Their Legion was designated by the Emperor as an expert in combating non-human xenos, and indeed they were. During the Great Crusade, by absorbing the strengths of the enemy and developing targeted strategies, they were unstoppable in their battles against the xenos.
And Fearless also stood out in this process. Because of his outstanding record in hunting aliens, he was respected by his brothers around him and was called "Hunter".
As time went by, no one even remembered his name, only knowing that he was called Hunter. He was obsessed with it and also enjoyed this title. He felt that this title was proof that he had outstandingly completed the mission given to their legion by the Emperor. Therefore, he simply gave up his real name and hunted among the stars as a Hunter, killing more enemies of mankind for the Emperor.
But being strong never comes without a price. They become experts in fighting aliens because they can absorb the genes of their opponents, but absorbing too much genes from others also causes some brothers to suffer irreversible flesh and blood mutations.
Although those brothers still had clear consciousness, the non-human limbs that evolved from them gradually changed their behavior. They began to try more and more non-human behaviors, which made the hunters feel vaguely uneasy.
But seeing that the Third Legion, which once suffered from the Blight, was reborn from the ashes after finding its own Primarch Fulgrim, the Hunter felt that as long as he could find his own Primarch, all problems would be solved.
But he never thought that the Primarch had gone further than them on this path.
Hunter and his brothers found their Primarch on a primitive planet called Zerus.
It was a planet with special parasitic creatures called primitive zerg. Those swarms would parasitize the bodies of other monsters, absorb their cerebrospinal fluid, and after obtaining the other's genes, devour and assimilate them from within their bodies.
Their Primarch was born on a human-controlled spaceship, where he learned basic human language and common sense, but the spaceship soon crashed on the planet Zerus, and the only survivor on the spaceship, the Primarch, soon became a part of the deformed ecological chain on the planet Zerus.
He imitated the original Zerg and began to plunder the genes of other creatures, even the original Zerg, to evolve himself, in order to protect himself on the monster-infested planet. When the hunter found his original, although he still had a roughly human form, his hands, which had mutated into pincers, his mantis-like jumping feet, and his scorpion-like tail stinger, all betrayed his uniqueness.
"Who are you? Where did you come from?" He heard his less-than-human Primarch ask, "I can sense a subtle connection between you and me. Who are you?"
He suppressed his nausea and revealed his identity to the Primarch. After learning that these legion soldiers were his genetic descendants, the Primarch's attitude became quite enthusiastic. He even shared his "delicacies" with the soldiers and taught them which part of the monster to eat in order to better obtain the experience of evolving their own genes.
The warriors were moved by the Primarch's selflessness, but the Hunter stood apart from them. He always felt that his brothers were no longer seeking to defeat the enemy by acquiring the enemy's genes, but were instead obsessed with the process of plundering genes. The Primarch's return not only did not change this situation, but actually exacerbated this phenomenon in the Legion.
He had hoped that returning to human life would change the Primarch's mindset, but he soon discovered he was wrong. The Primarch's exceptional ability in genetic manipulation allowed him to easily evolve or degenerate back into an ordinary human, and he simply preferred to remain in a non-human state.
This preference, which itself symbolizes an attitude, is emulated by the Space Marines who follow their Primarchs, but ordinary Space Marines do not have the same outstanding genetic manipulation capabilities as the Primarchs, and their imitation of the Primarchs is often irreversible.
Seeing the entire Legion hurtling towards the abyss of inhumanity, the Hunter tentatively proposed destroying the primordial Zerg of Zerus, hoping to halt the Legion's degeneration. Unsurprisingly, this proposal was rejected by the Primarch.
"Don't you think the way these Zerg survive has something to offer us?"
The Primarch replied, "By devouring the genes of others, we will become larger and stronger. This will be the way for our Legion to survive. I will lead our Legion to become truly ultimate creatures, an 'evolved swarm' that will march into the universe!"
"But we are humans who hunt aliens. Obtaining genes is just a means of hunting. It should not be the purpose of our hunting itself!" the hunter retorted.
"Only creatures higher up the food chain have the right to hunt those lower down. Endless evolution is the fundamental guarantee of our continued hunting. Hunter, as a veteran of the Legion, I thought you already understood this principle."
The Primarch's eyes seemed to hold blue flames. "Since my father has endowed you and me with the ability to evolve, we should enjoy the process. Besides, don't you find the unpredictable changes that come with absorbing genes wonderful?"
"Although you, Father, are free to control the evolution and degeneration of living things, many of the brothers who followed your example have already experienced severe mutations in their flesh and blood. From the perspective of the Human Empire, it's difficult to even call them human..."
