Lord: My Shop Connects to Modern Times
Chapter 34 "Mutant Potatoes"
Lynn withdrew his gaze, sat back down at the table, and began to plan the next steps: defense, mining, possible gunpowder raw materials... and the intelligence that Lia had brought back.
There are many things to do, but at least we're not completely clueless.
Just then, an excited, almost hoarse shout came from outside the door, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of his staggering footsteps as he ran towards them:
"My lord! My lord! A miracle! A bountiful harvest! An incredible harvest!"
With a loud bang, the door was almost kicked open.
Joel rushed in, panting heavily from running so fast, his face flushed with extreme excitement, and even his usually hunched back straightened considerably.
He was clutching a yellowish-brown tuber, still covered in mud and soil, tightly in his hand; his fingers were turning white from the force of his grip.
"My lord! Those potatoes you planted last time! They seem to be ripe!"
"What?"
Joel placed the "potato," covered in fresh, damp mud, on Lynn's simple wooden table; its brownish-yellow skin glistened moistly under the oil lamp.
Lynn stared in astonishment at the thing on the table, which was as big as two adult fists. It was really hard to reconcile this thing with the potatoes from his previous life.
Is this a potato? Is it the kind of potato I know...?
The potatoes in front of him were not only much larger than the potatoes Lynn knew, but also, how much time had passed?
Lynn hadn't calculated the exact time, but she had definitely been here for less than a month.
The reason for planting potatoes in the past was not only because they are easy to grow and provide a good amount of food, but mainly because potatoes are the crop with the fastest growth cycle. Lynn personally confirmed this in the product description.
But the growth cycle of potatoes is about 40 days, so how come it's 10 days earlier?
"It has indeed matured." After careful observation, Lynn confirmed this fact.
After thinking for a moment, Lynn asked curiously, "But how did you know it was ripe? I don't recall telling you when it was ripe."
"Sir, a farmer discovered it by accident. This...this thing just popped out on its own."
Joel composed himself, calming down slightly. "We were doing our routine watering today and found that many of the seeds had sprouted on their own. Since these were seeds you gave us, and we don't really know how to use them, we brought them over to you."
"Come on! Take me to see this!" Lynn couldn't contain himself and immediately stood up.
When he arrived at the low-lying area that was once barren but is now covered with neat rows of ridges and fallen vines, even though he was mentally prepared, the sight before him still made him catch his breath slightly.
The setting sun cast a golden glow over the fields, and the air was filled with the earthy smell of freshly turned soil and the unique, fresh scent of broken plant roots. Along the field edges, baskets of freshly dug potatoes were piled up, resembling small yellow hills.
Each potato was plump and large, generally a size larger than the varieties Lynn had encountered in his previous life, and the skin color seemed to be darker, with a healthy, oily sheen.
Many busy citizens straightened up and, upon seeing Lynn, their faces immediately lit up with excited smiles that bordered on worship.
"The lord has arrived!"
"Sir! Look! It's all grain!"
"Thank you, Lord! We'll never go hungry again!"
The people had long heard of the miraculous crops given by their lord, and now they were filled with the joy of a bountiful harvest.
"I'm sorry, my lord, but I saw that too many had sprouted, and the field ridges were almost full, so I had someone collect and pack them together," Joel said, bowing his head as he followed behind.
"It's alright."
Lynn crouched down and examined it carefully.
Besides being generally larger in size, some potatoes also have slightly different shapes, are not so regular, and some have more obvious bulges on their surface.
He picked one up and cut it open with a knife, revealing pale yellow flesh inside, juicy and seemingly high in starch.
It seems that... apart from its size, growth cycle, and this unique outward growth pattern, there is nothing else unusual about it.
However, as a time traveler, Lynn did not completely let his guard down.
There must be a reason for this unusual occurrence. Such remarkable high productivity and rapid growth might seem like a miracle to people in this world, but for him, it required further confirmation.
"Go and call Elo and Herbert over for me," Lynn instructed one of the farmers.
The other party accepted the order and left. Soon after, Ero and Herbert arrived.
The two were busy with their own work, but when their eyes fell on the mountain of potatoes piled up on the edge of the field, all their fatigue and trivial matters were instantly forgotten, and their faces showed the same shock as Joel's at first.
"This...this is the potato you planted?" Ero's voice trembled slightly. He almost lunged at the basket, picked up a potato, and examined it closely, his fingers carefully touching its rough yet plump skin.
"This size...this weight...and this growth rate! Sir, are you sure it's been less than a month since it was planted?"
He had heard of this thing before; when Kay Fleming first sent him here, he had inquired about the local crops from the locals.
"That's true, but it's somewhat different from what I remember."
Lynn cut to the chase: "Mr. Herbert, I need you to help me verify whether this crop is poisonous and whether it is safe to eat."
Then Lynn said to Eero, "Mr. Eero, I need you to record detailed data on this batch of potatoes after confirming that they are non-toxic. This includes yield per plant, average weight, shape differences, and most importantly—continue to observe the plants remaining in the field to see their subsequent growth and withering cycles."
The two exchanged a glance: "Understood, Lord."
Herbert and Elro began examining the records, and soon Herbert had his results.
The old doctor conducted tests using both medicine and on a live animal, then came to Lynn and reported, "Sir, there's no problem. This potato is non-toxic."
Lynn's last bit of caution eased. He took a deep breath, the air, mixed with the scent of earth and plants, filling his chest.
"Okay." His voice rang out clearly: "Joel, organize the people and harvest all the potatoes! After harvesting, apart from the seed potatoes reserved, most of the rest will go into the public warehouse for everyone to buy freely..."
Lynn paused deliberately for a few seconds: "Also, set aside a small portion for the celebration tomorrow night!"
"A celebration?" Joel asked in confusion. He had lived most of his life and had heard of such things, but he had never heard of holding a celebration for harvesting grain.
Lynn glanced at Joel, then looked at the people in the fields who had done their part to make Grayrock Town a better place: "Yes, it's a celebration, a celebration of our victory on the battlefield today, and of our harvest!"
"Yes!" Seeing his lord's serious expression, Joel's voice was excited, and every wrinkle on his face smoothed out.
A cheer that could no longer be suppressed finally erupted from the crowd. The men raised their farm tools, the women embraced their children, and everyone's face was bathed in the glow of the setting sun, radiating smiles of near ecstasy.
