But do you really intend to be the mother of these two Western monks?
Not to mention the two Western monks who were involved in the incident, even Su Su who was watching from a distance was shocked.
Upon hearing this, the Western monk immediately flew into a rage. He stood up from beside the campfire, clenched his fists, veins bulging, and it was obvious that he was extremely angry.
But seeing that the old woman who sold herself was hunched over and skinny, I was afraid that she would be killed with just one punch.
He could only hold back his anger and yelled, "You old woman, you don't know what's good for you. You humiliated us like this. If we hadn't seen that you were very old, we would have taught you a lesson. Why don't you get out of here now?"
"If you don't want to acknowledge me as your mother, just say so. Why get angry?"
The prostitute was still lingering outside the mountain temple, looking reluctant to leave. After a long while, she said, "Can you let me go into the temple to warm myself by the fire? It will be considered a great deed if I can get through this night."
"roll!"
The Western monks in the mountain temple glared angrily.
"Alas, it's still chilly in spring, and my clothes are thin. I'm afraid I won't be able to survive tonight. Are you two really going to watch me die without helping me?"
The old woman sighed.
"Snapped!"
Another Western monk pulled out a piece of wood that was burning in the bonfire and threw it in front of the old woman. "It is inconvenient for us outsiders to stay here. Please go to the town at the foot of the mountain."
Seeing this, the old woman raised her cloudy eyes and stared at the Western monk who threw the firewood from afar for a few seconds. Then she picked up the burning firewood in front of her, treading tremblingly on the muddy mountain road, and walked towards Guangping Township at the foot of the mountain.
Su Su was afraid that the old woman who had fled to Guobei County would accidentally fall and die while walking in the mountains at night, causing a murder case in the peaceful Guobei County, so he had to follow the old woman and escort her down the mountain safely.
As the City God of Guobei County, she also serves as the land god of three townships and one town. It is her job to protect passers-by in her jurisdiction.
But the further he walked, the more Su Su felt that something was wrong.
The skinny old woman walked unsteadily, as if she would fall to the ground at any time, but she managed to reach the foot of the mountain safely. Not only did she not slip, she did not even step into the dirty puddles that were difficult to distinguish in the deep night.
This can't be explained by just good luck.
There must be a demon in the abnormal situation.
There is definitely something wrong with this old woman who intends to sell her body.
Chapter 106 Guanyin Bodhisattva
After spending so much time with Chang'e, the acting queen, she could see that this old woman was clearly a sacred figure in disguise.
Her real purpose of wandering outside the mountain temple for a long time was not to sell herself to the two Western monks. Therefore, her difficult act of making the two Western monks recognize her as their mother under the pretext of selling herself seemed more like some kind of temporary test.
For the two Western monks, if they could really follow what the old woman said, they would respectfully acknowledge her as their mother and fulfill their obligation to support her.
This obviously created an opportunity to show her a favor.
As long as you are influenced by cause and effect, your future acts of repaying your gratitude will seem natural.
Just like Chang'e who had cheated two gold bars from him in the City God Temple as a betrothal gift, and then returned with a marriage contract.
This is a common operation in Liao Zhai stories.
Take the article "Water Chestnut" in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio for example. The mother of Hu Dacheng, a Chu man, had always believed in Buddhism. When she saw that Hu Dacheng had to pass by the Guanyin Temple on his way to the private school he attended, she told Hu Dacheng to go into the temple and kowtow devoutly every time he passed by it.
Later, Hu Dacheng secretly married Jiao Huagong's daughter Lingjiao in the Guanyin Temple and decided to spend the rest of his life together.
But not long after, Hu Dacheng's aunt passed away. Because his uncle was old and childless, he had to go to Hubei to attend the funeral. However, he encountered war and chaos, and the rebels occupied Hunan, which caused him to lose contact with his family and live in fear all day long.
I don’t know how much time passed like this.
Hu Dacheng suddenly met an old woman who had no way out because of the war and could only sell herself in public. When others asked about the price, the old woman said that she did not want to be a slave, and even more so did not want to marry as a wife or concubine. If anyone was willing to recognize her as a mother, she would go with him.
When Hu Dacheng saw that the old woman looked somewhat like his mother, he was touched and saddened, so he invited the old woman to go home with him and provide for her as his own mother.
Just as Hu Dacheng began to support the old woman as if she were his own mother, the old woman prepared all the items needed for his marriage. She then found Lingjiao, who had been displaced after the war, and let Hu Dacheng and Lingjiao get married. That night, Hu Dacheng's mother, who had been hiding in the mountains to avoid the disaster, was also found by the old woman to reunite with him.
Afterwards, Hu Dacheng and others realized that the old woman was actually the incarnation of Guanyin Bodhisattva.
Thinking of this, Su Su suddenly came to his senses.
