The Most Powerful Brain in the Interstellar Space
Chapter 380 The Library
Chapter 380 The Library (Part 2)
Sheda Caro was a little unaccustomed to it.
The environment of Beska Intermediate Academy is different from that of Wanhe Middle School. Both of these intermediate academies are considered top academies on Star 732, and their teaching styles are quite distinctive.
Wanhe Middle School leans towards academics, with relatively few pure military majors, and it focuses on small-class elite education. Its technical research majors are quite strong, with dedicated teams leading students to numerous honors in various interstellar competitions. The mecha department is also one of the school's key development areas, ranking among the top three in the entire school.
Beska Intermediate Academy, on the other hand, is known as a talent pool for future trainees. Because it is funded by the military, the school focuses on developing military-related majors, and the overall teaching style of both general and military majors bears a clear militaristic influence.
In terms of overall teaching strength, Wanhe Middle School is actually stronger, while the latter is more diverse.
However, Wanhe Middle School also has some significant teaching problems. It is actually a chain of schools, with corresponding institutions in the inner star system and the central star system. The one in the permanent star system is just one of its branches.
Because of its hierarchical structure, Wanhe Middle School inevitably places great emphasis on background and seniority, making it a typical key school. The entire school is full of top students, including the teachers. Without real ability, one would be discriminated against, and mediocre people who just coast along are not welcome.
While Besca Intermediate Academy does consider applicants, it accepts students with particular strengths or those who are well-rounded. The school encourages students to explore their abilities and try new things; even if they don't achieve anything significant, there will still be a community to support them. Students come from diverse backgrounds, but there isn't an overly obvious hierarchy of disdain.
Needless to say, the teachers at Beska Intermediate Academy are also highly regarded; six or seven out of ten of them have military backgrounds or are related professionals. After all, this is part of the Eighth Legion's territory, and they can't just allow any faction to plant their own people here.
Overall, this is a down-to-earth school with a simple and unpretentious style.
Carlo feels alright here, unlike the oppressive atmosphere at Wanhe Middle School. He just doesn't know if he hasn't discovered the deeper issues yet or if this place is just that simple.
Anyway, Carlo has adapted fairly well since being transferred here, except for one thing that he is still not quite used to.
The students here are a bit more relaxed, and the library is relatively sparsely populated after class, unlike the more intense atmosphere at Wanhe Middle School.
This pained Carlo greatly. How could the children, especially those mecha students who needed long-term, in-depth learning, be so relaxed during such a crucial time for study?!
He then took some time to investigate the library and discovered why so few students came to it; the problem lay in the collection of books at Beska Intermediate Academy.
I don't know if this is a common problem in military-oriented schools, but they always seem to lack consideration for the humanities.
Beska Intermediate Academy places a heavy emphasis on practical courses. The school spends a lot of money purchasing mechs, experimental equipment, and arranging various field trips for students, even hiring renowned teachers from different fields to provide specialized instruction… However, they haven't given much consideration to students' self-study opportunities after class. The library was built to standard specifications and has a large collection of books, but most of them were purchased in bulk during construction and simply left untouched in the library without any review or selection. Normally, high schools like this would conduct an annual inventory and review of their collections, discarding unsuitable editions and updating existing ones. But Beska Intermediate Academy lacks all of this; the library's management is extremely lax.
Carlo even found several misprinted editions in the mecha section of the library, editions that should have been recalled and destroyed over a hundred years ago. Yet they're still there, safely displayed in the library's mecha section for students to browse and study—isn't that absurd?
He could understand that military-affiliated academies tended to be rough around the edges, but he couldn't comprehend how lax they were in terms of academic culture. Regardless of the level of the academy, the library was supposed to be the most easily accessible public knowledge base for students.
For students with limited resources, free and publicly accessible libraries were the starting point of their dreams.
Besca Intermediate Academy cannot continue like this. Now that the school has hired him as a senior instructor and given him certain teaching authority, he is now a teacher at the school, and Sheda Caro must be responsible for his students.
He couldn't control the students in other majors, but the students in the mecha department absolutely couldn't continue to make do with this outdated and obsolete library for the next three years. Therefore, Carlo submitted a report to the school board, and after receiving permission, he personally compiled a new list and sent it over to them to purchase suitable books.
As for those outdated, misprinted books that should have been discarded, the school wasn't sure. Some of them were rare, unique copies that wouldn't be outdated even today, and were hard to find on the market; discarding them all would be a waste. So Carlo volunteered to help with a new round of screening.
He planned to spend a few nights cleaning up the inappropriate versions in the mecha section, and he would try to check the situation in other sections. He wouldn't be able to handle anything that went too far beyond his expertise, so he'd see if the school was willing to take the time to deal with it.
The last two times he came, the school opened the door for him directly, and neither of the two librarians were on duty, so this was the first time the other person had met Carlo.
After I explained my purpose, the administrator seemed a little surprised, but he still readily agreed to help.
Sheda Caro breathed a sigh of relief. He had actually prepared himself for the possibility of complaining if the administrator thought he was causing trouble and refused to help… He could do it himself, but it wouldn't be as good as having someone who knew the situation to help. Sure enough, the people at Beska Intermediate Academy were quite easy to talk to; most of the people he encountered were quite friendly.
The librarian immediately hung up the "Service Out of Service" sign, stepped out from behind the automated sorting station, and was about to follow Carlo to the mecha section. Then he suddenly remembered—wait, there seemed to be other people in the library. Five had left, and it looked like only one person remained…
It was that student who liked to flip through books; she was still in the reading area. Should he ask her to come out first? Anyway, there were only about forty minutes left before closing time, and he figured she would understand if he explained the situation to her.
