Infinite Hunter
Page 101
Cheng Yijiu followed Wang Anren to the excavation site. "This is our excavation plan for this year. After we peeled back a layer, the first thing we found was a partial vertebra—yes, a Tyrannosaurus, but very large, comparable to the North American T. rex," he pointed out proudly. Before him was a curved spine on the ground, and some structures that might have been ribs.
"The posture seems to be arched, right? If the pelvis and skull are still there, they should be at the bottom?" Cheng Yijiu said, and the other party raised his thumbs up. "You are indeed an expert. The posture is indeed like this. If we are lucky, I think we will obtain a fossil of Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus that may be close to 70% complete." Cheng Yijiu saw the ground-penetrating radar on the side. These guys must have used this thing to explore.
There was a tent set up on top, and his two guys had already started working with their cameras. They looked up, said hello, and continued filming.
The fossil cleaning work was quite fast. This major discovery attracted considerable attention. There were actually more than ten cattle and horses responsible for cleaning the fossils on the site. In just two days, most of the fossils, especially the torso and skull parts, had been cleaned out.
Chapter 18
Looking at the cleaned fossil surface, the crystal-like vertebra in Cheng Yijiu's pocket didn't move at all. "I think this is probably not my target anymore," the hunter sighed. He carefully examined the fossil structure exposed in the rock. This Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus was actually fragmented, but luckily, the fragments were distributed in a small area.
"It should be the geological changes and movements that caused the original skeleton to separate." After 70 million years of geological movement, it only moved a little bit. The farthest hind leg is about six meters away from the torso, and this leg itself occupies more than ten meters in length - the thigh, calf and claws are all separated.
Cheng Yijiu looked at the small fragment of bone that had just emerged from the stone surface with a brush. Even he could tell it was just a small section of the side of the skull. "Just looking at the size, it must be quite large. I think it's not less than Su's. The completeness of the fossil may even hold a surprise." The entire excavation was estimated to take over a year. Separating the fossil from the rock was a delicate task.
This mission and this world, however, presented no limitations or obstacles to Cheng Yijiu. If anything, it was simply beyond the reach of Apollo's divine power. "This place can be my second home," Cheng Yijiu understood, as he also had a complete background and income here.
This task might really take several years. Fortunately, the worlds do not count the passage of time between each other, and Cheng Yijiu's time seems to be fixed. He does not show any signs of aging.
This documentary will take some time to film, but we already know what the fossil will look like when it's separated. Thanks to advanced technology, scanning its internal structure is now very simple. Therefore, in computer animation, the fossil can already be simulated and mounted, and even animated images can be produced, not to mention restored images.
"It's definitely different from the Tyrannosaurus Rex species. Although it hasn't been fully unearthed yet, its body length is estimated to be around 12 meters, and the fossil is estimated to be over 80% complete. It's likely the most complete theropod dinosaur ever. This creature's spine and ribs are almost intact, and the skull is probably as well. Even the bones of the limbs may only be missing a few small parts so far..."
Cheng Yijiu was a semi-expert, and now he was at a studio in the imperial capital, where Xiao Ouyang, a professional in this field, had already been modeling the skull in software. This was the initial template, with a complete side profile already excised. The rest of the body was directly based on the Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. "The skull is quite different. The brow ridges are much more developed than those of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and there seem to be traces above the nasal bones—does this creature have short, nail-like horns on its nasal bones?"
However, the marks are minor, and the short horns are likely decorative, measuring no more than ten centimeters. The well-developed brow ridges, with protruding structures in front and behind the eye sockets, make it unmistakable that it's a Tyrannosaurus Rex. From the front, the skull resembles that of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, with a narrow, long lower jaw and staggered upper and lower jaws, similarly allowing for stereoscopic vision.
