Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 30: Declaring Sovereignty?
Chapter 30: Declaring Sovereignty?
……
And so, the law enforcement officers escorted the hundred or so members of the Sherman family, lined up in rows, and marched in a grand procession towards the city.
At Rebecca's request, Milo and she rode side by side on horseback at the front of the procession.
"Are you afraid I'll make you ride a horse again?" Rebecca glanced at Milo.
“Ah, I’m a little disappointed.” Milo shrugged.
"Ok?"
“I mean, your horse might be a little disappointed,” Milo said, making things up.
"Alright, let's get down to business." Rebecca shook her head and said seriously:
“I dismissed everyone except your family. I was just standing at the bottom of the hillside for a short while when more than ten people came up to me begging me to let them leave.”
"Because they don't want to be targeted by the Sherman family, right?"
Milo had anticipated this.
Rebecca had originally told him that she wanted to bring everyone back to the law enforcement office.
Even with the Sherman family's immense influence, the country is governed by law in this era. With so many people testifying, the Sherman family cannot overturn the law. The law enforcement agency can even obtain enough testimony to prosecute Cillian in court.
However, it is clear that Rebecca underestimated the pressure the Sherman family exerted on these lower-class people.
Ordinary people living at the bottom of society live with the mentality of "it's better to avoid trouble." They can't afford to offend anyone, let alone a behemoth like the Sherman family. Everyone wants to live a peaceful life, and law enforcement officers can't guard them every day. As long as the Sherman family is determined to take revenge, they will eventually suffer.
This is a very real problem.
Although Rebecca couldn't stand it, she could completely understand that she had no right to force these people to go against the aristocracy.
In fact, things like what happened today are probably happening every day in this country.
However, unlike Milo, who could empty the entire law enforcement office to save the day, other bullied lower-class people were likely to be wantonly ravaged and trampled upon by the nobles.
Imagine what Emma would be like without Milo and Rebecca's relationship...
Thinking of this, Milo unconsciously tightened his grip on the reins.
……
“Then you might as well let us go home too,” Milo sighed.
“No, it’s safest to come back to the law enforcement station with me.” Rebecca shook her head, her tone very firm: “You went too far. Their youngest son’s manhood was cut off by you, they will definitely retaliate. I’m not comfortable letting you go home like this.”
"You might not believe it, but it was my sister who stabbed me."
As Milo spoke, the image of Emma stabbing Cillian flashed through his mind, and a smile involuntarily appeared on his lips.
"Is that the really pretty girl from earlier?" Rebecca turned around and glanced at Emma's shadow in the back of the line.
“Yes.” Milo nodded.
“Okay,” Rebecca said, something Milo didn’t quite understand.
It's unclear whether this "okay" is a comment on appearance or on the fatal blow.
"Don't worry, you've helped me so much, leave this to me this time. I'll handle things properly," Rebecca replied calmly.
But Milo could still see the pressure in her tense brows.
Is it really that complicated?
“Nobles are the most difficult group to deal with in this country.” Rebecca snorted. “Even law enforcement officers cannot carry out any armed action against nobles without absolute permission. And the so-called permission depends on the rank of the target noble. Only higher-level institutions have the authority to conduct thorough investigations and enforcement against them.”
"To put it bluntly, it's still a case of the big fish eating the small fish," Milo shook his head.
In Milo's view, the current structure of the law enforcement system in this world is still very primitive and rudimentary. Without sufficient power to support it, law enforcement officers are somewhat powerless when facing the noble class that has been rooted for hundreds of years.
This is no one's fault; it's simply an inevitable transitional period during a changing era.
As long as these noble classes continue to have some influence over the country, things like today will keep repeating themselves.
Even those at the pinnacle of power cannot reverse this; it takes time to digest, and no one can control it.
……
"Then your actions tonight would be against the rules, wouldn't they?" Milo glanced at Rebecca.
“There’s no explicit rule against targeting nobles. As long as there’s absolute evidence that they’ve committed illegal acts, there will naturally be people backing us up. There are still many people who dislike the noble class.” Rebecca’s tone was full of hostility.
"I understand."
Milo was not feeling well.
The whole incident was not his or Emma's fault at all.
It was only because Emma happened to be seen by that bastard Cillian that this whole series of events happened; it was purely because that kid was driven by lust.
Just because Emma is beautiful, does that mean she has to be defiled by Cirion?
What kind of bullshit is this?
In the end, the one under the most pressure is actually the victim. What a load of bull.
Such injustices leave the vast majority of people at the bottom of society with no choice but to accept them passively, and they dare not utter a word.
Without power, one is at the mercy of others.
This is an eternal truth.
……
The law enforcement office is quite lively tonight.
