with De La Shaw of the church, Milo ran to the street and bought a breadstick, which he ate all the way back.
Yesterday, he ate nothing all day except for a few bites of the sourdough bread Yan brought him in the morning. During the interrogation and investigation of the murderer, he had no time to eat and felt no hunger. It wasn't until he drank the cup of tea from Inspector Nero and left the law enforcement office that he began to feel an emptiness in his stomach and his legs trembled.
After showing off the bread as she walked into the kitchen, she picked up the last of the oatmeal porridge in the pot and gulped it down.
After skillfully licking the bottom of the pot clean, he turned his attention to his family.
"Get up so early?"
……
Milo's appearance saved Kang's life, and Kang seized the opportunity to immediately launch an attack on Milo.
"What the hell are you up to all day long? The law enforcement said you're involved in a serial murder case. Can you shut up and stop causing me trouble? Also, stop hanging out with that gray-haired guy all the time. If you're really bored, come help me at the workshop after work. You've been more of a hindrance than a help these past few years. I always have to clean up your messes."
Milo, of course, had no idea that Old Kang had revealed all his possessions the night he was away.
Seeing his family staring intently at him, waiting for his explanation, he didn't know where to begin.
"It's a bit complicated. I'd better change my clothes first, I have to go on duty in a bit."
After saying that, he dashed into his room.
At this moment, Little Finn jumped off the chair and walked to the stove, a soup spoon in his mouth, looking pitifully at the bottom of the pot that Milo had drunk clean.
Emma rolled her eyes, got up, carried little Finn back to the table, and poured her own bowl of oatmeal into his. "Thanks, big sister~"
Little Finn grinned and continued eating.
……
A short while later, Milo came out of the room in a clean uniform, taking his short stick and identification from the dining table.
Suddenly remembering something, he went back to the room, took out the half-eaten breadstick, tore it into small pieces, and threw it into Finn's bowl.
Noticing that the woman who was nominally his older sister was staring at him, he tore off a small piece of bread and handed it to her: "Here, open your mouth."
Emma's expression remained unchanged throughout; she simply stared coldly at Milo.
Milo was already used to this icy beauty's attitude, but he still enjoyed teasing her every now and then.
Before he could even pull his hand back, little Finn had already opened his mouth and snatched the piece of bread from Milo's hand.
Kang, on the other side, probably hadn't had enough of cursing yet:
“If you ever actually kill someone out there, remember not to come home, and don’t say you have any connection with us. Do you know how much bail those bloodsuckers at the law enforcement office ask for? 5 runes! I work myself to the bone for a month and I only earn about the same amount of runes. I can’t afford to let you cause trouble a few times.”
Emma slowly shifted her gaze to her book and coldly added:
"With his physique, who could he possibly kill?"
Milo reached out and rubbed Finn's head: "Hey, everyone says the case is closed, it was all a misunderstanding. Why would I kill someone for no reason? Well, if there's nothing else, I'll go on duty now and come back for dinner tonight."
Just as I was about to turn and leave, I suddenly noticed a gleaming golden object on a strange little wooden box on the table.
Take a closer look.
"Wow, what a beautiful woman! Who is she?"
He picked up the pocket watch and examined carefully the slightly yellowed black-and-white photograph inside the watch cover.
The woman in the photo has simple makeup and attire, but it cannot hide her beauty at all. Her long, wavy hair covers half of her shoulders, making her look dignified, elegant, and intellectual.
This item, which looks so old, could only belong to Old Kang. Milo looked at the woman in the photo with her strangely colored curly hair, then at the sparse tufts of hair on Old Kang's head, and finally shifted his gaze to Emma, who had typical long, straight black hair, with a playful smile slowly spreading across his face.
"Let me see, let me see." Little Finn stood up from his chair, glanced at the pocket watch in Milo's hand, and then sat down again with little interest to continue eating.
