The enormous tentacles slammed down on the tiny group, the earth trembled, and ferocious dire wolf riders surged in from all sides like a tidal wave.
The two collided, and the sharp, holy light-infused sword sliced through the orc's dark green hide, spurting blood that stained Theresa's fair face. The gaping dire wolf was trampled into the churning dust by the hooves of her warhorse.
She pointed her blood-stained holy sword at the night sky, like a torch in the darkness.
Caught in the chaos and fighting their own battles, the Templars and Dwarves, who were already in despair, suddenly had a glint of light in their eyes when they saw a golden banner fluttering in the distance on the battlefield.
The real battle for the Holy Army has only just begun.
All of this was observed by a crow lazily perched on the edge of a cliff.
……
"Your young lady is as fierce as a tigress, so you don't need to worry about that side right now."
Far from the battlefield, deep in a small mountain village on the west side of the island, Ye Xiao offered simple words of comfort to Reinaldo.
"..."
Reinaldo, still unable to contact Theresa, sighed. He didn't know if he could trust this suspicious guy in front of him, but if his base was really in crisis, he didn't seem to have much of a choice.
Ye Xiao wasn't in a hurry to urge Reinaldo. Saying too much might only lead to more mistakes; the guy needed to calm down first.
However, he took the opportunity to first appease the villagers nearby.
These villagers, with their dark spots and signs of degeneration, all looked terrified. As soon as Ye Xiao approached, they shrank back.
"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, I'm here to help you."
Ye Xiao waved to the thin villagers, "Look, those tin canneries over there have put away their swords after I persuaded them, you're safe now."
The villagers looked at each other, but still dared not approach Ye Xiao, who was dressed in black.
Ye Xiao helplessly put his hands on his hips, and could only say that it was a pity that his handsomeness was still slightly different from that of his holy maiden's beautiful face, and that he was not very approachable.
If things weren't so chaotic over there, it would be much easier to persuade Reinaldo and the villagers if Ella could come over.
He then stopped approaching to avoid provoking the already frightened villagers.
"How did you get these...dark spots on your bodies?"
He asked softly, "To be honest, these are sexual characteristics corrupted by evil gods, and they will erode your lives. Believe me, I can help you heal these problems."
The villagers trembled, their faces filled with terror. One of the slightly bolder women slowly shook her head, "No...don't."
"Huh? What you have is an illness, not some blessing from the gods,"
Ye Xiao scratched his head, "If we don't treat it, there will be problems."
"...We know."
The woman murmured, then slowly opened her mouth, her hoarse voice like tearing rags, "Sir...we voluntarily contracted this disease."
"what?"
Ye Xiao was stunned. "Why?"
"My lord...we are a human village...but this island is infested with orcs and monsters."
"We prayed to the sanctuary, to the goddess... and all we got in return was plunder and slaughter..."
"We can only survive if we pray to Him..."
Chapter Forty-Three: The Dark Well
Ye Xiao paused for a moment, then glanced at Reinaldo standing to the side.
The latter had a complicated expression, clearly having also heard what the village woman said.
Ye Xiao turned his gaze back, pondered for a moment, then took out some food from his spatial ring and handed it to the villagers huddled together. "That's all in the past. From now on, the Holy Temple will take on the responsibility of taking care of you."
"Hey, when did I say I was going to take on this?"
Reinaldo spoke.
Although he generally sensed that the villagers were not in control of their own destiny, Reinaldo still harbored some stubbornness. Most importantly, he had not obtained Theresa's permission to add these troubles to his family.
"Who said you were supposed to take on this responsibility?"
Ye Xiao turned around.
"Besides me, who else could be in this 'sanctuary'? What, are you also a knight from the Holy City?"
"Holy City?"
Ye Xiao sneered, "The Holy City has no right to confer a medal upon me."
Reinaldo raised an eyebrow, showing his confusion.
"You should have thought it through by now, right? Stop dawdling."
Ye Xiao stood up. "To fight the evil god, or not?"
"It seems I don't have a choice."
Reinaldo snorted coldly, "But where to go? These villagers seem unwilling to reveal any information about that evil god."
Whether they say it or not is irrelevant.
Ye Xiao pointed with his thumb to the ancient well in the center of the square, "The place we're looking for is most likely there."
Reinaldo's face turned pale when he saw the well.
He seemed to see again the scene of his two men being eerily dragged down into that well.
"Don't be afraid, brother, I've got your back."
Ye Xiao smiled and waved to the forest beside her.
"Who said I'm scared..."
Just as Reinaldo opened his mouth to speak, a hoarse roar of anger came from the woods.
"I didn't say I was scared, you stupid human!"
