Chapter 436 Chaos
While Roland was busy fretting over his kingdom's food supply, the dwarves and orcs in the Misty Mountains stumbled upon each other by sheer luck, and thus, the dwarven reinforcements from the Blue Mountains and the orcs of Gombard Fortress engaged in a fierce battle on the western slopes of the Misty Mountains...
Ironically, the orcs were somewhat clever this time, though not in particularly large numbers... About three thousand orc soldiers from the Gombada Fortress were lying in ambush at the west gate of Moria, only to run into the Blue Mountains dwarven reinforcements. Normally, three thousand orc soldiers would have been no big deal for the dwarves, but the Blue Mountains dwarven reinforcements had brought their families with them...
The result was a brutal, one-sided battle. The orcs wanted to swallow the dwarven reinforcements whole, but lacked the strength. While the Blue Mountains dwarven reinforcements could easily overpower the orcs, they were burdened with a large number of non-combatants and their families. The dwarves who had divided their forces to protect the women and children were now incredibly frustrated. Thousands of dwarves were blocked at the western gate of Moria by a small detachment of the Gombak orcs. To make matters worse, many Blue Mountains dwarves had already migrated towards Irubor and Moria, resulting in a majority of women and children among this new group. The most absurd thing was that when the dwarves assembled their forces, they discovered that after deducting those protecting the women and children, they could only muster an army of less than 200 men… This was ridiculous! The Turin race weren't Iron Man; anyone with a brain could see the outcome of 200 against 3000—quantity had already overwhelmed quality…
What to do? The dwarves discussed it. Well, they couldn't enter Moria, and they couldn't return to the Blue Mountains either. Ogres and orcs were roaming around, so the dwarves of the Blue Mountains could only send the women and children back to the Horde region. The remaining 200 warriors stayed near the west of Moria and played a tacit war with the orcs. After probing each other for several days without finding anything, they finally stopped fighting and lay down, waiting for news from the main battlefield.
……
Dain, on the east side, was much more irritable. His 1200 Ironfoot soldiers were his greatest source of confidence. When he learned that the Behemoth had been severely wounded by the Moria garrison, Dain decisively ordered his soldiers to launch a strong attack on the orcs and attacked the badly injured Bronze Behemoth again, causing the Behemoth to go berserk again and charge into the orc camp. At this time, Dain and his men hid in the distance, watching the orcs spinning and flying into the sky, marveling at them.
"Your Highness! Why don't we just charge into Qazadoom?" the adjutant beside him asked, puzzled.
"Charge straight in? How wide is the gate to Qazadoom? How many people are there in Balin and Thorin combined? Is there enough room to maneuver there? It's better to stay outside and support them!" Dain said, waving his beard. Besides, with the Dragonhawk Knights watching outside, there's no need to worry about being surrounded and trapped by the Orc army.
While the Blue Mountain dwarves were frustrated by being trapped at the west gate of Moria, Dain and his Ironfoot army were having a great time outside, occasionally catching and slaughtering small groups of lone orcs. The orc army was furious, but helpless. If they sent too many men, these iron-canned creatures would run away at a speed that didn't match their size; if they sent too few, these scoundrels would turn around and be swallowed whole. The orcs were utterly helpless against this rogue army. If Roland knew, he would definitely say a few words. Look at how the guerrilla warfare forced upon him by the dwarf king had been learned. Although it was still very crude, it was more than enough in Middle-earth, a strange world where there was no military strategy to speak of.
Dain quickly discovered this useful tactic, which allowed him to slowly bleed the orcs without much danger. It was a pleasant surprise for Dain, who hated him intensely and repeatedly deployed heavy crossbows, catapults, and other heavy attack vehicles near him. However, after suffering two defeats, Dain learned his lesson and developed a new twist on dwarven guerrilla warfare. The incredibly strong dwarves, with four of them carrying a single dwarven heavy crossbow, could easily keep up with the army and run all over the place...
So this interdimensional guerrilla force, essentially equipped with an interdimensional RPG, became an even bigger headache for the orcs. Before, they would harass them up close, but now they would launch heavy crossbow attacks from a great distance, regardless of accuracy. Dain just wanted to have fun, bringing the orcs greetings of steel and flames every morning, noon, and night, more punctual than a rooster crowing.
……
Soon, the orcs at the gates of Moria could no longer contain themselves. The orcs from the Dolgodor Fortress suddenly broke away from the outer perimeter of Moria's east gate and charged directly at Dain. Their ferocious appearance was even more lethal than the Battle of Lonely Mountain.
"Damn it! These bastards can't take a joke! They're actually pressing on us with their entire army! Aren't they going to surround Qazadoom?" Dain angrily smashed a tree as thick as a bowl in half with his fist. Tens of thousands of orcs pressing on like a dark mass was no laughing matter!
The real collapse came from the orc lords and generals. When, during lunch, a dwarven-style spear was fired from a heavy crossbow, piercing through the tents of two orc lords in the Dolgodor fortress – a double kill – the orcs of Dolgodor were in an uproar! The other orc high command dared not stay in luxurious tents anymore…
However, it did relieve Moria of some of its predicament. After the Orcs of Dolgodo chased Dain, the situation in Moria changed instantly. The Orcs could no longer trap the dwarves in Moria. Having lost the advantage of having a large army behind them, the Orcs of the Misty Mountains no longer sent troops to attack Moria. They only focused on surrounding the east gate, trying to blockade Moria... But could they really block it?
Less than a "kunshi" (two and a half hours) after the Orcs of Dolgodo left, Thorin led a group of men out and, after beheading nearly five hundred Orcs, elegantly strode away, leaving behind a group of heartbroken and helpless Orcs to collect the corpses. Clearly, the Orcs had not expected the Dwarves to actually come out... However, the Dwarven sentries lying in ambush at the exit of the secret passage had already informed Thorin of the changes in the Orc army.
Given Thorin's audacious nature, he would never miss an opportunity to gain an advantage. Thorin dared not attack the combined orcish forces of the two regions recklessly, but how could the mere orcish army of the Misty Mountains withstand the martial prowess of the Irubor dwarves? With cannon fodder lacking even leather armor? At least the dwarves could equip their soldiers with plate armor! (The southern human kingdoms weep, they can't afford it… they really can't afford it…)
As a result, the orc army in the Misty Mountains outside the east gate of Moria was ambushed and brutally defeated by the Moria garrison. Meanwhile, the orcs of Dolgodor, who went to hunt down the Iron Hill dwarves, also encountered an aerial attack by dragonhawk riders. After being hit by a burst of dragon breath, the orcs were so exhausted they wanted to die. There was no time to set up heavy crossbows for anti-air defense during their march. By the time the group of "gray beasts" disassembled and reassembled the heavy crossbows, the dragonhawk riders had already flapped their wings and flown away, leaving behind only the orc army ravaged by the dragon breath...