A kid his age doesn't have a basic sense of aesthetics, so naturally he wouldn't know that the pocket watch "locks" a stunningly beautiful woman, let alone understand what his parents are implying through their winks and gesturings.
Emma simply closed the book and waited quietly for her father to explain.
Milo's face lit up with joy. He loved watching these kinds of family dramas, especially those ancient gossips that had nothing to do with him—they were the sweetest to watch.
A few drops of sweat had already seeped from Old Kang's bald forehead.
His two biggest challenges in life were the dwindling amount of hair he had left and his difficult relationship with his daughter, Emma.
It is often said that a daughter is her father's lover from a past life, but Kang, the super dad, is not super at all. Emma and Finn lacked the presence of their mother during their upbringing. As a rough and unrefined man, Kang could never fill the void of maternal love that his two children lacked.
Emma has always been a withdrawn and eccentric girl. Coupled with her strange illness, Old Kang has become increasingly cautious in his daily interactions with her, sometimes even making it seem as if Emma is the head of the family.
Take the current situation, for example.
As for the woman in the pocket watch...
That man didn't have many romantic acquaintances when he was young, so secretly keeping a memory of them isn't a big problem. The problem is that his children discovered this memory.
……
"Bang bang bang."
Another series of knocks on the door saved Lao Kang's life.
He felt as if he had been granted a pardon and immediately ran to open the door.
Strangely, the people knocking on the door this time were the same two law enforcement officers who had visited before.
For some reason, they turned back from a long journey.
The officer spotted Milo inside the room immediately and tossed him a rolled-up document:
"Preparing for next month's law enforcement officer assessment, that's what the Inspector wants."
After saying that, Kang's two saviors left without looking back.
……
Kang slowly closed the door. He was currently trying his best to digest the news brought by the law enforcement officer, muttering to himself, "These two always bring good news every time they come?"
Logically speaking, having law enforcement officers knock on your door is never a good thing. In a country with a strict law enforcement system, a law enforcement officer knocking on the door is tantamount to "NYPD, open the door." However, the two law enforcement officers who visited today brought good news on two separate occasions, which is quite rare.
Milo then unfolded the scroll of documents.
The document was a handwritten notice bearing the emblem of the law enforcement agency. It was very concise and essentially informed him that he was participating in the next round of law enforcement officer assessments.
What does it mean?
Inspector Nero?
Milo recalled that Nero had asked him about his current position before he left.
Does he want me to join the law enforcement team?
……
"Hey kid, what were you doing yesterday? They gave you a spot to take the exam?"
Realizing what was happening, Kang snatched the document from Milo's hand and repeatedly checked the information on it.
"What a fucking lucky break! A blessing in disguise? Hey, do you know how much a law enforcement officer earns a month? It's at least three or four times what I, an old worker, make. You're going to be rich, kid."
Milo was hit repeatedly with a series of big slaps by Old Kang, leaving his chest feeling stuffy.
To be honest, he was also a bit confused about the current situation. After all, just a few hours ago he was a key suspect in the law enforcement agency, with an execution lock hanging on his wrist that could cut his blood vessels at any time. The change in his identity was 180 degrees, which was too strange.
The assessment of law enforcement agencies is not something that can be taken casually.
First, you must be a graduate of one of the Royal Colleges, and your major must be law-related. You must also pass through layers of screening to confirm your background and clean record before you are eligible to participate in the assessment.
Such a comprehensive screening system can shut out Milo just from the very first hurdle.
Now, however, a mere notice has confirmed the matter, which feels somewhat unreal.
……
Kang was overjoyed.
He couldn't wait to pack his things and head to the alchemy workshop to show off the news to all his fellow workers.
The siblings in the kitchen remained calm.
Little Finn had no idea what a law enforcement officer was.
Emma stared at Milo's face with a suspicious look for a long time, and finally managed to utter a sentence:
"You weren't slept with by that inspector last night, were you?"