The hunter wanted the Primarch to consider the fate of the Legion more, but was rudely interrupted by the Primarch: "Definition? Whose definition? Who can define them as not human?"
"Of course, it's based on the divisions of science and Imperial truth. Any creature with a human skull is considered human."
"Who formulates science, and who formulates imperial truth?"
The Primarch demanded, "Have you not seen those demihumans who were isolated on their own planets and mutated by the local environment? The demihumans we exterminated before, because they lived in a high-pressure environment, their skull structure gradually changed through generations of inheritance. Even though they still considered themselves human, the Empire had already issued an extermination order for us!"
"Tell me, Hunter, is the science you speak of truly scientific? It's nothing more than a standard set for you by others. If you live by those standards, your brain will become someone else's racetrack!"

Chapter 10: A Story from 1,000 Years Ago (Part 2)
"We are human beings, and we are also evolution itself. Our ability to adapt to various environments is the true direction of humanity's future!"
The Primarch stood up and looked at the hunter with pride. "I have communicated with an ancient being. Soon, I will enable my warriors to master the ever-changing ways of free evolution, just as I have."
"You are an old descendant of Terra, and you have old-fashioned ideas. I don't blame you. If you cannot accept this, I allow you to lead the equally dissatisfied warriors to leave, leave this newly born Second Legion under my leadership, and leave my Iron Swarm!"
Just like that, the hunter left. He led the warriors who followed him to form the White Wind Company, and was exiled to the edge of the Astronomican and even to a new world outside the Astronomican to embark on a hunt that was doomed to end in death.
They rarely received supplies, could hardly recruit new soldiers, and even had to fight against unknown threats outside the Astronomican without the Astronomican's guidance. But under the leadership of the hunters, they tenaciously defeated one enemy after another and withstood threats again and again.
This tragic winning streak continued until the wrecked space ship mysteriously appeared in front of Baifeng Dalian.
To eliminate the threat this space hulk could pose to the Empire, Hunter led the White Wind Company aboard it. However, believing it was just a routine raid, he was disturbed to discover that the hulk contained many biological specimens similar to the original Zerg on Zerus.
It's just that they are more powerful and more organized than the original Zerg.
Most of these specimens possess sharp claws and extraordinary biological weapons, and lack the reproductive organs that normal creatures should have. Their evolution is so precise that they are like biological machines born only for killing.
Just when the hunters were worried about the existence of these bugs, a group of blue aliens suddenly appeared on the ship through psychic teleportation.
They performed some kind of ritual to drag the space hulk into the warp, and without Geller's stance activated, a steady stream of blue aliens inexplicably emerged from the space hulk and surrounded the Space Marines.
It was on that day that the hunter first learned of the existence of demons.
The psychic flames of the Tzeentch Archdemon burned through his body, but even more tormenting than these psychic sorceries was the questioning from the depths of his heart – the fate of the entire company and even the legion had rested on his shoulders, yet he had made the most erroneous decision. And now, nothing could be undone.
“Everything is going according to plan!”
The Tzeentch Archdaemon across from him laughed boisterously. "You once renounced your name, your Legion, and your Primarch. Now, you, a loser who has lost everything, will lose your life here! The Lord of Change, who collaborated with your Primarch, has already determined your fate. And I, Xerath, will use your predetermined destiny to put on a spectacular show for the Lord of Change!"
The hunter said nothing. He carried a two-handed power greatsword and tried to find a flaw in the body of the Tzeentch. He did cause a lot of damage to the Tzeentch, but it was all in vain.
The demon on the opposite side had already revealed to him his true nature as a creature of the Warp. Like the ordinary demons that were besieging other Space Marines in the ship, he would simply return to the Warp if killed and be reborn after a period of gestation.
He fought the demon in exchange for his life, and finally killed the demon's body before he was seriously injured and fell unconscious. But the demon's soul was still laughing wildly, mocking the hunter's actions.
"You are far stronger than I thought, but I am a demon, and I cannot be killed! I will always be by your side, letting you witness the dark future you and your brothers face, until you surrender to our Lord with despair! And I will use this achievement to further advance in the future led by our Lord!"
----
The story finally ended here. Armidale, Lieutenant Wigan, Sergeant Arlo and Adjutant Abbott looked at each other in bewilderment.
Although they still couldn't understand what demons and Tzeentch were, this didn't prevent them from realizing that their own fate and even the fate of the legion had been manipulated by the mastermind from the very beginning.
"I don't know what happened after I fell unconscious." Hunter Fearless asked, "Brother Armidale, can you tell me?"
