American homeless people, surviving in the city
Chapter 22 Official Trading
Standing behind Lin Qi and his companion was a young policeman, who appeared to be of Asian descent, with striking features and wearing what appeared to be a patrol officer's uniform.
Upon witnessing the bizarre scene of the two men dragging a corpse, the young policeman's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
It’s over.
In this situation, am I a little bit dead...?
Lin Qi broke out in a cold sweat. He quickly released his grip on the corpse's ankles, slowly raising his hands above his head. He then clearly and rapidly recited a short video he remembered seeing online, showing what people should do when stopped by police on the streets of America:
"Wait, sir, this is a misunderstanding. First of all, this was my personal action and has nothing to do with the lady next to me. Secondly, I wasn't disposing of a body..."
But the scene was different from what Lynch had imagined.
When the policeman saw the two men doing something around a corpse, he did not make any aggressive moves, and did not even draw his gun.
He didn't seem agitated, just genuinely astonished.
Even the person he looked at first didn't seem to be Lin Qi, who was obviously stronger.
Instead, it was Chen Yumo standing silently beside him?
"Heh... Hahaha..."
Just as Lin Qi was completely bewildered, Chen Yumo couldn't help but burst out laughing at his panicked expression.
Lin Qi looked at her with some confusion, but she ran briskly towards the policeman who also looked confused:
"Cousin, you're here?"
"Yu Mo, what are you doing..."
The policeman, who was called "cousin," did not react at all to Chen Yumo's approach, clearly indicating that the two had known each other for a long time, and the astonishment on his face was not fake at all.
Who would have thought that her cousin simply wanted to thank someone who had saved her life?
But after only a few minutes, when she returned, she saw her usually well-behaved and sensible cousin burying a body with a strange homeless man!
Is this a scene that should appear on Earth?
Seeing that the two of them were somewhat confused, Chen Yumo quickly leaned close to her cousin's ear and whispered something to him.
Then, she pulled the policeman over to Lin Qi and began to introduce him:
"Lin Qi, let me introduce you. This is my cousin, Chen Kelei (Clay), who insisted on coming with me because he was worried about my safety coming here alone!"
Having already learned that Lin Qi was the one who saved Chen Yumo, Chen Kelei quickly strode up to Lin Qi and warmly shook his hand:
"Mr. Lin, hello! I'm so sorry to have startled you! I'll have to punish myself with three drinks later!"
Chen Yumo also laughed from the side:
"It's also my fault for not explaining my cousin's identity beforehand."
As soon as Chen Kelei opened his mouth, Lin Qi could tell that although this cousin of Chen Yumo grew up in America, he was obviously deeply influenced by the culture of Dongda University, even saying something like punishing himself with three cups of wine.
He touched the tip of his nose somewhat awkwardly and nodded, "No, it's nothing. I was just overreacting..."
Chen Kelei laughed heartily:
"This is definitely not your problem, Mr. Chen. Your reaction is perfectly normal."
As he spoke, he seemed to recall some past events, and his tone became somewhat melancholy:
"I always thought that becoming a police officer was an honorable thing. But not long ago, when I put on the police uniform for the first time and walked on the street, I realized that the vast majority of people on the street regarded the police as tigers and avoided them like the plague."
"It's not their fault. Many of my colleagues are people I'm ashamed to associate with. They've done so many shady things behind the scenes, not to mention extortion, they've also accidentally injured or killed civilians quite a few times."
"So it's perfectly normal for you to be so excited and nervous!"
Chen Kelei's words were so polite that Lin Qi gradually relaxed.
Seeing that the two had already become acquainted, Chen Kelei took the opportunity to ask the question that had puzzled him the most:
"So... what are you two doing?"
It seems Chen Yumo hasn't had a chance to explain to him yet...
Lin Qi spoke frankly: "The deceased was a homeless man who lived in the same camp as me. I couldn't bear to see his body left to rot in the wilderness, so I thought of burying him. Chen Yumo was also helping me."
"Aren't the bodies of homeless people like this, which are not claimed by family members, usually handled by the city's forensic office?" Chen Kelei asked, somewhat puzzled.
Before Lin Qi could explain, Chen Yumo whispered in response:
"Lynch couldn't stand America's practice of ignoring the wishes of the dead and arbitrarily selling corpses."
Chen Kelei paused for a few seconds, then nodded in sudden understanding. He stepped forward and patted Lin Qi on the shoulder approvingly:
"I understand. Perhaps I haven't thought enough, or perhaps Mr. Lin has considered things more thoroughly."
"Indeed, once these bodies enter the city's forensic office morgue and remain unclaimed for an extended period, they are purchased by various colleges and professional corpse trafficking companies. And what they are used for afterward is nobody's knowledge..."
"I've always disapproved of this kind of behavior, but unfortunately it's legal in the United States. Moreover, compared to being taken away by the city's medical examiner's office and sold to legitimate medical schools and companies, those corpses picked up on the street and sold to the black market and certain unqualified companies may suffer even less dignified treatment."
"Therefore, even today, I am still somewhat accustomed to this operating logic of American society."
"Thinking about it that way, Mr. Lin, you're the one who thinks things through the most."
Lynch felt a little guilty from the praise. He didn't actually know that the United States had a department responsible for recovering unclaimed bodies; he simply wanted to give his fellow human beings a proper burial.
Unexpectedly, through a series of coincidences, I overheard another inside story about American society.
In the end, his actions were not problematic.
So he simply nodded silently and said in a deep voice:
"It would be best if you could understand. I was just following my conscience and wanted to do what I could."
Chen Kelei laughed, glanced at the increasingly dark sky around him, and said:
"In that case, let's not delay and bury him as soon as possible while no one is around."
"Although burying a body on the roadside violates many federal laws, such as illegal disposal of a corpse..."
"But there are no security cameras here anyway, so if we just bury a homeless person, no one will notice."
Lin Qi never expected that what was originally just his own whim would end up with two more helpers by sheer coincidence.
With the combined efforts of the three, the old vagrant's body was quickly buried in the small pit that Lin Qi had dug, covered with a layer of loose soil, and then covered with a layer of grass.
After finishing all this, Lynch placed the shovel beside the grave, silently closed his eyes, and paid his respects.
Heaven and earth are indifferent; even the dead cannot find peace. If I were to try to let them rest in peace, I would be violating federal law.
Old Tom, it wasn't the disease that ruined you, it was the world that ruined you!
Lin Qi sighed inwardly and reopened his eyes.
He saw the Chen siblings still standing not far away, and as if he understood something, he quickly walked over:
"I forgot to ask this all along. You came here for me, didn't you?"
"Of course." Chen Yumo smiled, pursing her lips. "I already told you, I specifically remembered this place, just to come back and find you!"
"I told you, I would definitely repay you!"
Chen Kelei strode forward and put his arm around Lin Qi's shoulder:
"I was terrified when Yu Mo told me what happened! Thank goodness Brother Lin was there, otherwise I can't even imagine what would have happened!"
"I just did what I could..." Lin Qi said somewhat embarrassedly.
"Don't be so polite! Come on, Brother Lin, I have to treat you to a meal! I said I'd punish myself with three drinks, and I'm not kidding!"
With some hesitation, Lin Qi got into the car that Chen Kelei had driven.