"I hope it can become a dinosaur star," Cheng Yijiu said to the others in the studio. "Shandong's dinosaur kingdom is no less impressive than those famous groups in North America. It may even be the world's largest dinosaur group from the Late Cretaceous. There are giant Tyrannosaurus species, the largest duck-billed dinosaurs, and even a few large ceratopsians in China. Probably the only thing missing is a medium-to-large dromaeosaur."
The two bones were still, so it looked like they were doing fine. Cheng Yijiu had been traveling back and forth between the fossil excavation site and the Imperial Capital Studio. He'd discovered new Ceratopsian fossils beneath the Tyrannosaurus fossils, and possibly even a few sauropod skeletons of the Zhucheng Titanosaur. So the documentary was expanded, likely to be three parts, and of course, some investment from the local government had been secured.
"Isn't there only one type of Centrosaurus, the Sinoceratops? Is this another big find?" Cheng Yijiu said to the excited Old Wang. The paleontologists who came here now are not just yellow-skinned, there are even paleontologists from the United States and Japan, and they also came here for the new discovery of the Zhucheng dinosaur group.
Because of the discovery of this Tyrannosaurus, rumors have been circulating that it's likely over 80% complete. And now, a new large, advanced ceratopsian has been discovered outside of North America—a topic ripe for publication. So far, only two large ceratopsians have been unearthed outside of North America, including this recent discovery, in China. This time, the skull is a fragmented one, missing the lower jaw. Scans and computer reconstructions reveal that the skull is missing approximately one-third of the frill, but otherwise appears quite complete.
"So this thing has complete, well-developed eyebrows? What's it going to be called this time? Is it going to be called the Chinese Triceratops?" Cheng Yijiu nudged Lao Wang. "It hasn't been decided yet," the guy said happily. "Maybe my name will be in the list! What do you think? If you find anything else, would you like to add one too?"
Cheng Yijiu nodded and said, "Okay, if you find any more carnivorous dinosaurs, count me in and add my name to the species name, so that I can become famous all over the world."
Several large pieces of Tyrannosaurus fossils have been completely peeled off and sent to the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology for fine fossil peeling and trimming. This is done by slowly grinding with a grinding pen. The large pieces outside can be ground with an angle grinder, but when it comes to the bone fossils, you have to do it slowly.
Cheng Yijiu almost forgot about the mission - he contacted Nathan, and he was not dead. Elizabeth was fired and now works as a technical director in another company. There is still some confusion between the two because Nathan also went to work as a so-called security director and experimental biological management director - mainly animal training.
This guy seemed to want to take Cheng Yijiu to Europe to study biology again, saying that there was a project going on in Europe, which seemed to be about cave bears or something. Cheng Yijiu refused outright, saying that he was busy making a documentary about fossil excavations and had no time to deal with this crappy cave bear.
This fossil site has become the world's number one hotspot for dinosaur excavations. The fossil belt covers an area of about 20,000 square meters, with layers upon layers. After uncovering the thick mud layer and peeling off the several-meter-thick sedimentary rock layer, a large number of very well-preserved Late Cretaceous fossils have emerged.
Cheng Yijiu was also busy having the photographer record a large amount of original video footage. This documentary could probably become a big one, and it wasn't impossible that it could even be used as material for a new generation remake of Jurassic Park. However, his two bones hadn't moved at all...
Chapter 19
This exposed geological layer, rich in dinosaurs, may be the richest fossil source of the Maastrichtian Stage, boasting even more dinosaur species than the Hell Creek Formation. So far, a year after returning to China to join this expedition, Cheng Yijiu has confirmed two new ankylosaurs, a new large ceratopsian, and possibly four or five smaller, bird-like dinosaurs.
Of course, there have been many fossils of hadrosaurs, ceratopsians and ankylosaurs that have been confirmed in the past. This time, more than one fossil of the newly discovered Chinese Triceratops Wang species or Chinese King Ceratops has been discovered. The skull of the holotype specimen is about the same size as Triceratops, just like the Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus is about the same size as Tyrannosaurus Rex. This skull also belongs to an individual dinosaur about 7 meters long.