The interrogation rooms were completely full, and many departments were simply used as detention cells. Those who couldn't find a place to be held were lined up in the law enforcement office courtyard and guarded by law enforcement officers. The Milo family was housed in Rebecca's office.
This is the South City Law Enforcement Office, which covers 45 parishes in the south. The highest-ranking officer on duty is Chief Enforcement Officer Rebecca. Law enforcement inspectors like Nero would not be stationed in a place like a law enforcement office.
Rebecca's office is kept simple, highlighting a minimalist, austere style.
However, there are still some small details that show that this office is used by a woman, such as a cute little bell that is upside down on the desk. Usually, these kinds of gadgets are hung around the necks of cats and dogs.
Rebecca was busy with interrogations at this time. Not only in the interrogation room, but in almost every department, the sounds of slamming tables and beatings could be heard from time to time. The whole corridor was like this.
In the office, Kang stood by the window, smoking silently.
Little Finn crawled around under the desk, holding a piece of grilled food in his hand, eating and playing at the same time.
On the other side, at Emma's command, Milo obediently sat on the sofa, his hand pulled by Emma and placed on her knee. Emma was carefully cleaning the wound on Milo's hand with cotton swabs and alcohol.
"Does it hurt?"
Emma didn't look up; her movements were very subtle.
Milo couldn't see her face, but he could probably picture her serious expression.
"It's a bit chilly," Milo muttered.
"Hmm?" Emma looked up in confusion.
To be honest, after knowing her for several years, Milo had never seen such a concerned look on this nominal older sister's face. For a moment, Milo suddenly felt that Emma's gentleness was incredibly irresistible.
She already exuded a cold, sickly fragility, and after this ordeal, red marks from crying still lingered at the corners of her eyes. The way she slightly furrowed her brows and raised her head... wow...
I meant your hands are cold.
Milo grinned.
Thinking to myself, "Oh no, your persona has collapsed! You've suddenly become so gentle, that's not right."
Although he was secretly plotting something, Milo remained outwardly calm. After Emma cleaned his wounds and applied medicine, she got up and sat to Milo's left to treat the injury on his other hand. Milo cooperated perfectly throughout.
Emma's movements were so gentle that Milo forgot that those slender, fair hands had just cut off someone's life not long ago.
“I know,” Emma replied softly.
Her hands were really cold. Perhaps due to her long-term illness, her constitution had been weakened over time, and cold hands and feet had become the norm.
Just then, little Finn, bouncing around, handed Milo a piece of baked bread.
Emma silently cleaned Milo's wounds, then asked after a while:
"Should I not have made that cut?"
Emma was the smartest person in the family, so she could see the officers' concerns and knew why her family had to stay in the law enforcement office.
That stab did vent her anger and humiliation, but after calming down, Emma began to realize that her rash actions would probably implicate her whole family.
"Why shouldn't it be? It absolutely should be."
Milo's tone was very confident.
"That cut was very well made, a permanent cure, eliminating any future troubles."
He could sense the self-reproach in Emma's tone.
But Milo never believed that Emma was at fault in any way, so her self-blame was completely unreasonable.
“You didn’t do anything wrong, we didn’t do anything wrong, we just lost, lost because of class and power, that’s all.” Milo rubbed Emma’s head.
Emma tilted her head away and pulled his hand back: "Don't move, the medicine hasn't been applied yet."
Milo could somewhat sense Emma's low spirits.
But he couldn't say anything more to comfort her, because that was the truth. According to Rebecca, the Sherman family wouldn't let it go. The situation was like the calm before the storm, and it was anyone's guess what methods the Sherman family would use to retaliate.
Seeing Emma's distraught state, Milo could only resort to his usual way of amusing her:
He held the piece of roasted bread that Finn had given him up in front of Emma: "Come on, open your mouth."
Sure enough, just like always, Emma reflexively put on a cold, irritated face.
Milo chuckled and slowly withdrew his hand.
He knew Emma never ate anything he offered her.
……
Just then, the office door was pushed open, and Rebecca returned carrying a bloodstained stick, casually placing it behind the door.
Milo glanced meaningfully at the hidden stick, thinking to himself how lucky he was not to have been too arrogant when she caught him for interrogation last time, otherwise he might have been beaten to a pulp...
He was just about to make a joke when he suddenly felt something warm and smooth gently brush against his fingertips...
When Milo turned around, he saw that Emma looked indifferent, chewing on some baked goods. She wasn't looking at Milo, but staring intently at Rebecca, who had just entered the room.
What is she doing?
?
……
In the office, the two women's eyes met, subtly revealing a tense, almost confrontational tone.
Milo raised an eyebrow.
What, is she asserting her sovereignty?
