American homeless people, surviving in the city
Chapter 57 Recruiting Allies
The appearance of the system task was like the last straw that broke the camel's back, breaking through Lin Qi's psychological defenses.
After a few seconds of contemplation, he made a decision.
So, just as the group gathered around the bedside, immersed in despair and sorrow, Lynch suddenly grabbed Gleason's hand:
"Come, follow me."
Lynch took the lead, pushed through the crowd, and pulled Gleason to the outside of the illegal clinic.
"W-what's wrong?" Gleason was a little confused; the emotional rollercoaster had slowed his thinking.
"Tell me your story," Lynch said, gripping his hand tightly. "Perhaps I can help."
Gleeson's facial muscles were stiff, unable to make any expression.
He was a little surprised by Lynch's sudden question at this moment, and he didn't know what solution Lynch could have, but seeing a glimmer of hope, Gleason still spoke in a dry voice:
"What's there to tell in our story?"
"Tell me how you met," Lynch said, arms crossed. "I'm very interested in your past."
"Does this have anything to do with the 'method' you mentioned?" Gleason asked, puzzled.
"Of course it's related," Lin Qi said with absolute certainty.
"...Alright then." With that said, Gleason could only sigh helplessly and slowly begin his story:
"To talk about the friendship between the three of us, we have to go back to six years ago..."
Gleeson sighed, "The three of us were close friends in college, and we all had a dream of making games... So, after graduating from college, the three of us teamed up and started a small game studio."
"But while our ideals were lofty, reality dealt us a heavy blow. We invested a lot of money in the studio, but our first piece remained unsold."
"But we were not willing to let our dream just fade away. That work was the culmination of all our hard work... So, we turned down the apartment we had rented, and the three of us waited together in the studio without water or electricity for two weeks. Finally, a publisher was willing to buy our game, we got our first paycheck, and we achieved our first success."
"Later, after joining that big company, in order to save money to pay off student loans and to save up some start-up capital for making the game we dreamed of, we continued to share an apartment and drive the same car."
"Sometimes, when that guy Erwin brings his girlfriend home, the two of us will go and sleep in the car..."
"For so many years, we've never been apart." Gleeson clenched his fist. "And now... even death cannot separate us!"
Lynch offered no comment on these remarks, but simply looked into Gleason's eyes:
"Even so, are you really prepared to sell your car and live in the sewers?"
"I..." Gleeson opened his mouth, but couldn't utter a single word.
Lynch pressed on: "If you really continue down this path, when Tang En wakes up, will he really be happy for your choices?"
"What about your dreams? You've even sold your laptops, sinking deeper into the bottom of society. When will that game you dreamed of ever be made?"
"I...I...!"
Hearing Lynch's words, each one piercing to the heart, Gleason's eyes reddened.
He could no longer suppress his emotions; his hands trembled uncontrollably, veins bulging on the back of his hands, his lips moved, and the words that had been weighing on his heart surged forth:
"How could I not know these things! I understand everything! But, but...!"
Even so, even if I have to give up my dreams, even if I have to live a life of hardship on the streets forever, I will never give up on Tang En.
Hearing these sincere words, Lin Qi could no longer contain his emotions.
In fact, the moment he saw the system task, he had already made up his mind to help these three people.
Spending $1000 for a system task reward is a win-win situation no matter how you look at it.
However, the system's prompt did remind Lynch that a loyal ally would certainly provide valuable assistance in the future, but whether the person he saved was a loyal person was something Lynch had to judge for himself.
That's why he inquired about the past of the three programmers.
Now he is certain that these three men are honest and kind people, and helping them will not only be a matter of conscience, but will also surely bring him rewards in the future.
So, facing the excited Gleason, Lynch walked up to him and patted him on the shoulder:
"Forget it, there's no need for that. It's just a sum of money."
Under Gleason's bewildered gaze, Lynch pulled him back into the shady clinic and found the doctor:
"How much will the medical expenses be for that guy in the yellow plaid shirt? I'll pay for it."
"Use whatever medicine is needed, don't skimp, save him."
The room fell into a brief silence the moment Lin Qi finished speaking.
A few seconds later, before the doctor could even speak, Raul squeezed in, his eyes wide, as if he were seeing Lynch for the first time:
"Holy crap, boss, are you serious?"
He pointed at Lynch, then at Tang En on the hospital bed: "You, you're paying for him, are you serious?"
"I know you've made some money recently, but... spending so much money..."
Raul had some emotional intelligence, and swallowed the rest of his words.
"Do I look like I'm joking?" Lynch glared at him.
Hearing their conversation, Erwin, who had been standing by the bedside, quickly squeezed over. He looked exactly like Gleeson; if it weren't for his blue plaid shirt, Lynch wouldn't have been able to tell them apart.
He was more physically robust than Gleason, but even more emotional. He gripped Lynch's hand tightly, tears and snot streaming down his face.
"Mr. Lynch!" he sobbed, "If you could really save Tang En... I don't know how to thank you enough!"
Beside him, Gleason's hands trembled even more violently, the suppressed emotions overwhelming him, making his voice choke with emotion:
"But... Mr. Lin, Mr. Lin Qi..." He even used a respectful title, "I... we can't guarantee how long it will take to repay this money..."
"I never said you had to pay me back right away." Lin Qi waved his hand, interrupting him. "Just consider this a small investment from me."
"...Investment?" The two were somewhat puzzled.
"Gleason just told me about your dreams, and I hope you can achieve them too." Lynch smiled slightly. "So, I just want to help you out. This money is for your emergency, and I won't charge you interest."
"Once your dreams come true and you've made a fortune, you can pay me back then."
"Mr. Lynch..." The two of them were at a loss for words.
Lin Qi waved his hand dismissively: "As for now, treating Tang En's illness is the most important thing!"