However, another femur fragment from a Chinese ceratosaurus was found to be incorrect. Calculations indicate that this bone belonged to a large Chinese ceratosaurus, nearly ten meters long, most likely a ceratosaurus, which would have been the largest ceratosaurus in the world. Zhucheng, Shandong, is the home of the largest dinosaurs—except for the largest sauropods, the largest hadrosaurs and the largest ceratopsians have all been found.
Of course, relatively complete ankylosaur fossils have also been discovered, including a skull. This year was a major year for paleontology, with excavations in Zhucheng, Shandong, yielding fruitful results, once again confirming China's position as a leading dinosaur country. However, no large and ferocious velociraptors have been found.
So, of course, Cheng Yijiu's name didn't make the list. His income for the year was only the sum Elizabeth gave him, but it was enough—over a million dollars, more than enough to get by for a year. He didn't have a luxurious lifestyle, and the studio's previous documentaries had been quite profitable. This time, with the help of a promotional grant from the local government, he had no pressure to complete the entire project.
The Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus fossil has been nearly completely cleaned, and its completeness is a staggering 88 percent. Only a portion of the tail vertebrae and abdominal ribs are missing, and even the bones of its two nearly useless forelimbs are intact. This was a massive carnivorous dinosaur, twelve meters long, comparable to the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils.
So this guy became a popular character. When the new Jurassic series was rebooted, the director and the production company directly announced that they would incorporate the latest fossil discoveries and new dinosaurs into the film.
Cheng Yijiu heaved a sigh of relief. He probably wouldn't be stabbed in the face by someone digging up a fossil and then using it to hit him. He was chuckling inwardly at his home, looking at a crude but massive pipe-like firearm. He'd done everything he could think of—if repeated use wasn't an issue, and he only considered firing a single shot, the requirements for the pipe could be reduced to a certain level.
This whale-killing gun was a special device Cheng Yijiu had built for his future. It had a 20mm caliber, a tripod mount, and a swivel and tilt mechanism. This bolt-action gun fired the 20mm rounds Cheng Yijiu had managed to acquire, using a semi-piercing incendiary explosive warhead. It was more like a small cannon, aimed through a periscope-like mirror and fired with a simple side-spring trigger, eliminating the need for human recoil.
It only fires one round anyway; the second round might explode—after all, it's not a true 20mm barrel. But the accuracy of the first round is absolutely guaranteed. If we really had to deal with resurrected "dinosaurs," considering they lack special abilities like immunity to modern firearms, a single round would be enough to wipe out every creature that ever existed.
"The problem is that this thing is not easy to move, so we have to set a trap and ambush it. We must confirm the target's moving route in order to accurately kill it. The distance should not be too far. After all, the weapon I made by hand does not have such high accuracy. It is best to complete the shooting within 200 meters." Cheng Yijiu thought.
His weapon was essentially devoid of components, consisting of a barrel, a frame, a trigger mechanism, and a horizontal periscope-like sight. The locking mechanism was also sturdy, ensuring the single shot would be fired successfully. The lack of components made it easy to carry, but the weight wasn't exactly light; sandbags were even needed to hold down the frame and cushion the impact.
This excavation uncovered a fossilized surface containing at least twenty dinosaurs, including fragments of bones. The documentary about this excavation has already entered the special effects animation stage. By utilizing advanced AI rendering technology, the production time and cost of the special effects and textures have been significantly reduced.
Cheng Yijiu's special effects team wasn't the most impressive, just above average. They couldn't compare to the special effects company working on the upcoming Jurassic films. But it was still pretty good. Cheng Yijiu felt only a hint of unreality when watching the dinosaurs running in the image. He figured they'd be completely lifelike once the light-tracing and compositing were complete.
"After all, there is still a gap between this and the wildlife documentaries shot in person." Cheng Yijiu sighed, and he ran to the excavation site again, "Hey? There is a tooth fossil with half of it exposed here." Cheng Yijiu looked around and saw a black stone. No matter how he looked at it, it was a tooth.
