Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 5 Qingpu Training Camp, Du Mansion
The car drove towards Qingpu County and soon left the city. Farmland was everywhere along the way, but there were no farmers who should have been busy in the fields.
However, many people fled with their families.
It took an hour for this car, traveling at 30 kilometers per hour, to reach Qingpu County.
"Director, which way should we go next?" Lin Rui asked.
"Keep driving straight ahead," Deputy Director Yu replied.
The car traveled through the county town, where most of the buildings were brick and tile structures from the Qing Dynasty, and many trees were planted on both sides of the road.
When they were almost at the west gate of the county town, Deputy Director Yu told Lin Rui to turn left, and they arrived at their destination.
The sign that reads "Xixi Elementary School" hangs at the entrance, but it has now been requisitioned for military training.
The guard saw the car approaching, glanced at it, and realized it was Deputy Director Yu sitting there, so he immediately opened the gate.
The car drove in and stopped in front of a small building.
Lin Rui got out of the car, opened the door for Deputy Director Yu, and the two went upstairs one after the other.
The first office on the left on the second floor belonged to Deputy Director Yu. He opened the door and let Lin Rui in.
Then, looking at Lin Rui, who was dressed in a tank crew uniform, he said, "You need to change out of that. I'll write you a note; go to the logistics department, and they'll arrange it for you. From now on, you're my driver."
Lin Rui stood up straight: "Yes." He feigned ignorance: "Chief, why is there no one in our special operations team?"
"Isn't everyone recruiting? Let me tell you, anyone who wants to join the special forces and train here has to be the best of the best, and there are tons of people signing up. If you work hard, you'll definitely be better off than in the army."
"clear."
"Go."
Deputy Director Yu handed the written note to Lin Rui.
.............
Holding the note, Lin Rui walked out of the office.
Where is the logistics department located?
He looked around but didn't see the logistics department's office.
These kinds of departments are usually related to warehouses, and they should be on the first floor for easy handling of materials.
He went down the stairs, walked around the school, and finally found the logistics department in an old classroom in the southwest corner of the school.
A temporary wooden sign was nailed to the door. Pushing the door open, you would find the room piled high with things.
Several logistics soldiers in gray military uniforms were busy counting supplies, while a supervisor sat behind a long table writing and registering.
Seeing Lin Rui enter, the manager glanced at the slip of paper in his hand and led him to the shelf in the corner: "Get what you need according to the slip of paper: a uniform, a pair of cloth shoes, an enamel mug, a quilt, and toiletries."
Lin Rui took the neatly folded gray military uniform. The fabric was rough and stiff, like new cloth. The collar was embroidered with the small words "Special Training".
He carried the supplies and followed the logistics soldiers to the dormitory area.
Originally a student dormitory for Xixi Elementary School, it was converted into a collective barracks. There were four wooden beds in one room, covered with straw, with only one bed by the window empty.
"Just sleep here. The others are either out shopping or haven't been transferred yet," the logistics soldier said, then turned and left.
The dormitory was quiet, with only the rustling of leaves in the wind outside the window.
Lin Rui placed the supplies on the empty bed, took off his tank soldier uniform, and put on a gray cloth uniform, which was slightly small and a bit tight on his body.
He quickly washed up, but couldn't wash away the fatigue from the journey.
In just over a day, he experienced three transitions: from the battlefield to the prison to here. Coupled with the exhaustion from using his superpowers, he was physically and mentally exhausted.
Although the conditions here are simple, it is a place where you can rest with peace of mind.
He lay down on the bed, the rough texture of the straw seeping through the thin mattress, which strangely made him feel at ease. He soon fell into a deep sleep and slept soundly through the night.
He slept until dawn the next day.
The crowing of roosters outside the window woke Lin Rui.
The morning light streamed through the window, spilling onto the floor and reflecting on my face.
He opened his eyes and looked around; he was still alone in the dormitory.
He couldn't help but ponder how he should conduct himself in this chaotic world.
After leaving the military court and being assigned to the special operations unit, it meant that he could no longer return to the armored company.
After all, when he was taken away by the military law department, the company commander didn't even stop him. Going back would only make the commander dislike him more.
It's better to work hard here.
Although being a driver isn't a formal job, you'll be in contact with Deputy Director Yu every day, and if you handle things properly, you'll naturally have better opportunities in the future.
Thinking about this...
He got up, dressed, put on his shoes, and walked straight to the parking lot.
The car was covered in mud.
He then went to the logistics department again to get a bucket, rags, and oil, washed the car, and added more oil.
Finally, I opened the hood, checked that the engine oil and coolant were sufficient, and then pulled the fuel pump lever a few times to pre-pressurize before closing the hood and waiting by the front of the car.
Not long after, Deputy Director Yu came downstairs. He wasn't wearing his military uniform today; instead, he was wearing a dark blue long gown and a top hat.
"Let's go."
Deputy Director Yu spoke and walked straight to the back seat of the car.
Lin Rui immediately went forward, opened the car door, and after he was seated, closed the door and went around to sit in the driver's seat.
"Director, where are we going?"
"Waghnegro".
Lin Rui knew how to get there from his memories. Above him was the International Settlement, below him was Shanghai County, which was known locally as the Chinese-controlled area, and to the west was the French Concession.
The car started and set off from Xixi Primary School, heading towards downtown Shanghai.
On the way, Deputy Director Yu asked, "Have you had breakfast?"
"I didn't eat," Lin Rui replied.
Deputy Director Yu handed over a one-yuan note from behind: "Here you go, you can handle it yourself later."
"Thank you, Director," Lin Rui replied, taking the money.
After driving for nearly an hour, passing through the densely populated old town area, we arrived at Huage Road.
Here, the buildings along the roadside gradually become more stylish, with Western-style villas replacing the old brick and tile houses, and people wearing suits and cheongsams can be seen on the street from time to time.
"Drive straight ahead, yes, this is it."
Under the guidance of Deputy Director Yu, Lin Rui drove the car to a magnificent Western-style building and stopped it.
A sign reading "Du Mansion" hung at the entrance, and several men dressed in black long gowns stood at the door, their eyes scanning the surroundings warily.
Lin Rui stopped the car, engaged the handbrake, and got out to open the car door for Deputy Director Yu.
After getting out of the car, Deputy Director Yu straightened his long gown and instructed Lin Rui, "Just park the car here. Go find some breakfast nearby and come back to wait after you've finished eating."
"Yes, Director," Lin Rui replied, straightening up.
Watching Deputy Director Yu follow the men in black into the mansion, Lin Rui leaned against the car, seemingly casually surveying his surroundings.
There were no pedestrians on the Du Mansion side; everyone detoured to the other side.
But people kept coming and going from the mansion, all dressed smartly, smiling and exchanging polite words.
Is this the Du Mansion belonging to that person?
Lin Rui's heart stirred, and he sat in the driver's seat and started the engine.
With the advent of a three-dimensional field of view, the field of vision is significantly improved while sitting in a vehicle, but it is still smaller than the field of vision inside a tank.
He passed through the house wall and saw what was inside.
The first floor has a restaurant, kitchen, and servants.
The second floor is where guests are received. The living room is in a Chinese style, with exquisitely carved wooden armchairs and a coffee table. Several ink paintings and calligraphy are hanging on the wall, and a gilded incense burner is placed in the corner, with wisps of smoke rising gently.
Deputy Director Yu was brought in just then.
A middle-aged man wearing a dark blue silk jacket with subtle patterns and holding a cigar in his left hand entered the living room through the inner door to meet with her.
This should be Du Sheng, a powerful figure in the Green Gang.
