Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 31 Confusion of black and white
Chapter 31 Confusion of black and white
Rebecca only made eye contact with Emma once before calmly looking away.
She took out a handkerchief to wipe the bloodstains from her hands, then took off her hat and tossed it onto the desk, casually commenting, "Quite affectionate, huh? But the new law says that siblings aren't allowed to... you know... things? What, didn't you memorize that rule when you were studying for your exam?"
Rebecca leaned against the desk, a faint smile playing on her lips as she looked at Milo with a hint of mockery and provocation.
Milo wasn't stupid. Although he'd only known Rebecca for less than half a month, he was pretty sure he understood about 70-80% of her personality. She was the type who would retaliate tenfold if anyone stepped on her foot. So it was clear that two-tenths of Rebecca's remark was teasing Milo, while the remaining eight-tenths was provocation directed at Emma.
Seeing the atmosphere in the office plummet to zero due to some unusual clash between the two women, Milo forcefully interrupted and changed the subject:
"How's that blond kid from the Sherman family doing?"
"His life was saved, but his manhood is probably gone."
Rebecca took off her black trench coat and hung it aside. Underneath, she was still wearing a white shirt and a black vest. The first button on the tight, masculine collar was undone, and then the sleeves were rolled up to the metal cuffs at the elbows.
The tight-fitting top makes her legs look incredibly long, giving her a super cool and stylish look.
The only thing Rebecca didn't remove was the mask covering her mouth and nose, but Milo knew the reason perfectly well and wouldn't be so tactless as to bring it up.
"That's easy. When he wants to carry on the family line, I'll just have a few babies for him. It's not hard to solve." To ease the strange atmosphere in the office, Milo could only make a self-sacrificing suggestion with a joke that was as utterly cliché as it could get.
Sure enough, as soon as he said it, Milo felt himself being stared at by three pairs of eyes that looked like he was an idiot.
Only little Finn sat beside him, grinning foolishly.
"Alright, let's get down to business. My original idea was to gather all the evidence before the Sherman family used their connections to bring this to justice. That way, at least we would be on the side of justice, and we would also have something to report to our superiors. But I've already sent back the group of people who were able to testify earlier. I can't force them to do this."
Rebecca wiped the sweat from her forehead and said to Milo:
"So I can only try to get these people who have been captured to confess, but the problem now is that the six people who were with Cillian at the beginning refuse to confess, the ones who were planning to... your sister."
"Isn't the law enforcement agency allowed to use vigilante justice?" Milo muttered to himself.
In his mind, there was a method called forced confession.
In fact, dealing with these bastards doesn't really require torture to extract confessions; you just need to pry their mouths open.
"What do you think I was doing just now?"
Rebecca spread her hands irritably, revealing the dried bloodstains that couldn't be wiped off.
Milo's lips twitched.
In his memory, the original six unlucky guys, except for the one who ran away, had already been beaten half to death on the hillside. Now, after being tortured by Rebecca, they probably only had a quarter of their lives left. But even so, they refused to confess. It seemed that the pressure the Sherman family was putting on them was far greater than that from the law enforcement agency.
"What will the Sherman family do?" Milo frowned slightly.
Rebecca shook her head: "Their family has some connections in the House of Commons. I don't know exactly what those connections are, but if I'm not mistaken, the next ones to come knocking will be the Oversight Committee..."
Before she could finish speaking, a subordinate's report came from outside the office door:
"Boss, the inspection team has arrived."
"So fast?" Rebecca raised an eyebrow.
They had only been back at the law enforcement office for less than half an hour, and Cillian probably hadn't even woken up in the hospital yet, when the oversight committee came knocking. It seems the Sherman family's connections and methods are powerful and swift.
……
The lobby of the law enforcement office.
A group of seven people swaggered into the center of the hall.
All seven were dressed in formal attire and wore badges with the logo of an oversight agency on their chests, the badges featuring a falcon totem.
Compared to the many law enforcement officers present who were dressed in black trench coats, the members of the inspection team in front of them were dressed in much neater and more sophisticated clothes and had a more sophisticated demeanor. Even in Nanwei City, a city with a perennial rainy climate, their leather shoes were spotless.
The head of the inspection team was a gaunt-faced man, about thirty years old, with gold-rimmed glasses perched on his hooked nose. He leaned on a cane in his left hand, and his face was gloomy. He was clearly there to interrogate someone.
After Rebecca and Milo appeared, the man immediately produced a document bearing the committee's red seal.
