Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 3 Shift Change and Military Law Office
Using his supernatural ability, Lin Rui observed the situation of the Type 92 infantry gun. The Japanese gunner was reloading the shells, two infantrymen were crouching on both sides of the gun barrel, and five Japanese soldiers were holding rifles and vigilantly observing the surroundings.
How should we play?
It's impossible to just drive out and attack directly; you have to stop driving and then operate the 47mm howitzer to fire, so you can't do both at the same time.
The best way is to hide in the ruins and find a way to shoot through.
He drove the tank into the ruins, the tracks creaking as they pressed down on the bricks and timber.
Fortunately, the gunfire and artillery outside were too intense to hear.
The tank moved through the ruins, stopping and starting, constantly searching for firing angles.
Finally, we found it.
At the location of a collapsed bungalow, there is a narrow gap in the view, which allows one to see through the rubble and lock onto the Type 92 infantry gun at the far end of the alley.
Lin Rui immediately pulled the parking brake lever, and the tank came to a steady stop behind the broken wall. The hull was half-covered by charred wood and rubble, with only the front of the turret visible, perfectly blending into the background of the battlefield ruins.
He quickly switched to the gunner's position, repeatedly adjusting the angle using his supernatural three-dimensional vision.
The gap was barely wide enough for the gun barrel to protrude; even the slightest deviation would have hit the ruins and exposed the position.
That means you only have one chance.
at this time.
The Japanese gunners had finished loading and were bending over to make minor adjustments to the guns, about to aim at the infantry company's position again.
Lin Rui didn't dare to delay. He steadied the turret control wheel with his left hand, gripped the launch pedal with his right hand, and stared intently at the gun barrel baffle that his supernatural ability had locked onto.
The area of impact there was large, and it was no match for the power of a 47mm shell; a single shot would be enough to destroy it.
"Bang!"
The tank cannon roared in the confined space, its muzzle flash scorching the charred wood in the cracks of the ruins.
The shell whistled out along the edge of the broken wall, accurately hitting the muzzle of the Type 92 infantry gun, and the violent explosion instantly tore the gun barrel apart.
At the moment of the explosion, the gunner was blasted several meters away by the shockwave, and the guard infantry had no time to dodge. They were pierced by flying shrapnel and fell to the ground on the spot.
The remaining Japanese soldiers were thrown into chaos upon seeing this, huddling behind the brick houses and frantically raising their guns to fire, but unable to find their targets.
Lin Rui immediately operated the coaxial machine gun and fired at the windows of the brick house. The bullets penetrated the broken window frames, suppressing the Japanese soldiers so that they dared not raise their heads.
This situation greatly surprised the Nationalist army across the street.
What kind of attack came from that managed to rout the Japanese?!
The battlefield officer excitedly stood up and shouted, "Brothers, our allies are attacking! This is a great opportunity to launch an offensive. Let's charge in and cooperate with our allies!"
"Charge! Take the position!"
More than thirty remaining soldiers pounced out like tigers, using the ruins as cover to advance rapidly, throwing grenades one after another at the brick houses where the Japanese soldiers were hiding, with explosions rising and falling.
Deprived of infantry artillery support and suppressed by tank fire, the Japanese army's resistance weakened, and within just over ten minutes, they were routed. The remaining Japanese soldiers fled the area in a panic.
Then, Lin Rui drove the tank slowly out of the ruins and onto the street.
The soldiers gathered around, some patting the tank armor, others cheering "Well done, tank brothers!" Their faces were filled with the excitement of surviving a disaster and the joy of victory.
Lin Rui opened the hatch and poked his head out: "Does anyone have any water? I'm very thirsty."
Immediately, a soldier handed Lin Rui a water bottle, his voice choked with emotion, "Thank you so much, otherwise our entire company would have been wiped out here!"
Lin Rui took the water bottle and drank a couple of sips. His gaze swept across the crowd and he happened to bump into the battlefield officer.
The officer stood not far away, his hands behind his back, his face ashen, his brows furrowed, and his eyes filled with resentment as he looked at Lin Rui.
He clearly still resented Lin Rui's "disobedience," and the victory that came from that disobedience drove him even more insane.
Lin Rui ignored him, returned the water bottle to the soldier, closed the hatch, and checked the tank's condition.