"This old woman who is going to be the mother of two Western monks, could she be the Bodhisattva Guanyin?"
It was only a few days ago when she met two monks from the Western Regions that she began to have some desire to find out more about Guanyin Bodhisattva, but the other party came directly to Guobei County. She couldn't help feeling a chill in her spine.
In order to avoid attracting the attention of the old woman who looked like Guanyin Bodhisattva, Su Su immediately hid his figure and prepared to turn around and leave from the foot of the mountain.
"The little girl escorted me all the way down the mountain. Could it be that you are willing to recognize me as your mother and take me home to support you?"
Suddenly, an old voice came from behind, with a kind tone that made people feel like spring breeze.
When Su Su suddenly heard the voice, his scalp went numb.
Those two foreign monks from the Western Regions don't want to acknowledge you as their mother, and now you're setting your sights on me, right?
She turned around quickly and saw that the old woman who was originally walking tremblingly towards Guangping Township had now stood behind her. The wrinkles on her face, which were mixed with the look of exhaustion, were smoothed out, and her hunched body gradually straightened up. She had kind eyes and a kind temperament, and she had a compassionate temperament.
"Bodhisattva?"
Su Su asked tentatively.
The other party neither admitted nor denied it, but said: "All phenomena are the result of the combination of causes and conditions. They arise when the conditions arise and cease to exist when the conditions cease. It is nothing more than this. Whoever the little girl sees me to be, that is who I am."
"I think you look like a 1.75 meter tall girl, with a curvy figure..."
As soon as the thought came to his mind, he saw with his own eyes that the kind-looking old woman in front of him had become younger and her height had suddenly increased. Her clothes were ragged, but her graceful figure could not be concealed. The holy and compassionate look between her eyebrows did not give people the urge to blaspheme.
"No, are you serious?"
Su Su was extremely shocked. He stopped thinking about it and explained hurriedly, "Avalokitesvara, I didn't mean to offend you."
"What you see in front of you is what you think in your heart. How can it be an offense?" the other party said calmly.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has thirty-three bodies in the human world, with many changes. What ordinary people think of in their hearts is the Dharma body of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva that they see before their eyes.
"Sure enough, the Guanyin Bodhisattva before my eyes is a bodhisattva who has truly achieved enlightenment through cultivation, rather than a deity born from a clay statue due to the gathering of human hearts."
Su Su understood the meaning of Guanyin Bodhisattva's words and thought to himself.
At the same time, he asked, "Did the Bodhisattva come here to convert those two Western monks?"
"Exactly."
The woman who was the incarnation of Guanyin replied.
"They drove the Bodhisattva away. So the Buddha Dharma that we came from all over the Western Regions to seek is cut off?"
Su Su asked again.
"The arising and cessation of fate, the gathering and separation of fate, are all cause and effect."
The woman shook her head slightly and continued, "If Buddha doesn't save people, people will save themselves, just like a bottomless boat sailing through a maze. The word "Buddhism" is nothing more than making people's hearts pure. If their thoughts are clear, all troubles will disappear, and everyone can become a Buddha. They have gone through hardships and dangers, and their sincerity can move mountains and open up new paths. I will open a path for them. It is up to them to walk or not. How can their Buddhism be cut off if they don't follow my path?"
"When this cause and effect ends, there will be another cause and effect."
"That being said, how can you tell me that you want to be your mother as soon as you meet me to test me?"
Su Su couldn't help but complain in his heart.
After these two Western monks traveled thousands of miles to the Central Plains, they climbed Mount Wutai and Mount Tai successively. It is unknown what happened along the way, but judging from the fact that they saw Guanyin without realizing it and instead drove Guanyin Bodhisattva away, we know that they most likely missed a lot of opportunities.
"Observe yourself, observe yourself, there is no one, and there is no me."
The woman seemed to see through Su Su's thoughts and smiled softly, "If you can't see yourself clearly, how can you see others clearly? I have laid the road before them, but they don't want to walk. Can I force them to walk?"
Buddhism teaches that everything is subject to karma. When karma arises, everything comes into being; when karma ceases, everything disappears.
The woman who was the incarnation of Guanyin had revealed many flaws in front of the two Western monks, but it was a pity that they were blinded by anger. Even if they refused to acknowledge her as their mother on the spot, if they had listened and let her into the mountain temple to warm themselves by the fire and survive the night, it would have been a meritorious reminder and the result would have been very different.
However, once you miss it, you miss it, there will never be a second chance.
"I'm leaving."
Without giving Su Su a chance to explain, the woman said to herself, "You are quite interesting, little girl. I will remember your kindness in escorting you tonight. If you are in trouble in the future, just call out my Dharma name three times and the disaster will be eliminated."
Done.
The woman's figure disappeared from Su Su's sight, as if she had never existed.