Old Wang heard it, and so did an American who was discussing the matter with him. The two of them came over and squatted with Cheng Yijiu, looking at the black stone point sticking out from the rock. "This thing should be a Tyrannosaurus tooth, a banana tooth." Cheng Yijiu peeled off the stone next to him with his hands, also using a small cross screwdriver.
The two recognized it immediately. "It's indeed a Tyrannosaurus tooth. The root isn't showing, but the upper part looks quite intact." Old Wang was also very happy. As Cheng Yijiu broke and peeled off more of the rock, his joy turned to fear. "Isn't that right? This tooth seems too big?"
Even before the root was peeled away, the exposed tooth grew larger and larger as it was cleaned. When Cheng Yijiu finally managed to reveal a portion of the root from the side, the thing was almost thirty centimeters long, half the length of the longest Tyrannosaurus tooth and comparable to that of a Leviathan whale. Old Wang couldn't wait to grab a small electric drill and began peeling away the surrounding bedrock, hoping to get his hands on the tooth and study it as soon as possible. The American next to him also took out his phone and frantically took pictures. He even posted a lot of pictures online...
Chapter 20
This is the largest carnivorous dinosaur tooth ever found, almost twice as long as a Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth. This suggests that at least one carnivorous dinosaur was likely at least one-third larger than a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The key point is that this creature's teeth aren't triangular cutting teeth like those of a Carcharodontosaurus; instead, they have typical, conical, piercing teeth.
The back end of the tooth had a distinct steak-knife-like cutting surface, not a completely conical shape. The two paleontologists immediately recognized it as a tyrannosaurid tooth. "The largest carnivorous dinosaur may be changing hands, no longer Tyrannosaurus Rex," they declared. Almost half an hour after the tooth's discovery, a quick-witted online media outlet had already published the news.
It’s because that American has quite a few followers on X.
Moreover, news about this king of carnivorous dinosaurs has always been the hottest news.
Old Wang also glanced at Cheng Yijiu and said, "Old Cheng, your name will probably be on the list soon. How about Cheng Long? Hahahaha." Cheng Yijiu held the tooth fossil, his expression uncertain - the bone in his pocket was getting hot...
"Damn it!" Cheng Yijiu cursed inwardly. "I have a feeling there might be a big surprise down here." He said to Lao Wang and the others, then chiseled down a few times with the screwdriver in his hand, and the tip of another tooth emerged. Lao Wang and the American squatted on the rock section and reached out to brush away the gravel. "Oh, shit! Hurry and bring that over!"
The ground-penetrating radar looked a lot like a minesweeper. It began to gently vibrate the ground. Soon, a layered image appeared on the screen, and a group of people leaned in to interpret it. "This fossil is huge, this area..." Old Wang looked up. "All the soil within fifteen meters of here needs to be peeled away to expose the underlying rock layer."
The soil is over ten meters thick, a significant undertaking. The key is that the rock here runs directly down a fault line, so the soil is quite thick. There are also many fossils underneath, but the density is not as high as in the area where the most complete Chinese Tyrannosaurus fossils were previously discovered.
The bones in Cheng Yijiu's pockets were burning with heat, so he made a random excuse and got in the car, ready to go to the hotel in the county town to rest. On the way, he pulled out the two jade-like bones from his pocket and was not surprised to find that they were actually glowing. "Oh, damn, don't animate them!" He really didn't want to see another mechanical monster in China. If this thing appeared in China, there would be no way to hide it.
It's not like the United States is so sparsely populated. If a company can cover up its misdeeds in Montana, it can simply do it. The so-called federal government is really just that. An all-knowing and all-powerful federal government only exists in Hollywood movies, and it's often played as a villain.
However, in China, once a similar situation occurs, it is almost impossible for the government not to know about it, because the mechanical monster will cause too much noise.
