Chapter 166 Cooperation?

Chapter 166 Cooperation?

“I did the math, and my annual salary can’t even support him for half a month.”

Milo counted on his fingers.

"I think I can recover for half a month," old Theon muttered.

"Were you two even listening?" Dillah asked, looking completely bewildered.

“I’m listening, I’m listening, go on.” Milo waved his hand and asked, “So, according to you, Ethan Field became like this after he came into contact with that fragment of the Finich manuscript, right? Then what about the Finich manuscript?”

"So, what you're most interested in is that manuscript." Dillashau astutely caught Milo's intention.

"Bullshit! Including that girl, there are eight other missing people. You said you were the first to arrive at the scene, where are they?" Old Theon didn't care about manuscripts; he just wanted to find the missing people.

“One at a time.” Dillash knew how difficult old Theon was, so he didn’t want to provoke him.

Then he began to explain in detail:

“First of all, the manuscript is gone, I’m sure of that. When I arrived at the scene, Ethan had burned the manuscript. But I didn’t see the other missing people you mentioned. But don’t rush to conclusions, let me explain my reasoning first. I’ve said before that ordinary humans who try to comprehend evil scriptures will bring misfortune upon themselves. Ethan clearly performed some kind of ritual according to the instructions on the manuscript fragments, which led to the disappearance of the others and also to his current state.”

"Burned?" Milo frowned.

“I have no reason to lie. You’ll understand in a moment.” Dillasho gestured for Milo to calm down and then said, “Remember the original text I mentioned before, the Necronomicon? It contains over 800 pages of ancient magic. My deduction is that the fragment Ethan Field obtained contained one of those magical rituals, and it was this ritual that caused the disappearance of eight living people.”

As Dillah spoke, Milo glanced, intentionally or unintentionally, at Maggie's shadow outside the door.

This time he didn't get a response from Maggie. Milo didn't know if Maggie didn't want to talk to him or if she simply didn't know the truth.

"If you don't know anything, why are you keeping this half-dead guy around?" Old Theon asked, puzzled.

“Research, huh?” Dillasho replied calmly, his tone perfectly matter-of-fact. “From the Church’s perspective, we don’t care what the so-called evil magical ritual is, nor do we need to know where the missing people went. What we want to find is the mastermind behind this whole thing, that Monsis scholar who betrayed the Church. He was the one who caused this tragedy, but we still don’t understand what his intentions were. If, and I mean if, we could get Ethan back to normal, maybe we could get some clues.”

"But it's clear that this guy is beyond saving. The organization has given the final order, and we won't waste any more resources on him. So if the enforcement team is interested, they can send someone to pick him up. Strictly speaking, he's still a living person, and living people are under your jurisdiction, right?"

"So you mean we have to clean up this mess?" Milo glanced at the other person coldly, took out the bronze ring that belonged to Ethan, and asked, "Why did you bury this in Maggie's grave?"

"It was just part of the funeral ceremony. When Ethan Field was still lucid, he kept holding the ring and calling out Maggie's name. We had reason to believe that the ring belonged to Maggie Green. According to the Golden Rule, burying someone in an empty grave is an act of deceiving the gods, so... we buried the ring." Dillashau explained calmly.

“I know that another kid from the Gus Society was shot dead earlier today, right? The killer was from Solomon, right? If I’m not mistaken, the person I’ve been tracking has started to take action, which means that your investigation has, to some extent, caught his attention. This is a good sign, which means that my speculation was correct. From the moment the Feynman manuscript was put up for auction, this has been a setup. Now we’ve started to touch on some key clues, so I’ve decided to give you a little help, which is also a way of helping myself.”

"This kid is using us as pawns." Old Theon's manner of speaking was as ruthless as ever.

“No, no, no, it’s about information sharing. It’s rare for us to be on the same side and have the same subjects of investigation. Why not cooperate?” Dillah said with a smile. “So, to show my sincerity, I’ve decided to provide you with another potentially important lead.”

"The conditions are?" Milo raised an eyebrow. "The conditions are that you have to help me get rid of this hot potato. This thing has already used up most of my available funds. To put it bluntly, I can't afford to support him anymore." Dillah Shaw pointed to Ethan on the bed and said quite frankly.

However, before Milo could give a reply...

Maggie, who had been standing outside the secret room door, suddenly darted in!

Then a bizarre scene unfolded: a dark shadow covered Ethan Field, grabbed his throat with both hands, and lifted his entire body into the air!
"What the hell!"

"Is this the crucial clue you were talking about?"

"I swear I have absolutely no idea what happened!"

"What are you standing there for? Someone come and pull it down!"

"No need, it's already dead."

Click...

A emaciated corpse fell back onto the bed.

Milo, Dirac, and Theon looked at each other in bewilderment.

Apart from Milo, the other two people couldn't see the shadow. From their perspective, Ethan's body had just been lifted straight into the air, struggled for a few seconds, and then stopped moving.

Such a bizarre way of dying was something neither of them had ever seen before, let alone heard of.

Milo watched as Maggie's shadow slowly left the bed and stood outside the secret room again.

He turned to look at the two slightly intimidated people in front of him and shrugged:
"Um... I know it's disrespectful to say this now, but it seems like your hot potato has just been dealt with, and besides... the dead are your responsibility, right?"

“Well-reasoned and well-founded,” old Theon added casually.

"I need to report on this matter first, please excuse me."

Dillah Shaw was clearly still reeling from the bizarre visual shock he had just witnessed. He stepped forward to check Ethan's pulse, and after confirming that the man had completely stopped breathing, he hurriedly walked away.

Only Milo and old Theon remained in the secret chamber.

The latter, still clutching a half-smoked cigarette, muttered to himself with a complicated expression:

"This is definitely a fake, or it's mixed with cheap stuff..."