A black dog suddenly appeared, speaking in human language, "Let me tell you! If that guy hadn't ambushed me, I would have smashed his head to pieces!"
"Yes Yes Yes."
Ye Xiao waved again, "So can you come over and give directions? Is that the kid who bullied you hiding in the well?"
A talking dog...?
Reinaldo looked completely bewildered.
"Strictly speaking, she's not a dog. By the way, what did you just say?"
"No, it's nothing."
Reinaldo's gaze wandered.
"How pitiful!"
As they were talking, a childish voice came from Ye Xiao's collar.
But then a golden kitten poked its head out, nestled against Ye Xiao's chest, and looked at the black dog on the ground with a mocking expression, licking its paws. "It says it's not afraid, but its body is trembling."
"You stupid cat!"
The black dog jumped back and forth angrily, "Fine, I'll lead the way! But if things go wrong later, don't expect me to help you!!"
"Hmph, I never expected a mere dog slave to be of any help anyway~"
Greta used her soft paws to make a delicate, orchid-like gesture with her fingers.
"You were secretly reading comics under my clothes, weren't you...?"
Ye Xiao's expression became somewhat tense upon hearing the cat's incongruous lines.
"These two magical creatures are your companions?"
Reinaldo was surprised.
"Actually, there's one more."
After Ye Xiao finished speaking, he waved to the shadows under a house, "Miss Fisher, you can come out now."
After saying that, a black-haired girl dressed in a black and white maid dress quietly walked out from under the eaves.
"...There's another one hidden here?"
Reinaldo looked bewildered. Were his Templar Knights just sitting around doing nothing? How could they have come and gone without noticing a single one of them?
As for the villager Tuolin, Ye Xiao naturally sent him away using a spatial portal for safety reasons.
"Captain...Captain!"
A call came, and only then did the dozen or so Templar Knights who had chased all the way to the other side of the village finally return. "Sorry... we lost track of that... that black-clad heretic."
Having just finished his report and approaching, the Templar Knight saw the "heretic" they were talking about standing with Reinaldo. "Huh?"
"That was just a misunderstanding."
Reinaldo waved his hand dismissively and explained.
Ye Xiao had already circled back; these guys had been chasing him for ages and they still didn't know what they were chasing.
The knights then regrouped, with a small group staying behind to watch over the villagers, while the rest, along with Reinaldo and Ye Xiao, went to the well.
That gloomy feeling returned, and while Reinaldo hesitated, Ye Xiao walked straight to the well and looked down.
"Hey you……"
Reinaldo wanted to remind him, but Ye Xiao waved him off.
"Do you have a rope? This well is a bit deep."
"Do you need a rope to go down?"
Reinaldo asked in surprise.
"Of course I don't need it."
Ye Xiao looked at Reinaldo as if he were an idiot, "But are all your men going to jump down with me?"
Reinaldo clicked his tongue and then directed the knights around him to take out the climbing ropes they were carrying on horseback.
Given the high mountains and treacherous terrain, these items were naturally essential for the scout team's exploration and movement.
After securing the rope to the ground with climbing spikes, Ye Xiao took the lead, gracefully flipping down into the well.
But less than two seconds after he went down, he suddenly climbed back up, grabbed the collar around the neck of the black dog that was still looking out from the well, and pulled it down with him.
"Woof woof woof!!! You stupid human..."
The black dog's roar was then swallowed up in the deep well.
Next up is Reinaldo.
He swallowed hard, walked to the well, and looked down, only to see a long climbing rope extending into an endless darkness.
The light that shone from the well seemed to be swallowed up by the dense darkness.
But after only a second or two of hesitation, Reinaldo stepped forward. With so many of his knights watching, he couldn't afford to be intimidated.
As a Grandmaster-level Templar Knight, he wouldn't need any rope to go down into this well unless there were some strange forces interfering.
He summoned a wisp of magic from his palm, and he easily adhered to the edge of the wall.
Although it is a well, it is clear that no one has drawn water from it for many years.
The edges of the well wall were uneven, and in the holy light emanating from the tip of his other finger, one could see that the cracks in the bricks were covered with dark green moss.
As you descend along the vertical shaft, the damp, gloomy atmosphere you feel from above grows stronger and stronger.
The surroundings were shrouded in darkness, and gradually the top and bottom could not be seen either.
The utter silence filled the dark, narrow space, and Reinaldo felt as if he were drifting away from the world, slowly sliding into the abyss of hell.
Fortunately, it was just his imagination.
As he slowly approached the bottom of the well, he soon saw Ye Xiao below, holding a staff and lighting a beam of blue light.
