Chapter 3900 The Trail of the Big-Toothed Sparrow

“Of course not. I’m not sure how often Detective Sparrow meets Big Mouth Sparrow, and the chances of him being in town right now are slim. If he really does show up when we arrive, I’d suspect that this is all someone’s doing.”

As he spoke, having experienced the story of fate, he no longer believed in coincidences:
“I just want to check the hotel records in town. They certainly wouldn’t have registered under their real identities, but luckily I got most of the information about ‘Grey Hawk’ from Margaret and know about the fake identities he’s used.”

Once I find out the year and date Detective Sparrow stayed here, I can determine the frequency of his meetings with 'Big Mouth Sparrow' and the timing of their next meeting. If, by chance, there are other strange people in the hotel appearing at the same frequency as Detective Sparrow, the identity of the still-unidentified agent 'Big Mouth Sparrow' might be confirmed.

Of course, all of this is predicated on them actually staying in the town, and the Big-Toothed Sparrow always using the same identity.

This matter is complicated, but it is very simple for Shad and Daniste, since it only involves ordinary people.

Although the town was small, there were two modest hotels because a train passed through it. Shad and Denise went to each one that morning. Denise hypnotized the hotel owner and found the register for the last ten years. Shad then used "speed reading" to look for familiar names.

Shad was actually worried that when Detective Sparrow arrived, he would use a hastily chosen pseudonym that even "Grey Gloves" hadn't recorded. But fortunately, Shad found the name he was looking for very smoothly at the first hotel.

“Detective Sparrow comes every two years, and has been doing so for eight years now. The last time he came was in the spring of 1853, which is about a month from now. So, his next meeting with Big-Toothed Sparrow should be coming soon.”

"What kind of intelligence are your uncle and 'Big-Mouthed Sparrow' meeting here to exchange? Why are they doing this so discreetly, and why does it happen every two years?"

Daniste inquired, and Shad was also puzzled, but considering that "Grey Hawk" was the most elite ace agent, anything was possible:
"However, I'm not sure if the Big-billed Sparrow will come again this year. Although the death of the Grey-headed Eagle hasn't spread, perhaps the two of them will do some things before meeting, such as determining the specific time and place, and looking for other people who appear at the same frequency."

Detective Sparrow used the same name to check into hotels every two years when he visited. Luckily, "Big Mouth Sparrow" did the same. Although he stayed at another hotel in town, Shad quickly found him based on his check-in date.

The alias of "Big-Mouthed Sparrow" is Leon Elwood, a name that is also unremarkable. Shad even asked the hypnotized hotel owner about his impression of this guest who visits every two years.

Unfortunately, the hotel owner's memory of "Lion Elwood" was not clear; the man was not the kind of person who was very memorable.

The trail seemed to have ended there, but Denise then planted a psychological suggestion in the innkeeper, instructing him to immediately send a letter to the nearest Institute Assets organization the next time "Lion Elwood" visited the inn, so that Shad would know of his presence in time.

The sorceress holding the egg raised an eyebrow at Shad, who then sighed.

“I just don’t want to disturb Detective Sparrow’s rest any longer. If Detective Sparrow were involved with the supernatural, I would probably suspect there might be another truth behind his sudden death in the summer of 1853.”

When the two returned to No. 6 St. Teresa Place, it was 10 a.m. on Saturday. Shad thought no one would be home, but to his surprise, Dorothy, Galina, Emilia, and even Ellie were there.

The girls seemed to be having a tea party, and they were all extremely surprised after Daniste walked down from the third floor with Shad, carrying the egg:

"Dannister, you and Shad were gone for a week, and this is what you got?"

The joke was obviously made by Dorothy. Galina hated jokes about eggs, Emilia wouldn't dare joke with Danist, and Ellie had no idea what the joke meant.

Since the chosen ones of space, time, and destiny were all present, Shad did not let Daniste leave. Instead, he explained the origin of the egg to everyone and asked them if they had a way to create life and make seeds sprout.

Galina certainly didn't have one, and although Dorothy had read many fairy tales, she couldn't think of a solution for the time being. Emilia, upon hearing that the egg contained the previous librarian, excitedly suggested that she could speed up the hatching process.

Dorothy simply listened with a smile as Shad continued to tell her story about the "Big-billed Sparrow." The writer was pleased that Shad had managed to return today instead of staying another night in the Karas Mountains.

After all, today is the twenty-first day of the Wind Rises, a Saturday that belongs to her and Lacey.

During the week that Shad was away from Tobesk, nothing much happened at home, except that Galina would occasionally stay overnight to reminisce about her lover who had gone far away.

The weather in Tobeske also seemed to have changed from late winter before Shad left to early spring in just one week.

The fireplace in the house is no longer lit, and the flowers Luvia kept on the windowsill are coming back to life. The pigeons that Xiaomia missed have reappeared in the square waiting to be fed, and the people on the street are changing from winter clothes to spring attire.

In addition, Galina and Dorothy also told about the events on Shadfatummont Island.

Now, only Claire remains as a witch on the island; Sylvie and Miss Elizabeth have already left. Preparations for the "Hall of the Rings," responsible for managing the Ring of Fate and the ruins, have been completed. The witch and the writer together helped Shad fill in the gaps in what had happened during the week, and Dorothy added at the end:
