Lord: My Shop Connects to Modern Times
Chapter 49 Captured alive
The moment the first can hit the shields held high by the soldiers:
"boom!!!"
A dull yet violent explosion suddenly erupted in the crowd!
The firelight pierced the darkness, and the broken pottery shards and the stones and iron filings inside swept out like the scythe of death!
Instantly, soldiers within five or six steps of the impact point were struck as if by an invisible giant hammer, screaming and falling to the ground. Those closer were blown to pieces!
Then came the second sound, the third sound...
Explosions erupted one after another in the crowd!
Loud explosions continued, flames flickered, and smoke mixed with the stench of blood rose into the sky!
The once well-organized assault formation was instantly torn open with several gaps, and screams of agony drowned out the shouts of battle!
The soldiers of Ironstone Fortress were thrown into a huge panic. They didn't know what it was, and they only saw their comrades being blown to pieces in the explosion and flames!
"What is that?!"
"They have a high-ranking monk?!"
"What sorcerer! That's divine punishment! It's divine punishment!"
The confidence that the catapults had given them crumbled instantly. The offensive from the north stalled, and even a small-scale retreat occurred, because anyone who got close would be torn to shreds by this inexplicable weapon.
"Don't stop! Keep hurling! Ballistae, aim at their catapults and give them a good blast!" Seeing the offensive was effective, Leon was invigorated and immediately roared his command.
……
Almost at the same time that the explosions rang out to the north and the defenders' attention was drawn to the maximum extent, shadows were approaching from the relatively low and rudimentary walls to the south of Grayrock Town.
Gavin was fully armored, his heart pounding in his chest, a mixture of tension, excitement, and a hint of madness.
Standing beside him were three messengers clad in full armor, their eyes glowing red. Behind them were dozens of carefully selected elite soldiers, holding their breath in concentration, including ten low-ranking warriors.
This time, Gavin really went all out. The main attacking force had almost drained his coffers, and he even borrowed some elite troops from Count Karl. With these three envoys, he was absolutely confident that this operation would succeed.
The leading envoy slightly raised his hand, making a gesture of advancing, the movement stiff yet carrying an unquestionable authority.
As the hand gesture was made, the team moved silently, like venomous snakes slithering in the night, taking advantage of the deafening battle sounds from the north and the cover of darkness, to a spot not far from the south wall.
There were also a few sentries on the wall, but their attention was clearly mostly drawn to the fierce fighting to the north.
The sentry in the watchtower was not alerted until the grappling hook made a slight whooshing sound as it touched the wall.
"Enemy attack! Ah!"
The warning shout had barely left his lips when a shadowy figure, swift as a ghost, pounced on the wall, and in the next instant, a sharp blade slashed across his throat.
He was one of the messengers, and his movements were faster than a human's.
"Go!" Gavin growled, grabbing the grappling hook and climbing upwards. The messenger and the others quickly followed.
The defenses on the south wall were indeed weak! There were fewer than twenty militiamen stationed there, and they were scattered around.
When Gavin and his men scaled the wall, they encountered only sporadic and hasty resistance before being quickly cut down by the elite assault team.
The breach has been created!
Gavin was overjoyed; he could almost see the chaos inside Grayrock Town and Lynn Cole's panicked face.
He looked at the envoy, whose red, gleaming eyes swept across the somewhat empty square within the walls and the faint outline of stone houses in the distance. His hoarse voice rang out: "Straight to the Lord's Castle."
"Follow me! Target: Lord's Stone House! Kill!" Gavin drew his longsword and leaped down from the wall first. Dozens of elite soldiers surged into Grayrock Town like a flood bursting its banks!
However, the expected chaos and panic did not materialize.
Before Gavin and his team could even begin their search, Lynn had already appeared before them with a group of men.
"Stop!" Gavin raised his hand to stop the group. He looked at Lynn, who was a hundred meters away, and the group of people holding strange, pipe-like objects. A sense of vigilance rose in his heart.
Gavin had experienced firsthand the power of Lynn's strange gadgets, so he dared not be careless at all.
Lynn ignored Gavin and his team, his gaze slowly passing over them and settling on the few mangled corpses on the wall.
People died; even our own people died, which was inevitable.
Although he knew the war would end this way, Lynn's anger was now almost tangible.
He wasn't killed by monsters, nor by starvation or thirst. His first death came from his own kind, from this group of nobles. Even now, Lynn doesn't know what he did to offend them.
