Chapter 69 Studying the Opponent, A Three-Person Film
Just as the white dress, like a wedding gown, was moving wildly without any wind.
The first wave of early bird ticket holders also left the cinema after watching the movie.
There is some division in opinions about this film between Jet Li fans and casual kung fu enthusiasts.
Fans generally felt that He Xi's image was too prominent, somewhat overshadowing the main character in the early stages. However, the satisfaction of his defeat by Li Lianjie was doubled.
If they had used a short, stocky actor like Eight-Taels-of-Gold, he might not have been as scene-stealing in the beginning, but the ending wouldn't have been as satisfying.
Casual fans, on the other hand, liked He Xi's appearance and skills from the beginning, understood his later descent into darkness, and felt deeply sorry for his final fate.
Some people even projected themselves into the character of Tianbao, believing that if they had experienced the same thing, they would probably have turned to the dark side even more thoroughly than him.
He at least had feelings for Junbao from beginning to end; the saying "If I become rich and powerful, I will not forget you" applies to him.
Naturally, He Xi's image and name were remembered by many people.
Many people started asking about his background and wanted to find other movies he had acted in, only to discover that he was a complete newcomer.
"He almost stole Jet Li's thunder in his very first film! This newcomer is quite good, I like him!"
Casual fans are talking about it with great interest.
Li Lianjie's fans, however, frowned inwardly.
First Zhao Wenzhuo, then He Xi. These days, all the young action stars want to climb over Li Lianjie to get ahead.
Aside from He Xi, there wasn't much discussion about other topics related to "Tai Chi Master Zhang Sanfeng".
Admittedly, Li Lianjie's final Tai Chi performance was very impressive.
However, compared to the previous two "Fong Sai-yuk" and two "Once Upon a Time in China" films this year, the plot of the whole movie feels somewhat...mediocre!
Last year, Stephen Chow single-handedly occupied the top five spots on the Hong Kong Island box office charts, and seven of the top thirteen spots.
The reason why every film he makes is a hit is because his films cover a wide range of topics.
Martial arts films, police and gangster films, detective films, urban films...
Although the main theme is comedy, the different types of films offer different jokes, so that the audience will not feel repetitive and each time there is something new.
However, all of Jet Li's films are period kung fu movies, all following the formula of the villains being defeated and the protagonist achieving final victory.
The audience is getting a little tired of it.
Moreover, unlike the protagonists of the previous installments who were powerful from beginning to end, this one uses a technique of building suspense before revealing the protagonist's strength. The protagonist is almost killed and then goes insane.
The film aims to portray Zhang Sanfeng's arduous growth and the philosophical idea of "letting go of burdens and embracing a new life" through this transformation.
However, how many people who watch martial arts films are willing to spend the time and energy to think about philosophy?
They just want to have fun.
[Tai Chi Master Zhang Sanfeng] clearly didn't give them complete satisfaction.
Of course, this wasn't just Li Lianjie's problem.
According to incomplete statistics, more than 50 martial arts films were released in Hong Kong in 93 alone.
After the test of time, "Tai Chi Master Zhang Sanfeng" defeated 90% of its opponents, becoming a classic that is still worth watching 30 years later.
However, audiences in 93 were already aesthetically fatigued by the influx of numerous martial arts films of varying quality, making it difficult for them to settle down and watch a good movie that tells a story and conveys philosophical ideas.
On the same day, another movie, "New Age of Love," was also released.
Although it was just a romance film, it still managed to gross HK$3100 million at the box office.
It became the third highest-grossing film in Hong Kong Island this year, only behind "Flirting Scholar" and "All's Well, Ends Well".
Furthermore, it received 12 nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards next year and won 6 awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
He certainly stole the show.
In hindsight, the story of this movie is quite cliché: it's about a down-on-his-luck artistic young man and a cheerful girl with a terminal illness who help and redeem each other, with the latter eventually becoming famous and the former dying.
However, perhaps due to the abundance of martial arts films on the market, this artistic romance film, which lacked grand scenes and big stars, unexpectedly rose to prominence and achieved a remarkable comeback.
But honestly, the movie was really tear-jerking.
"Why did Amin have to die? The director is so cruel!"
In the movie theater, Yuan Jieying covered her face, tears streaming down her face.
The night was long and neither of them could sleep. The two of them had just ruined their dresses in the storage room and were planning to leave the banquet hall to find a hotel room to retaliate.
After walking only a few steps, Yang Ziqiong stopped him.
"Ah Ying, did you ruin your clothes? I couldn't find you anywhere!"
"My assistant has some clothes; I'll find you a set to change into."
"Director Er's 'New Endless Love' is being released today at the same time as ours. It's supposedly a romance film. Shall we go check it out and gather some information?"
Yang Ziqiong, perhaps drunk, was deliberately trying to have some fun.
Even though he clearly saw that Yuan Jieying and He Xi were in a hurry to leave, he deliberately stopped them.
He even looked like he was enjoying the show.
They were practically shouting, "I know you're in a hurry, but don't rush!"
Yuan Jieying had calmed down a bit when she was tearing her dress. Although she seemed anxious, she wasn't actually that anxious.
Seeing Yang Ziqiong's expression, she rolled her eyes and immediately agreed.
After changing their clothes, the three of them found a nearby cinema under the Xinbao Cinema chain, bought tickets for the most secluded corner seats, and sat down.
Although the final box office of "Endless Love" was very high, the occupancy rate was not high before the word-of-mouth was established.
It was still the midnight showing, so there were even fewer people.
Only a dozen or so people were sitting in the middle, and the back rows were very quiet.
He Xi sat on the far side, with Yuan Jieying inside, and Yang Ziqiong inside.
After the movie started, Michelle Yeoh was quickly drawn to it.
It truly deserves its Hong Kong Film Award for Best Film. Although the story is clichéd, the cinematography and narrative are not sentimental at all. Instead, the overall feel is unhurried, natural, and smooth.
Anita Yuen, a former Miss Hong Kong winner, recently won the Best New Performer award at the 93 Hong Kong Film Awards, and this time she also delivered an award-winning performance.
As for the male lead, Lau Ching-wan, needless to say, there's never any need to worry about his acting skills.
He could improvise as "Mr. Lau, a concerned citizen of Hong Kong Island" when stopped by a reporter on the street, and it would all feel so natural that there was no sense of incongruity at all (doge).
Not to mention in such meticulously crafted art films.
However, none of this has anything to do with He Xi.
Not long after he sat down, with Yuan Jieying's request and the appearance of the system task, he began to quietly get busy.
Otherwise, what do you think Yuan Jieying was crying about? The sentence before that wasn't missing any words...
