Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 7 Family
Chapter 7 Family
And so, Milo returned to the familiar little dark room once again.
This time, however, the person sitting in front of him was not Rebecca, but the law enforcement inspector, Nero.
Unlike before, this time Milo's hands were not locked, and there was a cup of steaming hot tea on the table.
At Nero's request, he recounted the events as they had been described.
Of course, the story told by Milo was definitely edited out appropriately, and he selectively omitted some things that should not have been said.
Nero sat opposite Milo without saying a word, listening to the entire conversation with a blank expression, his demeanor remaining completely unmoved from beginning to end.
That's roughly what happened.
Milo took a sip of tea and calmly asked:
"When can I go back? I haven't been sleeping well lately, I need to go back and catch up on my sleep."
After a whole day of aimless running around, sitting in this dimly lit little dark room, Milo felt incredibly tired and could fall asleep at any moment.
Nero frowned and pondered for a while before speaking:
"Which district's city guard are you?"
“Shell Street, 23rd Parish,” Milo replied without hesitation.
“You did a good job. Now you can go home and sleep, Milovalrokan.”
……
...
Nero's attitude puzzled Milo, because Rebecca's condition was somewhat worrying. She had become a little confused when the three of them were about to arrive at the law enforcement office. Milo had thought that he could only leave after Rebecca had fully recovered and proved his innocence.
But Nero released him without hesitation.
Namilo was too lazy to stay in this godforsaken place any longer, so he picked up the half-finished cup of tea and headed outside.
As he passed through the law enforcement office lobby, all the officers present stared at him with strange looks.
Milo was unaware that during the hours he and Rebecca were missing, he had been identified as a prime suspect.
So when he walked out of the law enforcement office, sipping hot tea with an air of nonchalance, it naturally attracted everyone's attention.
……
It was 06:25 a.m. when I left the law enforcement office.
Milo was soaked in dew, and his boots were covered in mud. He couldn't sleep right now, and in half an hour it would be time for him to go on duty.
I can only go home and change into clean clothes before coming out again.
However, just a few steps after he stepped out of the law enforcement office, a strange voice came from behind him: "Want to chat sometime, Mr. Guard?"
Milo turned around and saw a church official riding a white horse and wearing a gray cloak.
It was Dillah, whom I had met at the crime scene before.
"Not really."
Milo answered very decisively.
On the one hand, he didn't like these eccentric church members; on the other hand, many signs in the case indicated that the church was behind it, and Milo didn't want to get entangled with such a mysterious organization.
"Can't we even just get to know each other?"
Dillashau had no intention of letting Milo off so easily; he rode off on horseback to keep up with Milo's pace.
“I know you don’t trust me, but I’ve been in charge of following up on this series of murders on behalf of the church. The criminal investigation skills and abilities of these law enforcement officers are obvious to all, and we can’t rely on them to solve the cases. I believe that you and I should have a certain degree of consensus on this point, right?”
Dillasho slowed his horse's pace and rode alongside Milo.
“Aren’t you all sleepy?” Milo glanced at Dirac.
“To be honest, I know what you and that red-haired law enforcement officer were whispering about at the crime scene, but what I didn’t expect was that out of so many professionals there, only the two of you were able to grasp the most crucial clue, and it was even a city guard who caught it. I really can’t understand it,” Dillah said.
Milo shook his head: "It'll be dawn soon. Does your church also have a tradition of night shifts?"
“But no matter what, you found the child, and in a way you helped me solve a problem. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to explain it to you when I got back. I’m a pretty polite person, so if you need any help in the future, just come to the church to find me,” Dillah continued.
……
The two talked to each other the whole way, and not a single word they said matched.
Continue until you reach the fork in the road at the end of the street and separate.
……
...
Meanwhile, in another corner of the city.
The residential area of the 23rd parish.
The buildings here are all two-story houses back to back, and the murky brown building materials indicate that they are cheap apartments, completely incomparable to the elaborate and exquisite buildings inhabited by middle and upper-class residents.
The residents here are mostly workers from various factories and workshops in Nanwei City. This is partly due to the cheap rent, and partly because the industrial area of Nanwei City is located not far behind this residential area.
Although it was still dark, many households had already begun to get busy.
Of course, one of them stayed up all night.
That's the Valrocan family.
This family of four moved in at the end of the plague.
The eldest person in the family is Kang.
This refers to the middle-aged man who had previously taken Yan to the law enforcement office in an attempt to bail Milo out.
Then there was his eldest daughter, Emma. The youngest was a 7-year-old boy named Finn.