There are 7 artillery shells left, less than 30 machine gun bullets, and the fuel gauge shows that there is only one-third of fuel left.
If the Japanese attack again, can this tank hold out?
He wasn't sure, but on the battlefield, one has no choice but to persevere.
Time passed slowly, the sun set, and the sky gradually darkened.
As night slowly fell over the city of Shanghai, the Japanese air raids ceased.
Taking advantage of the precious rest period, the soldiers were busy clearing the battlefield, treating the wounded, and building defensive fortifications. Lin Rui parked the tank at the core of the position, acting as a mobile fortress, and was on alert for the Japanese army's nighttime counterattack.
I didn't sleep a wink all night. Sporadic gunfire and distant artillery fire filled the night. Fortunately, the Japanese army did not launch a large-scale attack, so it was a close call.
Just as dawn was breaking, a communications soldier rushed in with orders from his superiors, loudly proclaiming: "By order of headquarters, all missing tanks and crew members of the armored corps are to return to their units immediately. The 88th Division is to be relieved of its duties, and the 61st Division will take over the defense of this area!"
Lin Rui emerged from the tank and waved goodbye to the infantry company soldiers waiting for their rotation.
"Brothers, see you again someday."
The soldiers all stopped to see him off, but the officer remained expressionless, turned and walked into the ruins without even saying goodbye.
Lin Rui stopped thinking about it, retreated back into the tank, sat in the driver's seat, and slowly drove the tank along the dilapidated streets.
Driving south along Henan North Road, the scene was one of devastation. Collapsed buildings and the bodies of civilians lying on the roadside all spoke of the cruelty of this battle.
It took nearly an hour.
Lin Rui finally drove the tank to the Suzhou River, where it had become safe.
"Halt!" At the Henan Road Bridge ahead, the officer stopped the Vickers tank.
Lin Rui stopped and climbed out of the tank. "Lin Rui, a tank soldier of the 2nd Company, 1st Battalion, Central Tank Regiment, is ordered to withdraw from the front line."
The officer looked him over and said, "At this point, you're the only tank that can come back from the north. You're lucky to be alive."
He waved and said, "Let's go."
"Yes, sir," Lin Rui replied subconsciously, a habit stemming from the fusion of bodily memories.
He drove his tank across the Henan Road Bridge to the International Settlement on the south bank.
Across the Suzhou River, the two sides present completely different scenes.
The International Settlement on the south bank was peaceful, and the well-dressed people seemed completely unconcerned about the war on the other side.
But not everyone; a group of young people dressed as students held up banners and flags, and the leader was giving a loud speech.
Some of the passersby stopped and stood there, while others raised their hands and shouted slogans together.
Lin Rui stopped the tank and waited for the convoy to pass before continuing.
Half an hour later, we finally arrived at the assembly point.
The remaining tanks of the armored regiment were neatly parked, and the soldiers were busy inspecting equipment and replenishing ammunition.
Upon seeing Lin Rui return in the lost tank, several comrades immediately surrounded him, their faces filled with joy.
Lin Rui pushed open the hatch and got out of the car. Just as he was about to talk to his comrades, two soldiers in military police uniforms with serious expressions walked over quickly.
The lead military policeman pulled out a document and loudly read aloud: "By order of the Military Law Department, Lin Rui, a tank soldier of the Armored Corps, violated the provisional battlefield military regulations on the Henan-North Road battlefield on August 29th by abandoning infantry cover and disobeying orders from superiors. He is now being detained in accordance with the law and awaits further processing!"
Before he could finish speaking, two soldiers stepped forward and restrained Lin Rui, who had just gotten out of the car.
Lin Rui was stunned, then realized that the battlefield officer must have held a grudge and reported him to his superiors, fabricating charges against him.
The comrades around him looked astonished. Some tried to plead for him, but the company commander stopped them with a stern look.
Now that it is wartime, the military law department has the greatest power, and can arrest even soldiers of the Central Army at any time.
Of course, this only applies to soldiers; officers are a different story.
Lin Rui refused to believe he couldn't defend himself.
He single-handedly destroyed the Japanese machine gun positions and infantry guns, saving the entire infantry company and holding the position.
Can't such merit outweigh the demerit?