The complete fossil specimen of the Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus has been excised from the rock and scanned and modeled. In the studio's animation, the original Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton has been replaced with the new Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus. "It doesn't really matter whether it's replaced or not, as the two Tyrannosaurus rex have very little structural difference."
Indeed, in terms of basic body shape and coelom, the two are comparable, with only slight differences in the proportions of the leg bones and upper limbs. The biggest difference is in the skull. After the two have been reconstructed, it's difficult to tell them apart by looking at their bodies, but their heads are clearly distinguishable. The Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus from China is more ornate, with more "ornaments" on its skull.
Finally, in terms of high-end combat power, China still surpasses the United States... Even if the tyrant dinosaurs cancel each other out, the larger Chinese Neoceratops and the largest Chinese hadrosaurus that has been discovered have crushed their North American counterparts. The Chinese Neoanthosaurus, whose fossils are still incomplete and are being named, is almost the largest ankylosaur.
Zhucheng, Shandong is truly a magical dinosaur kingdom, no less impressive than the Hell Creek Formation.
Furthermore, there were the massive dinosaur teeth that had just been discovered, indicating the presence of a massive, possibly entirely new species of Tyrannosaurus, potentially the new king of the carnivorous dinosaurs. Cheng Yijiu knew his troubles were imminent, and he needed to start thinking of a solution. He had already found a 20mm elephant hunting rifle, and now he needed to get some explosives and set a trap.
In short, a single artillery shell wouldn't be enough to deal with a monster like this; you'd need a hundred kilograms of explosives. As long as the monster wasn't immune to the regular forces of modern firearms, it would definitely be killed. Of course, if it were mechanized, that would be another matter.
"Not really, it shouldn't be like that." Cheng Yijiu thought about it, and his curiosity was aroused. "What could this thing be? An extra-large Tyrannosaurus Rex? A Chinese Supertyrannosaurus Cheng species? In any case, it can't be called Jackie Chan." He played with the first huge tooth that Lao Wang gave him.
The documentary is almost finished. It's about the findings of this excavation, detailing the enormous dinosaurs that lived and battled here 65 million years ago. "If you have the money, documentaries these days are just as good as those produced by Discovery and the BBC, and they're even superior. And they're even better than similar documentaries in smaller books, much better."
This is undeniable. China and the United States are the world's two leading superpowers in advanced applications like computer software, the internet, and AI. In this area, the top 50 companies are either Chinese or American, with Europe, Japan, and South Korea completely out of the picture. Therefore, when it comes to computer special effects animation, European, Japanese, and Korean companies are naturally no longer as advanced as those in China and the United States.
This is why Cheng Yijiu, a studio, has already surpassed Japanese TV, film and animation companies in special effects production capabilities. The strongest among them are not in this area, but in games. It's a pity that in the past decade or so, Japan has been left far behind by the Americans in terms of game graphics and CG, and then left far behind by Chinese game companies in the past few years...
This film would most likely be broadcast on satellite TV, but it could also be sold to online video companies, which would offer a high price, enough to make the studio a good profit. However, the commercial negotiations for this aspect were not handled by Cheng Yijiu, but by one of the studio's partners. This studio was originally a gathering of enthusiasts to make extra money, and the partner in charge of the commercial negotiations was similar.
"I think you guys are pretty quick. You've already transported away tens of thousands of cubic meters of soil?" Cheng Yijiu arrived at the scene again and said as he looked at the rock layer exposed on the ground in front of him.
Chapter 21
The documentary received very good responses after it was released. The Chinese were able to produce such a realistic, fluent and well-researched paleontology science film. The film was released on multiple streaming apps, which directly made the Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus in China, a giant beast of the same level as Tyrannosaurus Rex, popular. The fact that Zhucheng, Shandong is a dinosaur park has also become deeply rooted in people's minds.
