Chapter 99 Two Balls of Yarn
Oh no, that bastard Lao Yang is going to use me as a guinea pig!
This was the last thought that flashed through Wu Xiaoxie's mind before he lost consciousness.

After an unknown amount of time, Wu Xiaoxie regained consciousness and opened his eyes groggily. He found himself in a tree hollow. The hollow was quite large, and a few cocoons were still hanging from the vines hanging from the ceiling.

He felt something binding his face, which felt a bit stuffy. He tried to reach out and remove it, but found himself tied up on the ground. His mind went blank for a moment.

Despite the aches and pains all over his body, Wu Xiaoxie struggled to get up. Through the mask covering his face, he saw Lao Yang sitting by the fire. Lao Yang was wearing a gas mask and turned his head to look at him when he realized that Wu Xiaoxie was awake.

"woke up?"

The sound came through the gas mask, sounding somewhat muffled.

Wu Xiaoxie blinked but didn't say anything.

Lao Yang walked over with a can of food in his hand and squatted down in front of Wu Xiaoxie, saying, "Eat something now that you're awake."

He reached out and removed the gas mask from Wu Xiaoxie's face, then scooped up some biscuit paste with a spoon and brought it to Wu Xiaoxie's lips. "Eat."

Wu Xiaoxie snapped out of her daze and finally understood what was going on. She looked at him expressionlessly and asked, "Where did you put the wooden fish?"

Lao Yang gave a wry smile and shook his head, "I don't know either."

Wu Xiaoxie chuckled and said coldly, "That wooden fish was you in disguise, wasn't it? Because I trust the wooden fish more than you, you transformed into his appearance to continue deceiving me. Unfortunately, you couldn't understand him thoroughly in such a short time. When you realized I was suspicious, you immediately turned back into your original form."

Details he had previously overlooked resurfaced. For example, Muyu's own blood was far more effective against insects than his own, a bloodline he had acquired halfway through his cultivation journey. Yet, when he climbed the Bronze Tree Altar and saw those cicada-like insects, he clearly hesitated. And Muyu, being such a picky person, would never eat hard, tasteless compressed biscuits when there were delicious treats in his treasure chest—because Lao Yang was unaware of Muyu's secret.

"Your target from the beginning was me, so Muyu and Master Liang were just unnecessary obstacles. That's why you used that power to bring the banyan vines back to life and take them away." Wu Xiaoxie continued to expose him, questioning, "The person in the third cocoon hanging here is Boss Wang, right? Don't try to deny it. I saw the big gold chain around his neck. Master Liang is probably dead too, so where's Muyu? Where did you put him?"

Lao Yang was stunned for a while, then suddenly burst out laughing, laughing so hard that he couldn't hold the can in his hand. Helpless, he had to put it down, sit down with a thud, look up at the ceiling, and let out a long sigh. He said, "Wu Xie, you really... are still so smart."

"When I was a kid, you fooled me all the time. Now that I'm all grown up, I finally managed to fool you again, but you still saw through me." Lao Yang said with a wry smile, "Yes, I did use the vines to take Mu Yu and the others away, but I didn't intend to kill them. They were carrying weapons when they were taken away, and the vines could only hold them for a while. I only knew that there was a maze-like tree hole here, so I used the vines to bring them here."

“But they’re dead,” Wu Xiaoxie said.

He had no doubt that if he weren't tied up, he would have jumped up and beaten Lao Yang half to death.

“Yes, they’re dead.” Lao Yang nodded, and seeing the growing murderous intent in Wu Xiaoxie’s eyes, he quickly added, “But I only found the bodies of Boss Wang and Master Liang.”

Wu Xiaoxie was taken aback. "What do you mean?"

Lao Yang turned around and pulled out two tangled balls of yarn from his backpack, saying, "I found this in the maze. This maze has more than one exit, so Mu Yu must have used this as a guide to get out."

Upon hearing this, Wu Xiaoxie stared at him suspiciously for a long time. Seeing that his expression didn't seem fake, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