"Our Tech Sergeant, Brother Hypa, successfully reactivated the Geller Field aboard the Space Hulk. After the restart, we discovered that the number of those blue aliens...demons had not continued to increase. We managed to eliminate the remaining demons on the ship, collected the remains of our fallen brothers, and found you, severely injured, on the bridge of the Space Hulk."
Armidel continued, "After we sent you aboard our only dreadnought, we began attempting to escape the warp turbulence. Eventually, we escaped the warp and crashed onto this primitive planet filled with gigantic monsters along with the space hulk. At the beginning, we had over two hundred brothers, but now, a thousand years later, only ninety-nine are still alive..."
"What are your plans for the future?" Wu Wei asked.
"After the crash, we used the space hulk as a base to explore the planet. But after that, we encountered a lizard-like monster with green scales and wings. It was very powerful. Brother Hypa sacrificed himself to use a melta bomb to help us, who lacked heavy weapons, kill it."
"But that monster had a mate. After seeing its mate die, it launched an endless hunt for us. We were forced to abandon the space hulk and begin moving elsewhere."
Armidale motioned for Adjutant Abbott to produce their homemade map. He marked the location of the wrecked spaceship. "Not long ago, Father Leon also crashed on this planet. After confirming that Father Leon had certain repair and manufacturing capabilities, I planned to recapture the wrecked spaceship and search for anything on it that could help us return to space. But before that, we woke you up."
He put down the map and shook his head. "I just didn't expect our Legion to have such a dark secret... I originally thought we parted ways with the Legion simply because of a difference in philosophy, but it turns out our Gene Father is colluding with those enemies of humanity called demons. How absurd!"
"Then is our plan to return to space still necessary? Or do we need to make other plans?" Sergeant Arlo was not sure about the current situation.
"There can be no bright future under dark secrets, let alone a thousand years from now."
Hunter Fearless made this judgment and looked at Leon, the only person present who knew what was happening outside.
"I have revealed all my secrets, without reservation. What about you, Mechanicus? Can you tell us what the situation is like outside? Are the enemies of humanity still rampant in the stars? Is the human expedition led by the Emperor still continuing?"

Chapter 11: Clarifying the Present
A company lost during the Great Crusade? A company of loyalists from the rebellious Legion who had fled the Legion unwilling to participate in the Heresy? These were Leon's guesses when he discovered that this group of people were carrying standard equipment from the Great Crusade, but the reality was often more unexpected.
——No one would have thought that the Second Legion, which had been purged long ago and no one mentioned anymore, still had many remnants on this planet, and their company commanders even knew that the Primarch of the Second Legion had cooperated with Tzeentch before the Great Heresy!
I wanted to hear a secret, but I didn't expect it to be such a big secret. Li Ang couldn't help but stand up, and his action attracted the attention of everyone present.
"Are you going to tell us about the current situation?" asked Hunter Fearless.
Li Ang shook his head: "Xi, is it too late to quit now?"
The people around were silent, but when Leon saw Lieutenant Vigan reaching for the chainsaw sword at his waist, the answer was obvious.
Li Ang, who had no intention of actually quitting, sat down again and said, "Don't be nervous. It's been over a thousand years. Although your secrets are still secrets, they don't have much impact now."
After all, the great rebellion in which the Four Gods received the power and Horus killed his father to prove his faith had already occurred. It is really not convincing that the Primarch of the Second Legion and Tzeentch had colluded before, which we have only just discovered.
However, with this secret as a foundation, Leon finally understood why the Emperor wanted to purge the Second Legion, which he had never known before traveling through time.
Leon originally thought that the Four Gods' plan against the Emperor started with Horus, but now it seems that the shadow of Chaos had already been wreaking havoc in the Imperium long before the Four Gods initiated Horus to launch the Heresy.
As for Zerus and the Primordial Zerg...
"But before I tell you about the events following the Great Crusade, let me first confirm with you what your Primarch's name was."
"Abathur, that's what the Emperor calls him. What's wrong?"
Okay, let’s go together.
"It's okay." Li Ang, feeling somewhat accustomed to this, waved his hand. "This is an old friend whose name sounds very similar to mine... an old friend."
After playing Monster Hunter with the Gnolls, he is now playing StarCraft solo with the Bird-Headed People. It seems that Old Man Huang lived a pretty rich life 30,000 years ago.
Just want to mention the current situation to these veterans...
Although his earlier appearance of wanting to quit had given everyone a less optimistic view of the Galaxy's current situation, Leon still had to carefully organize his words to avoid involving more unknown secrets in his narration:
"The Great Crusade has ended, but it was not smooth sailing. Although humanity's territory has been greatly expanded and it has become the dominant force in the galaxy."
