Ke-style law enforcement officers
Chapter 158 Verification
Chapter 158 Verification
The morgue contained only a few metal tables and a shelf.
On the innermost wall hung some tools, well, tools used to break through certain sturdy human structures, such as saws and chisels.
After old Theon left the room, a shadow appeared on the wall, a human-shaped black figure.
It looked like a person kneeling on the ground, sobbing, but that was just Milo's speculation, because he couldn't hear any crying at all.
However, whether it was an illusion or not, Milo could sense the sadness emanating from the other person.
It sounds absurd, but Milo really did sense it.
"Maggie?"
Milo remained seated and did not stand up.
Compared to the terror he felt when he first saw the shadow, Milo is much calmer now.
He stared at the figure on the wall, raised his voice slightly, and tentatively asked:
"Maggie Green?"
The next second, the shadow who had been sobbing with her head down suddenly raised her head!
Milo instinctively reached for the handle of the gun at his waist.
But he soon discovered that the shadow on the wall seemed much more afraid than he was.
Just like Milo's reaction when he first clearly saw the other person's outline, he was shocked, but even more so, he was terrified.
The shadow on the wall struggled to retreat, trying to escape Milo's sight.
It seems that from the perspective of the shadow, it would be terrifying for a living person to discover its existence.
But for some reason, the shadow was horrified to find that it could neither leave the area of the wall nor hide.
It was like a caged animal, huddled in a corner of the wall, shivering.
……
Milo watched all of this calmly.
He suddenly remembered the ring he was holding in his hand.
Is it because of this?
Milo held the object up straight and asked the shadow in the corner of the wall.
He knew he couldn't hear the shadow's voice, but when he held up the ring, the shadow visibly trembled.
This essentially confirms Milo's guess.
"What kind of weird and wonderful setting is this?"
Milo clutched the ring, lost in thought.
He took off his gloves, grasped the cold ring in his hand, then raised his hand above the table and released it.
The ring fell onto the table and rolled down it.
The moment the ring left Milo's palm, the black figure in the corner of the wall vanished instantly.
But the next second, Milo slapped the ring that was about to roll off the table and onto the floor.
The moment his hand grasped the ring, the figure on the wall reappeared.
It seemed to be in great pain and fear, struggling for a long time, until finally giving up the resistance, clutching its head and curling up in the corner again.
Milo noticed that the shadow was positioned with its back to Joey's body.
It wasn't that it was afraid of the corpse, but rather that it was unwilling to face Joey's body.
I recalled what Joey had said before he died. He said the shadow was Maggie, that he communicated with Maggie through sign language, and that Maggie told him everything—Ethan wasn't dead…
It sounds like it might actually be true.
But Milo didn't know Maggie, and he couldn't be sure if the person on the wall was the female student who had disappeared more than a year ago.
Now that Joey is gone, his words are meaningless and cannot be verified.
Milo had no reason to believe the words of a madman. Who could guarantee that it wasn't Joey's mistaken judgment, or that the thing on the wall wasn't some evil entity?
What if its sadness and horror are all faked?
After encountering so many strange and unusual people, Milo has now learned his lesson. Some things are not necessarily true even when seen with one's own eyes, let alone the shadow he is seeing now. He can't even tell whether the shadow's owner is laughing or crying.
……
"So how do I verify her identity...?"
Milo stared at the shadow in the corner of the wall, lost in thought once again.
Joey said that Maggie Green was also a member of the Gus Society, and that she was most likely present on the night of the Great Library incident. If this shadow really is her, then solving the mystery of the disappearance will be very simple; she must know the truth.
"Members of the Gus Society..."
Suddenly, an image of a cute face that showed off its fangs when it smiled popped into Milo's mind.
Having made up his mind, he packed his things, got up, and left the morgue.
……
...
Twenty minutes later, Milo appeared on the riverbank downstream of the canal in the eastern district of Nanwei City, followed by Enid, whom he had dragged out of class.
Enid barked and yelled behind Milo:
"I'm warning you, even though we're close, I still have my pride. If you dragged me out of the classroom like that, dressed in a black trench coat, the teachers and classmates will think I've done something wrong."
She was probably outraged by Milo's rude behavior and launched into a tirade of insults.
Even in its frenzied state, the little wildcat didn't seem to pose any threat.
An uninformed passerby would probably think she was being coquettish.
"I'm really fed up. I'm definitely going to tell Emma on you. You rude jerk! Do you even know how many cute junior students I'll lose the admiration of after my reputation is damaged? You bastard Milo!"
However, it is clear that verbal attacks have no effect on Milo.
No matter how much she yelled and cursed, Milo didn't respond at all. Instead, he seriously got down to business:
"Didn't Mr. Smith give you a tattered note yesterday? You solved the puzzle on it and found the corresponding stone block, right?"
"What?" Enid was probably tired of yelling, panting and pouting, not really wanting to talk to Milo.
"Is that piece of paper still there?" Milo asked.
“Yes, I’m here.” Enid pulled a crumpled note from her backpack.
"Now, put your intelligence to use and modify the puzzle. Keep the general framework of the puzzle unchanged, but slightly adjust the final number of stone blocks. This shouldn't be too difficult for a clever little brain like yours, right?" Milo rubbed Enid's head, only to have his hand slapped away fiercely by her.
"You dragged me all this way just for this? My God, is working in the law enforcement office this easy?" Enid rolled her eyes and turned to leave.
“Hey, to put it bluntly, as a future law enforcement officer, shouldn’t you make the most of your good friends within the law enforcement system?” Milo said, shrugging.
"...makes sense."
Enid paused for three seconds, then turned back the way she came.