Therefore, the local government decided to do something big. In addition to building semi-permanent viewing/excavation sheds at various fossil sites, the area of the original dinosaur museum was expanded to attract tourists of all ages who love dinosaurs. The government strived to build Zhucheng into a world-famous dinosaur museum city, and of course an authoritative place for studying Late Cretaceous dinosaurs.
It's unlikely that the original fossils remain in Zhucheng, Shandong. They've likely been taken to either the National Museum of Vertebrate Paleontology or the Shanghai Museum. They're supposedly borrowing them, but in reality, like borrowing from Jingzhou, they're never returned. The only fossils left are replicas, mounted and displayed.
"What a complete and magnificent creature." Old Wang exclaimed, looking at the assembled Chinese Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus in front of him. His gaze only lingered on a few places, full of regret.
Even a monster that big, on the same level as Tyrannosaurus Rex, could not compare to the tooth unearthed at the edge of the fossil zone, even if its largest tooth was not as big as the one unearthed at the edge of the fossil zone.
The atmosphere at the site where the teeth had been discovered was lively. Everyone was delighted to have found four large, sharp teeth. If they were right, the skull should be underneath. Cheng Yijiu twirled the bone in his pocket. He was lucky; it hadn't activated like it had in the past, causing such intractable problems.
"It can't be done before the resurgence, and it has to be done after the resurgence. It's really weird." Cheng Yijiu was secretly cursing the task for being too rigid, but to be honest, he really didn't dare to blow up the fossil now - if he really did it, he would have to wait until the chrysanthemums bloom.
Lifting back a layer of rock revealed a remarkably complete hadrosaur skull—truly enormous, almost five feet long, and remarkably complete. Everyone was both delighted and disappointed. They were delighted that they had likely discovered another hadrosaur—this one had a unique crest-like structure on its head, something they had never seen before, and undoubtedly broke the record for the largest hadrosaur.
"Interesting, it's a hadrosaurus? I can breathe a sigh of relief now." Cheng Yijiu chuckled inwardly. What was a hadrosaurus? Just meat. Old Wang came over at this time. "Here, I promised you. I've registered it." He pointed to a string of foreign words on the catalog. "Chinese Imperial Tyrannosaurus, the Latin name Imperatrix is for you. Cheng's Imperial Tyrannosaurus—the emperor carnivorous lizard."
"The emperor of carnivorous lizards from China, not bad." Cheng Yijiu thought naming a dinosaur based on its fossil teeth was perfectly normal. "I think it's currently classified as Imperial Tyrannosaurus—yes, a separate genus—Tyrannosauroidea, Tyrannosaurinae, Imperial Tyrannosaurus," Old Wang said, and Cheng Yijiu was now brimming with pride.
Cheng Yijiu leaned over to examine the hadrosaur fossil, his hands still clutching the two bones in his pockets. As he moved to a certain spot, he noticed the bones were getting hotter. As he continued to move, they began to cool. So, Cheng Yijiu stood in a daze, more than two meters to the left of the exposed hadrosaur skull—there was nothing here but stone.
Cheng Yijiu knew very well that his real target was under the stone, and he only needed to peel off a part of it...
Cheng Yijiu began to chip away at the rock with a chisel. Chunks of stone fell away until he saw a portion of the black mandible and the sharp teeth on it... Cheng Yijiu stood up straight, let out a long breath, and said to Lao Wang, who was directing the cleaning of the huge duck-billed dragon skull, in a low voice, "Hey, I'm going to be rich now. Come over and take a look."
Old Wang took one look and was stunned. "The Chinese Tyrannosaurus Rex, Cheng's species, is right here," Cheng Yijiu said. "Oh, Three Pure Ones!" Old Wang insisted he wouldn't say God. The Chinese should be calling the Three Pure Ones. The rear end of the mandible before him was intact, probably only one-third of it, but it was already nearly a meter long. This carnivorous dinosaur was incredibly large.