"Harrison, head of the second group of the Oversight Committee, we have received a report from the public that the Chengnan Enforcement Office has engaged in irregular enforcement practices. This is an enforcement order. Please cooperate with our investigation, Chief Enforcement Officer."
The man's voice was very hoarse, clearly that of a heavy smoker for decades, as if there was always a thick phlegm stuck in his throat.
He paused halfway through his sentence, then slowly turned his head to glance at the group of Sherman family members squatting on the ground with their heads in their hands in the courtyard outside the gate, and added, "The law enforcement office is quite lively today."
……
Rebecca had already appeared inside the hall with Milo and the others.
She glanced at the execution order in Harrison's hand, then turned to Milo and said, "This guy's also named Sherman, birds of a feather." "Watch your words, Chief of Staff. I'm here to investigate you. Your actions tonight involve suspected use of excessive force, forced confessions, and improper use of firearms. I have a whistleblower to testify. If you don't cooperate with the investigation, I will report this to the organization, and you may face suspension."
Harrison's eyes were like those of a viper, fixed on Rebecca, his tone aggressive.
"You still have a whistleblower?" Rebecca scoffed.
In her view, this was nothing more than a reason made up by the Sherman family, and Harrison was abusing his power to vent his anger for his own kinsmen.
But before Rebecca could utter the words "Where is your witness?", Harrison slowly raised his cane and shook it.
His subordinate turned and walked out of the law enforcement hall, then led two male civilians in.
After seeing the two men's faces clearly, Rebecca's expression instantly darkened.
Because she remembered very clearly that she had seen these two people on a hillside in a cemetery on the outskirts of the city.
These two were among the many people who pleaded with Rebecca not to take them back to the law enforcement office.
Rebecca felt her blood pressure spike instantly.
She felt that she couldn't force those innocent people from the lower classes to testify about this matter, and she understood their fear of the aristocracy, so she dismissed the crowd.
Who knew that not only would they not participate in testifying against Cillian's crimes, but they would also turn around and become whistleblowers for the violent law enforcement agency?
……
When Milo saw the faces of the two people, he sighed inwardly.
Unlike Rebecca, Milo wasn't angry, nor was she surprised; she was just somewhat helpless.
Perhaps this was not their original intention.
Before they even stepped into the hall, they must have already been subjected to coercion and enticement by Harrison. As people from the lower class, they had no choice at all; if they didn't cooperate, they would face the Sherman family's retaliation just the same.
"Chief Enforcement Officer, the two brave whistleblowers have given me a complete account of your and your colleagues' actions in the suburbs. This is now a formal complaint, so please do not underestimate this enforcement order. Next, my team and I will inspect all departments within the enforcement office. If any irregularities such as coercion or violence are found, according to regulations, the supervisory department has the right to take over the command of the enforcement office on the spot, and also take over the review and reporting of cases. When shall we begin?"
Harrison adjusted his glasses with his thumb, staring intently at Rebecca with an indifferent and mocking gaze.
He is very confident.
Because everything he is doing now is legal and compliant, and he is acting entirely within his authority and in accordance with procedures, it can be said to be flawless.
Next, all he has to do is take a stroll around the law enforcement office. Whether Rebecca's investigation methods are compliant or not is entirely up to him. As long as he insists that Rebecca has problems, then the case at the law enforcement office tonight will be fully handled by the supervisory group he represents, and even the other law enforcement officers will have to obey his orders.
This is the terrifying power that the state has granted to the supervisory commission.
……
Milo's heart sank.
Undeniably, the existence of such a power oversight body is scientific and reasonable, but the fact that someone like Harrison has infiltrated it is absolutely unacceptable.
However, the composition of power institutions is complex and involves far too many things to be explained in just a few words.
Tonight's situation is simply because the law enforcement system is unwilling to deal with those nobles.
Because even a slight touch can cause endless trouble.
……
After entering the hall, the two "whistleblowers" never dared to look up and meet Milo's gaze, constantly avoiding his eyes.
However, Milo didn't really pay attention to the two of them.
With the enforcement order in place, Rebecca has no choice but to comply. If she utters even a single "no," her powers as chief of staff will be temporarily revoked.
But any reasonable person knows that the so-called inspection is just a formality. Harrison came here to take over the case and then nail the Valrocan family, who should have been the victims, to the execution platform to avenge the Sherman family.
……
At this point, Milo finally understood the methods and capabilities of the so-called aristocratic class.
In a rigid hierarchical system, those at the top have countless ways to crush those below them, whether legal or illegal...