"But the threats humanity faces haven't diminished. Humanity's enemies have become even more cunning and formidable than during the Great Crusade. While they can't shake the Empire's supremacy, they could emerge from any corner of the galaxy at any moment to attack the Empire. The Empire's forces lack strong leadership, and due to its vast territory, they are unable to mobilize in a timely manner. Often, they can only be plundered by the xenos."
"The army lacks strong leadership? What about the Warmaster? What about the other Primarchs?"
Hunter Fearless asked, "I thought the Emperor would send them to guard the borders. Is it possible that the threats facing humanity are so numerous that the Primarch and his Legion have no time to deal with them?"
"The era of the Primarchs is over." Leon shook his head. "They have all vanished, not a single one remains."
Hunter Fearless didn't say anything, but Leon clearly felt him gasp. After a while, Fearless asked hesitantly, "Could it be that they were all...?"
"It is what they do to the Emperor, not what the Emperor does to them."
Leon quickly interrupted Fearless's wild thoughts: "At the end of the Great Crusade, some Primarchs, under the instigation of demons - those creatures of the Warp - launched a rebellion against the Emperor. They were collectively known as the Chaos Rebels. The Chaos Rebels headed straight for Terra, but after fifty-five days of fierce fighting on Terra, the rebellious Primarchs and demons were finally defeated by the loyal Primarchs and the army that was still loyal to the Emperor.
"The rebels abandoned the idea of destroying the Imperium and fled into the Warp with the Daemons, rarely appearing in the real universe. But the Emperor himself was also seriously injured. In his dying moments, he was placed on the Golden Throne of Terra, and the stasis field forever froze him in the moment of death. Although the Emperor himself still exists, he can no longer lead the Imperium."
"Never to lead this Imperium again?" Dreadnought's voice rose an octave, his shock evidently even greater than when he had previously suspected the Emperor had purged all the Primarchs. "Who started the rebellion? Who initiated it? Our Gene-Father?"
"It's Warmaster Horus."
"Oh, it's Horus after all... Wait, you just said Horus?"
Unlike the previous gasps, the scene now fell into a dead silence. Seeing that no one spoke for a long time, Leon could only confirm again: "Yes, it's Horus."
"The one who started the rebellion was the Primarch of the XVI Legion, the Emperor's firstborn son... Warmaster Horus?"
Fearless muttered to himself. As a Terran veteran, he had obviously been deployed and commanded under Horus before the Primarch's return. He might even have met Horus in person. "Why not our Gene-Father? Why Horus?"
Do you hate your father too much, or do you love Horus too much?
Leon really wanted to complain, but after hearing Hunter Wu Fearless's voice that was almost groaning in pain, he finally held back.
It was hard for him to imagine how much torment a stubborn veteran who had fought against the Great Demon of Tzeentch and was able to defeat him even when the latter exposed the dark secrets to shake his heart must be in to make such a sound.
Although Hunter Fearless had just predicted that they would never have a bright future, he probably didn't expect the future to be so bleak.
The fearless veteran was mentally prepared, but this was Warhammer 30K, and in terms of psychological quality, Leon could only say that he still needed to practice.
But there was always time for him to catch his breath, so Leon stopped politely and waited for Wuwei to recover.
But Amidel and his companions beside him were clearly dissatisfied with Leon's pause. Although they were equally shocked, they had never been led by the Emperor or Horus in person, so they were obviously not as deeply moved by the above news as the Hunter Dreadnought. Therefore, they continued to ask, "What's next? What happens after the Horus Heresy?"
"Let's wait a moment. I think your company commander is almost dead..."
Amidel agreed after seeing this and said, "Let's first talk about something we are more prepared for. If the rebellion happened because the demons bewitched the Primarch, then what about our Gene Father who has been colluding with the demons for a long time? Did he also participate in the rebellion?"
PS: I've seen some readers in the comments worry that the mix of elements can be too disjointed. I have a long-term vision for this, to bring it all together. Whether I can pull it off is hard to say, but I'm definitely taking on the challenge.
Anyway, if you think it is badly written, just point it out to me.
PS2: I found that Horus was beaten into the Primarch of the Thirteenth Legion. I apologized to the Regent and changed 10
Chapter 12: Debating the Truth
"No. Long before the Heresy, all records of the Second and Eleventh Legions were erased. No official historical records today acknowledge the existence of twenty Legions at the outset of the Great Crusade."
"Those who know more would think there were eighteen legions in total, while those who know less would even think that the Imperium only had the nine legions that remained loyal to the Emperor during the rebellion.