Seeing Lao Wang was stunned, some people came over to see him. The American also ran over. This guy was shouting to God and shaking Cheng Yijiu's shoulders, "Man, a giant carnivorous dinosaur! Giant! Holy shit! How can there be such a monster!" Everyone who saw the fossil was stunned. Lao Wang only said, "Don't spread it out yet!"
He looked at Cheng Yijiu, his eyes filled with pain, "How come you got it?"
The cattle and horses, receiving instructions, and even the foreign cattle and horses who had volunteered, knelt there, using small metal awls and brushes to clean the interface between the fossil and the rock, preparing to remove the fossil bit by bit. Everyone had a feeling that this exposed jaw was likely a complete jawbone, possibly even both sides, which would be very rare.
The exposed rear tooth is smaller, but its length, excluding the root, is about ten centimeters. It resembles a previously described tooth of Tyrannosaurus rex. This suggests that this is a very likely holotype specimen of Tyrannosaurus rex. It's even possible that the tooth belonged to this enormous carnivorous dinosaur.
The exposed mandible is so large, it could be twice as long as that of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Unfortunately, we haven't seen the skull yet, so we can't tell if this is the case yet.
Cheng Yijiu had a photographer documenting the situation, and he himself stayed close, feeling the warmth radiating from his pocket. Ever since the jawbone was unearthed, Cheng Yijiu had found some heat-insulating cloth to wrap the two small bones. If they were taken out, the two bones would likely be as bright as a ten-watt lightbulb.
Several people were kneeling and lying on the fossil, cleaning it up quickly. More than half of the jawbone had been cleared by nightfall. "Look at these teeth arranged so beautifully and powerfully!" Lao Wang took out a tape measure and measured. "It's only halfway through, and it's already 1.44 meters long. And look at the width! This jawbone is exceptionally strong for a Tyrannosaurus. No Tyrannosaurus has ever seen a jawbone with such wide proportions. My friend, this dinosaur of yours might not be entirely Tyrannosaurus!"
Lao Wang was full of energy, his eyes almost shining, "Master, I'm going to stay up all night!" he shouted.
-------------Chapter Dividing Line---------------
Lao Wang did work all night, and he had completely cleaned out the right side of the mandible. Now Cheng Yijiu, Lao Wang, and Fred, a famous American paleontologist, were staring at this half of the mandible in a daze - because in the history of dinosaurs, they had never seen such a fossil.
It was a massive, broad, and well-developed mandible, nearly three meters long. The front end was particularly abnormally developed. Cheng Yijiu believed the entire gum structure had grown directly into the front of the mandible, resulting in the appearance of a large number of protruding teeth. The entire front of the mandible looked like a mace, covered in teeth.
"It looks a bit like a Helicoprion, but is that necessary? What's the use of those exogenous teeth? Are they a drill for ramming forward?" Cheng Yijiu couldn't quite figure out its purpose, but at least it looked incredibly ferocious. "I have a bad feeling..." Cheng Yijiu thought, and Lao Wang punched him. "Lucky guy! This has to be the new king of carnivorous dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus Rex is no match for it."
News of the excavation spread quickly within the community, and it was released almost as quickly as possible - the public knew that the true king of carnivorous dinosaurs had been discovered, a monster even larger than Tyrannosaurus Rex. Of course, many people scoffed at this, because every year there were similar news reports about the discovery of a carnivorous dinosaur that was even more ferocious and huge than Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The credibility of the news was very low, as these people could even claim that a mere demon frog was a giant frog that ate Tyrannosaurus Rex. However, this time, the paleontology community was in an uproar, and many famous paleontologists flew to Shandong to take a look.
Cheng Yijiu wondered if the stone, wrapped in insulation, was glowing for so long because of internal radiation. He used a Geiger counter and found no radiation. "Yeah, if there was radiation, this would have been long enough for my balls to rot." He glanced at the massive fossilized jaw and saw the ferocious fangs on its gums—this monster definitely didn't have a single row of teeth; it was more like it had two or even three rows.