Chapter 107 Reporting
There is no need to speak of the abilities of Guanyin Bodhisattva. In many legends in the market, she always plays the role of saving the situation at critical moments and playing the role of a stabilizing force.
In Buddhism, Guanyin Bodhisattva is considered to be a compassionate Bodhisattva. As long as all sentient beings in distress recite his name, that is, Namo Greatly Compassionate and Merciful Guanyin Bodhisattva, he will come to save and liberate the believers.
In the stories of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, those who are saved by Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva are often devout believers.
"The opportunity of those two Western monks was sent to me by them by accident."
Su Su turned around and looked far away at the mountain temple on the hillside where he could vaguely see a flicker of fire. He didn't know what expression to use in response.
The Buddhist opportunity that was delivered to her door was kicked away by two Western monks, and instead benefited her as a passing bystander.
After inspecting Guobei County in a subtle mood, they returned to the City God Temple. Judge Lu and the Five Cities Patrol Envoy Xue stayed obediently in the temple, not daring to make any rash moves. Currently, they were sitting and discussing with Judge Wen, talking about the arrangements to deal with Lord Heishan.
But in Su Su's eyes, it was easy to see through their real intention, which was not to drink, but to take the opportunity to get some details about themselves from Judge Wen indirectly.
"All in all, I have been in office as the City God of Guobei County for less than a month, and I have been away from home for most of that time. I am afraid that you two will only be working in vain."
Too lazy to play along with them, Su Su didn't even show up, but walked straight to the small courtyard inside the land temple.
"You vixen, are you out flirting with other girls again?"
As soon as she entered the courtyard, Chang'e, who had stopped sewing her wedding dress to take a rest, cast a fixed gaze at her.
She saw through it at a glance that Su Su had had contact with other people outside.
"You can see this?" Su Su was extremely surprised.
He lowered his head and looked at his clothes.
She was still wearing the same green and yellow chest-length skirt, with a green bamboo fan tucked into her sleeve.
His appearance and demeanor were neat and tidy, with no noticeable changes.
She just spoke a few words to Guanyin Bodhisattva face to face, without even any physical contact. I really don't know how Chang'e saw the problem.
"You have a slightly sweet and bitter smell. I smelled it as soon as I entered the room. Tell me the truth. Who did you mess with outside?"
Chang'e frowned slightly, covered her nose lightly, and pretended to be disgusted.
Needless to say, Su Su also knew where the slightly sweet and bitter smell in Chang'e's mouth came from. She turned her head and raised her hand to smell herself. Apart from the faint fragrance that was almost imperceptible, there was no other strange smell.
It seems that this so-called slightly sweet and bitter smell is roughly the same as the three life-saving hairs that Guanyin Bodhisattva gave to Monkey King in "Journey to the West". They are all things that can help people escape danger in critical moments.
"Don't talk nonsense. I just met Guanyin Bodhisattva from the South China Sea on my way to inspect Guobei County." Su Su said seriously.
Then, before Chang'e asked further questions, he told her the truth about how he had met two Western monks in Guobei County a few days ago, and how he had seen these two Western monks kick away the great Buddhist opportunity when he was patrolling tonight.
The other party showed an expression of understanding and nodded slightly.
"So you ran into someone from the Buddhist sect. No wonder you are so miserable. Be careful that you are converted to become a nun."
But seeing Su Su's face full of the look of having taken advantage, Chang'e made a sarcastic remark.
"If I become a monk, you will have to live a widow's life." Su Su immediately retorted.
Unexpectedly, the other party did not show any anger at all. Instead, he looked at Su Su for a long time with a fiery gaze.
Then she said: "I will be alone in my empty room, I beg the female Bodhisattva to give me some alms to relieve my resentment."
"hiss......"
Although it wasn't the first time that he was teased, such blunt words made Su Su gasp and look at the other person helplessly: "If you let others hear this, you'll probably be called a hooligan."
"You and I are already engaged, so even if you say something a little exaggerated, it is only natural. People like you who leave your wife alone at home will be criticized."
When they disagreed, they proposed marriage.
But strictly speaking, there is not much to fault with what Chang'e said.
After all, according to current customs, both parties have already had a reasonable and legal marriage relationship from the day they enter into the marriage contract, and the process of fulfilling the marriage contract and getting married is just an optional ceremony.
"What you said makes sense, but I am speechless."
Facing Chang'e's relentless pressure, Su Fu collapsed at the first sign of defeat. He thought of avoiding the real situation and confusing the other party to make her complacent. So he was too lazy to engage in meaningless arguments and walked to the soft couch in the bedroom and lay down with an attitude of "I can't defeat you, but I can't escape from you either".
Chang'e picked up the needle and thread and began to sew her wedding dress.
It was late at night, and ordinary people had already fallen asleep, but it was the peak period when ghosts and the underworld were active. After Su Su overslept during the day, he was not very sleepy at night. He just felt too lazy to move because nothing happened.