Right now, the whole family is gathered in the kitchen, around the dining table.
However, they weren't having breakfast; they were discussing a very serious issue.
That's about Emma's brother, Finn's brother, Milo.
……
“I’ll say it again, once this money is handed over, there will be no more money in the family to allow you to take the medicine prescribed by the pharmacy regularly.”
Kang looked solemnly at his daughter's slightly pale face, one hand supporting a small wooden box on the table, which contained all the family's savings.
After being kicked out of the law enforcement office, Kang couldn't sleep all night.
He emptied out all his money, including the change in his socks, and managed to scrape together 5 runes, not a penny more or less.
While cursing the vampires in the law enforcement office, he realized that he couldn't make a decision so hastily.
He doesn't care if he goes hungry; the most important thing is his daughter's illness and his youngest son's tuition fees.
Besides, the most important reason for his hesitation was Milo's identity.
Milo is not his son. Although Emma and Finn have always called Milo their brother, Milo is not actually related to their family by blood.
Milo wasn't even Kang's adopted son.
……
"I thought you were trying to say something by putting on this act."
Emma leaned back in her chair, her tone very flat.
Her skin was fair, even pale, and her figure was extremely thin. Her long, straight black hair fell over her sculpted collarbones and shoulders, making her look like a vampire beauty in a religious oil painting, with a sickly and aloof aura.
There is absolutely no trace of Lao Kang in Emma.
Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise, but apart from those deep blue eyes, she did not inherit any of Lao Kang's other genes.
Emma crossed her arms and looked coldly at her father:
"Have you forgotten who helped you drag this family all the way to Nanwei City when we escaped from the old town? Without Milo, the three of us would have died of illness or starvation on the outskirts of the city long ago."
Her tone was harsh, completely unlike the attitude a daughter should have when speaking to her father.
What's even stranger is that Kang didn't have the slightest objection to his daughter's attitude; in fact, he seemed a bit intimidated, with an unnatural expression on his face, probably knowing he was in the wrong.
The two adults left in the house stared at each other at the dining table.
Finn Jr. was sitting in the middle.
He held a bowl in his hands and ate the oatmeal porridge inside.
Because he was so small, he could only stick half his head out at the dining table, his two little eyes glancing between his sister and his father.
“Of course I know what you mean, but the problem is, he's involved in a murder case, a serial murder case.” Kang's face was full of worry.
“You’re right. It was indeed with his help that we were able to arrive in Nanwei City on the last day. Otherwise, we definitely wouldn’t have made it here before the city was sealed off. He asked to sneak into the city as the second son of his family, and I agreed to it. I even helped him find a job in the alchemy workshop and taught him a lot. I can say with my hand on my heart that I have never treated him unfairly… If it weren’t for your strange illness, to be honest, I would have gritted my teeth and paid this money to bail him out. But in the end, who doesn’t have selfish motives? You are my own daughter.”
Emma's eyes flickered slightly, but her words remained direct:
"So it's my fault? I think you're just unwilling to part with your own money."
"..."
Kang knew his daughter's temperament all too well, and had long since grown accustomed to her sharp tongue.
"I'm also puzzled. I've never seen you two get along so well before. Weren't you just hoping I'd kick that guy out of the house as soon as possible...?"
“That’s because he smokes,” Emma replied seriously.
"Okay, I understand what you mean."
Kang nodded.
At this moment, Finn, who had been sitting to the side with his head tilted back, spoke up:
Aren't you going to ask me what I think?
"Eat your food!" the father and daughter said in unison.
Little Finn could only wisely lower his head and eat.
……
"Then I won't worry about that anymore. As for your medicine... don't worry too much. I know the pharmacy clerk well, there won't be any problems."
Kang stood up and picked up the small wooden box:
"It's all that brat's fault. He's caused me so much trouble these past few years. He even ruined my job at the workshop. It's really..."
Emma frowned and interrupted her father's grumbling: "You know better than I do what happened. It's not his fault."
Perhaps because something unpleasant was mentioned, the family meeting ended prematurely, leaving only the sound of little Finn eating in the house...
……
Kang put on his coat, preparing to take all his belongings to the law enforcement office one more time.
In truth, he knew that no matter how reckless Milo was, he couldn't possibly be involved in any murder case. In his view, bail was nothing more than a way for those bastards in the law enforcement agency to make money. Paying the money was just a way to buy peace of mind.
But just then, there was a rapid knocking on the door.
"Bang bang bang."
"Who is it?" Kang turned around and shouted.
The response from outside was:
"Open the door, officer."
