The Cyanided Heart

Chapter 4: Refuge

"Buford..."

"I'm really... very sorry, it's all my waywardness." Buford stood up, "...Even if you are not Kate, but just a fugitive, I...as expected... I shouldn't have attacked you anyway."

"Then... what if we are spies of the German army?" Kate smiled, weighing the crossbow in her hand.

"Kay... Kate... that's not a good way to say it." Amy looked worried.

Startled, Buford clenched the gun in his hand, but was stopped by Kate.

"Seeing that you are still so kind, I am relieved." Kate smiled and said, "Even if you don't believe me, I believe that you are my friend—Buford Fit."

"Hey... I don't think there can be such a humorous spy? Although the words of the spy can indeed say my name..."

Buford smiled self-deprecatingly.

"Anyway, come with me." Buford spread his hands, "And... How about returning my crossbow to me?"

"Hey... so it's yours?" Kate scratched her head.

"If I remember correctly." Buford shook his head, "...it still has my name engraved on it."

"If you come with me, I can guarantee your safety for the time being....I mean, it's not an option for you to wander around like this." Buford turned on the flashlight, and his dark vision was instantly illuminated.

The three walked down the road. The moon was sinking slowly, surrounded by dark clouds, covering the bright moonlight.

"Coming."

Buford stopped and pointed ahead. There is a device similar to a cable car, and the cable extends down the mountain without seeing its end.

"Our refuge is tentatively at the bottom of the mountain." Buford said, "Come up, um... sit down. I'm going to start the machine."

The cable car is not as scary as you might think. The moist air after the rain poured into the nostrils, and the cool wind brushed the cheeks of the three of them.Amy and Kate were silent, while Buford concentrated on operating the speed of the cable car.

The cable car rushed down the mountain and finally stopped in a clearing.

"...Guys, come on, it's time to get out of the car." Buford held out his hand, "Come with me to meet the person in charge of the shelter."

"Hey? Buford, I was worried about you just now. I'm worried, so I came to take a look... Well, are there any new members? Welcome!" A deep and thick middle-aged male voice sounded behind the three of them.

A well-dressed and well-built middle-aged man with a small beard walked over with a lamp. He seemed to be around 40 years old.Amy leaned back nervously.

"Ah, it's Reed!" Buford was a little excited, "They are my friends! I don't want them wandering around in such a dangerous place, so..."

"That's right." The man called Reed smiled, "I'm very sorry, children, I didn't introduce myself just now. My name is John Ornest, and you can call me Reed. I am the temporary camp Heads of , we always welcome anyone who is looking for help. . . . well, like you.”

"Uh... hello, I'm Kate Rivert, Buford's friend." Kate scratched her head.

"Hi, I... I'm Amy Nestic." Amy was a little nervous.

"Well, I see. Children, come with me." Reed clapped his hands, "Although it is already the middle of the night, it is better to sleep than not to sleep. Buford, go prepare the tent. I I know you guys have a lot of questions, it's never too late to ask after taking a break. Okay?"

It doesn't look like he has any malicious intentions.Amy and Kate gestured to each other, followed Buford and Reed into the depths of the forest.

The three of them arrived at a small open space. There were about a dozen tents on the open space, with some torches planted around them.In addition, some cooking utensils and sundries were scattered in the open space.

"Thank you, children, have a good dream." Reid greeted Buford, "Take them to rest."

...

Kate was lying in the tent with her arms pillowed, the dim light of the fire flickering, making people drowsy.Amy was lying beside her, snoring softly.

Kate closed her eyes.Intuition told her that this man named Reed was not simple.

...

Jessica rubbed her eyes.I was lying on the sofa in an office, the clock on the wall showed 6:[-] in the morning, I don't know how long I slept.

Jessica sat up and straightened her uniform and blonde hair. There appeared to be breakfast on the table: a loaf of bread, a carton of milk and a can of fruit. It seems that Doctor Mengele ordered his subordinates to prepare it.

After tearing open the package of the bread, Jessica took a bite. The bread was not so soft, but it was better than the black bread that the prisoners of war ate.

Looking down through the old windows, the laborers coming and going were driven by soldiers to carry heavy objects, and there was the sound of crackling whips from time to time.

At this time, there was a knock on the door, and Jessica answered. The door opened, and a familiar figure in a white coat appeared outside the door. It's Doctor Mengele.

"I'm very sorry to disturb you so early, did you sleep well last night? Admiral Franz." Mengele smiled all over his face.

"Don't worry, I'm not used to sleeping in late." Jessica took a bite of the bread, "It's so-so. What's the matter with you coming here so early?"

"It's nothing important. But I hope you can visit Auschwitz at will...if you're not busy." Mengele gestured to write, "...How about writing more good things when you report to the superiors? "

Jessica threw away the wrapping paper and sneered: "Why are you bothering, is it because you are doing some disgraceful jobs?"

"It's about the same as your job." Mengele folded his arms.

"Tch." Jessica hesitated to speak. She turned around and picked up the military cap on the table, gritted her teeth and said, "Okay, we are kindred spirits. Please lead the way!" She also specially emphasized the pronunciation of the last few words.

...

Jessica followed Mengele downstairs.

"Let me introduce. This is the Birkenau camp, and my laboratory is also located here." Mengele pointed to the railway at the door, "...every time I send new personnel, I will bring a few doctors to work here .”

Mengele cleared his throat and continued: "...there are also the Auschwitz Camp and the Monowitz Camp. Some companies serving the army occasionally come to discuss business, and there are many large scientific research institutions among them. They often It’s on the surface, secretly doing things that betray their country.”

"People's hearts are really hard to predict... Is that what you want to say?" Jessica yawned.

"I don't want to talk about reasoning. Wouldn't it be good to indulge a little?" Mengele folded his arms and said, "You have nothing to do for now, how about visiting my work?"
