Chapter 11 Special Wards
Inside and outside the intensive care unit at Hills University Hospital.
This is a special ward.
These patients seem to have no privacy whatsoever; one of the walls has been replaced with one-way glass, allowing the doctors behind to have an unobstructed view.
Like poultry and livestock.
Professor Jack gazed at the elderly people who were on the verge of death but never truly died through the one-way glass, his eyes cold and focused.
These people were middle-class residents of Hills, with some savings, but far from enough to cure their illnesses.
Medical expenses in Amerigo Veterans are extremely high, and even millionaires cannot afford long-term hospitalizations.
Therefore, these patients signed an agreement with the hospital:
Within the limited span of life, one can access basic medical care to sustain life.
Correspondingly, after their deaths, their remains would end up in the hands of hospitals, becoming experimental material or even teaching aids.
This is not uncommon; in Amerigo Veterinary Hospital, many patients with cancer, leukemia, and pulmonary fibrosis voluntarily sign this agreement.
Professor Jack's suggestion that "this is a mutually beneficial solution for patients who do not have the financial means to recover" was met with strong moral condemnation.
Some have commented, "Jack is so desperate for material that he's even started buying up corpses from living people!"
But Jack didn't care at all.
He doesn't care about getting fresher material.
What he truly regrets is that, despite bearing such a bad reputation, this special ward only produces elderly people with organ failure and acne all over their bodies.
It was far removed from the youthful flesh and blood he longed for.
"In order to obtain fresh material, I specially gathered the patients who agreed to donate their bodies together and arranged for someone to keep an eye on them at all times."
Jack withdrew his gaze and looked at Kong Jiu in the shadows.
"But unfortunately, even my most outstanding student, George, could not predict death, missed the moment a patient passed away, and could not send these people who should have died long ago to my laboratory table in the first instance."
These patients are terrified of dying.
Perhaps it was donating one's body, not out of genuine feeling.
A significant number of them will disconnect the alarm connected to their heartbeat in the final moments of their lives.
Without careful observation, deceased patients are often mistaken for being asleep, thus missing the optimal time for treatment.
Humans are ultimately afraid of death.
"Jiujiu, your promise really interests me, but I don't believe your judgment on death."
Jack spoke frankly, pacing back and forth in the observation room with his hands behind his back.
He established this special ward under moral pressure, gaining a relatively fresh source of material, but it was all elderly people and patients with chronic diseases.
Youth is the foundation of good health!
The body Kong Jiu brought was young, fresh, and without a single bullet hole, which already surprised him greatly.
But he claims that it can even surpass himself in terms of novelty?
How could Jack not be tempted?
But even though he was tempted, he knew it wasn't reasonable.
Kong Jiu patrolled the lower city every day. Whenever he saw a homeless person who had frozen to death the night before, he would immediately carry them back for treatment and send them to the laboratory. It was already the next day by then.
If they cooperate with gangsters and can achieve "on-the-spot killing," then there is still a chance.
However, that would not only be more immoral and cause fatal injuries, but would also greatly diminish the value of the corpse.
He couldn't help but suspect that Kong Jiu was exaggerating.
However, Kong Jiu offered to let him test it.
"I have dealt with death for a long time, Professor, and I can prove it to you."
So they went to the observation room of this special ward.
"Observing people near death is a technical job, Jūjū. This is my apprentice, George, who is responsible for keeping an eye on these old 'whistleblowers'."
Jack introduced a white student to Conju, his tone laced with pride.
"My apprentice is very accurate in judging when a patient is dying. Once someone dies, he will immediately arrange the disposal of the body."
Kong Jiu frowned.
"Did he realize that the person in bed number sixteen had been gone for a while?"
Upon hearing this, Jack and George both looked towards the ward.
Sure enough, the old man in bed number sixteen lay peacefully on the bed, and the alarm light went out.
It was obviously pulled out.
"Shit! George, you've neglected it again! Quick, arrange for the body to be disposed of properly, now!"
Jack slapped the student's back in a frantic manner, urging him to run out of the observation room.
A short while later, several people wearing masks and protective suits rushed into the next ward and hurriedly carried away the patient in bed number sixteen.
"Damn it, these old bastards are so clever! They all know how to turn off the alarm and pretend to be asleep!"
Jack glared through gritted teeth at the rows of patients in the ward who looked like they were "asleep," his eyes practically spitting fire.
"If the agreement hadn't stipulated that what I was doing was unethical, and that I wasn't allowed to 'monitor heartbeats and put more stress on patients,' why would I bother having someone keep an eye on them!"
"Don't let your students leave!"
Kong Jiu then added abruptly.
"Bed number three should be ready soon too."
Jack suddenly turned his head to look at bed number three.
The old lady lay peacefully in the hospital bed, looking no different from being asleep, but the alarm light was still on.
He turned back and stared intently at Kong Jiu.
"Soon too? How did you know..."
"Beep beep beep—"
The alarm for the patient's death suddenly sounded in the monitoring room, interrupting Jack's questioning.
Jack pressed the pager button with a complicated expression and roared, "Quick, come back! Another one!"
Jack's students, who were still in the hallway outside, turned back.
After another flurry of activity, Jack caught his breath and fixed his gaze on Kong Jiu.
"I underestimated you, Jiu Jiu. I thought you got your postgraduate degree by currying favor with Ofavi."
Kong Jiu pursed his lips and did not respond to Jack's words.
He glanced at the patients behind the curtain wall, then got up and walked outside.
"Professor Jack, may I borrow your lab's computer for a moment? I need to write a grant request, is that alright?"
Jack nodded slightly.
Kong Jiu went out and left, leaving behind a single sentence before departing.
"The patient in bed number 29 will be leaving in about ten minutes, but I should have finished writing the application by then. Please wait a moment."
After saying this, Kong Jiu closed the door and left.
Jack's eyes darted around, and his lips gradually parted into a wide grin that stretched almost to his ears.
His anger stemmed from the fact that his students were even more incompetent and careless than he had imagined!
But the current ecstasy is based on the astonishing level of prediction about death that Kong Jiu has demonstrated!
Talent!
Absolutely a genius!
Given this performance, Jack had no doubt that Kong Jiu could deliver remains "fresh enough to have died within twelve hours".
He had even begun to fantasize about what it would be like if Kong Jiu pushed the lifelike remains of many young people in front of him!
"Hehe, hehehe, hehehehehe."
In the monitoring room, Jack's sinister laughter echoed.
Five minutes later, Kong Jiu returned with a paper application form, which still smelled of printer ink.
"Beep beep beep beep..."
The alarm sounded as Kong Jiu handed the documents to Jack.
This time, Jack didn't panic and lose his composure. Instead, he gave a wink to the apprentice who was waiting nearby.
The latter stormed out and headed straight for bed number 29.
He calmly picked up the pen and signed his name on the report, which was still warm from the printer.