Another thing is that this fossil probably won't be classified as a Tyrannosauroid now—the curvature of the jawbone suggests it had a wider jaw than any other Tyrannosaurus. Proportionally, this suggests another giant theropod existed in the Late Cretaceous, besides Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus.
The fossils were still being cleaned, and soon the other half of the mandible was unearthed. This mandible was very complete, with only a portion of the outer teeth missing. The skull had not yet been found, but the cervical vertebrae had been discovered. "The long spinous process is too exaggerated. How developed must the muscles be..."
This exceptionally large fossil, designated Tyrannosaurus sinensis Cheng'ensis, is likely to be renamed. Scientists are already arguing fiercely over its classification. They all agree that this monster is not a Tyrannosauroid, as dinosaurs in this family could not have such a developed jaw, complete with teeth on the outside.
This dinosaur was fragmented within the rock, its bones separated by numerous geological movements. Now, people were cleaning its long, massive cervical vertebrae, their towering spines suggesting they were once covered in massive, exaggerated muscles. The young girl digging nearby raised her hand, "We've found something."
Cheng Yijiu later learned that they had separated one of the dinosaur's forelimbs. "Only 1.6 meters? And it has three claws and toes - now it must be expelled from the Tyrannosauridae." However, the size of this dinosaur is probably unprecedented among carnivorous dinosaurs.
Cheng Yijiu became more and more worried, but fortunately he collected some nitro fertilizer, which immediately calmed him down a little.
There was much joy on this day, because a cow and horse found a part of the skull while cleaning it, about a meter from the lower jaw, which seemed to be turned inside out. Before that, everyone was speculating about what the head of this carnivorous dinosaur looked like - initially it was a Tyrannosaurus type, an enlarged version of the Tyrannosaurus head from Zhucheng, Shandong.
Then, a mandible appeared. This thing is most likely not from the Tyrannosauroid family, although it is a bit strange that such a small place like Zhucheng, Shandong, could have two top predators. No, the newly discovered one is the top one, and the Zhucheng Tyrannosaurus is now a secondary predator. Since it is not from the Tyrannosauroid family, considering the curvature of the mandible, this creature's skull is similar to that of an oversized Allosaurus or Carcharodontosaurus.
And now, everyone finally knows what this guy looks like.
It's time to seriously consider changing the name. Imperial Tyrannosaurus probably won't work, as it's definitely not a Tyrannosaurus.
So what species is it? And by what path did it evolve? In the field of paleontology, there are many species that seem to have appeared out of thin air due to a lack of fossils. Even humans themselves have lost hundreds of thousands of years.
The first thing that appeared was, of course, the sharp teeth. They were so densely packed that the front of the upper jaw resembled the lower jaw. The gums had grown so abnormally that the sharp teeth flared outward, though fortunately, they weren't contained like the lower jaw. "It's basically a crusher." Seeing the upper jaw and the complete lower jaw now in place, this was already a terrifying crusher.
The skull was truly enormous, exceeding three meters in length. When it was unearthed, everyone was stunned—for it was a theropod skull never before seen. More like a crocodile than a theropod, it was relatively flat, yet stereoscopic, and its mouth was incredibly deep. Perhaps the deepest mouth ever found in a theropod.
This gave it a large mouth, with dislocating upper and lower jaws, capable of opening an exaggerating 180 degrees. Adjacent to the exaggerated attachment surface of the masseter muscle was an equally exaggerated attachment surface for the temporalis muscle, enabling it to maneuver its jaws flexibly and effectively seize prey. The prominent bony protuberances and long spinous processes on the unearthed cervical vertebrae demonstrate that this creature possessed a highly developed neck musculature, perhaps unique among theropod dinosaurs—proving it could have grasped its prey and then lifted and swung it.
Its lethality is even more terrifying than that of Tyrannosaurus Rex, so its teeth can clearly be seen in terms of new and old sizes. After seeing this skull combination, all the paleontologists present were puzzled - which family should this thing be included in?