"Ready—Fire!"
Without any other words, a command devoid of any emotion rang out from Lynn's mouth.
Lynn's team quickly crouched down, held their flintlock pistols horizontally, and aimed.
Before Gavin could react and issue the command, a series of deep but orderly roars suddenly erupted!
"Bang!!!"
Not just one, but at least ten terrifyingly loud noises that almost overlapped!
The explosions were sharper, more intense, and filled with a metallic ferocity than those from the north!
More than ten tongues of fire spewed out simultaneously in the pre-dawn darkness, and white smoke instantly filled the air!
The dozen or so elite soldiers at the front of Gavin's team, including two low-ranking warriors, seemed to have run into an invisible iron wall!
Their armor was torn apart in an instant, and lead pellets pierced their flesh with brutal force, kicking up clouds of blood mist!
Before the scream could even fully escape, the person was sent flying like a rag doll, crashing to the ground, twitching twice before falling still!
Gavin, who was slightly behind in the group, felt a terrifying shriek pass by his ears, and his cheeks stung from the scorching air. Instantly, a group of his men in front of him fell to the ground!
His expression changed drastically, and he almost dropped the longsword from his hand.
As the white smoke dissipated, two rows of soldiers stood silently in front of them.
The first row is squatting, the second row is standing, holding the strange, dark, smoky iron pipes horizontally in their hands.
Their faces showed tension, but their movements were as orderly as if they were training, as they were filling something into the iron pipe.
"Free fire, volley fire in turns."
The musketeers reloaded and raised their guns again.
Gavin sensed something was wrong and yelled, "Get out of the way!"
Before the team could react, another volley of shots came.
The smoke of battle rose again! Although the enemy troops who had rushed into the town had scattered to find cover, in the relatively open area and under such dense gunfire, people continued to be hit and fall.
"What kind of weapon is that?! A devil's weapon! It's the devil's weapon!"
Soldiers screamed in despair. This unprecedented attack method, with its terrifying sounds and horrific killing power, instantly shattered the morale of many.
Gavin was terrified and looked at the messenger.
The red light in the envoy's eyes flickered violently, as if he had also been surprised. He let out a low roar, and his figure suddenly transformed into a black line, rushing directly towards the musket formation at an astonishing speed!
The other two envoys followed closely behind, moving at an equally absurd speed!
Their target is Lynn. Once Lynn is dead, the opposing forces will be leaderless and pose no further threat.
However, while the idea was good, they underestimated the power and speed of the flintlock musket.
As the first rank reloaded their ammunition, the second rank had already begun aiming for the next round of firing.
The messenger moved quickly, but the bullet was even faster!
At such close range, the lead bullets struck them almost in a straight line!
The faint black aura surrounding their bodies fluctuated violently and dimmed, and lead pellets were deeply embedded in their specially made armor, even piercing through parts of their bodies!
Black, viscous liquid seeped from the wound!
One of the messengers let out a painful howl and staggered. The other, even more enraged, tried to charge forward.
But their injuries no longer allowed them to charge forward.
The leader of the messengers' eyes flashed red. Ignoring his injuries, he turned around and, with even greater speed than when he came, leaped over the south wall in a few bounds and disappeared outside Grayrock Town.
Gavin watched helplessly as the messengers he had placed so much hope in either died or fled, and a sense of despair inevitably rose in his heart.
"No...impossible..." Gavin murmured, his confidence melting away like ice and snow under the sun.
He looked at the elite soldiers falling around him, at the strange iron pipe that spewed flames and death, and at Lynn's calm yet seemingly all-controlling figure in the distance. A chill ran from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
Run! We have to run!
Once the thought took hold, it was impossible to suppress. He no longer cared about the mission and turned to try to escape through the gap in the south wall.
"Grab him!" Lynn's voice seemed to ring right next to my ear.
Several hunters who had been lurking on the periphery of the battlefield, waiting for their chance, suddenly pounced out of the shadows, tackled the disoriented Gavin to the ground, and tied him up like a dumpling.
The battle in the south quickly subsided as the instigator fled, Gavin was captured, and the enemy forces were either killed or fled.
The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder, blood, and the stench of those eerie black stains.
Lynn knelt down in front of Gavin, who was tightly bound and looked ashen-faced.
"Lord Gavin," his voice was calm and even, "which of my subjects do you intend to arrest this time?"
