Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 37 Scouts of Zhakou City
The man recoiled in terror upon hearing Lina's voice.
"Mr. Spy, after reflecting on your actions for a night, is there anything you want to tell me?" Lina asked with a smile.
The man nodded frantically, as if he had seen a savior.
"I've told you everything, I've told you everything, please let me go!"
"Okay, then tell me, where did you come from?"
"Iron Bay Federation...Gateway City".
Gate City, a city-state bordering the Iron Bay Federation and the Kingdom of New Augustus, once prospered due to trade with the Kingdom of New Augustus. However, thirteen years have passed since the Demon Tide receded, and Gate City has lost its key position as a transportation hub between the two countries. It is unknown what will become of it.
The man's subsequent sighs and lamentations answered all his questions.
"The old city lord's family has lost power. His entire system of rules was based on doing business with the kingdom. With the arrival of the demonic tide... it's all over."
"Some went bankrupt, some were liquidated, and many people left Zhakou City directly. The old city lord invested all the assets he had accumulated in the city's construction, hoping to create new industries, but he failed."
"Zhakou City has been declining year by year, and the only reason it can still exist is because of the prestige of the old city lord."
"And this year is completely over. The old city lord is dead, and his son has taken over. None of his subordinates are satisfied with him. Among them, the three most powerful managers joined forces with their subordinates to rebel and directly killed the city lord's son and wife in the city lord's mansion."
"The entire Zhakou City is now in complete chaos. All the members of the old city lord's faction have fled in the chaos, fearing being purged. Some ordinary people have also been affected and have fled with their families."
"Because the cities in other directions have already been informed by these three traitors that they can accept ordinary civilians, but they will definitely not accept the legacy of old city lords like us. So we have no choice but to risk crossing the border to come here to make a living."
Lina narrowed her eyes and gave a cold smile.
"Mr. Spy, you're still being naughty. Your so-called 'seeking a way out' means that I rescued you from the monster yesterday, and then you tried to kill me?"
The spy's face showed a look of fear.
"I didn't mean to, I was just too scared. When I saw you commanding those monsters, I thought you were..."
"What do you think I am...? Tell me!"
The man lowered his head, not daring to speak.
"You think I'm a lost soul, a cult member, right?"
Lina took the rope from the man's hand. The modified rotten dog, drooling and with its huge mouth wide open, was held by Lina's hand, eager to try, and kept making low growls.
"Quiet!"
Lina tightened the chains on the rotten dog, scolded it, and then turned her gaze to the man.
"I'll ask you one last time, who sent you? If you explain yourself clearly, I might give you a quick death."
"If you keep lying to me like this, I'll let this guy bite your flesh off piece by piece!"
The man lowered his head, his shoulders trembling slightly, seemingly also frightened by the scene she described.
After a long pause, he finally stammered out the whole truth.
"She is the city lord's daughter, the eldest daughter of Zhakou City. The eldest daughter also has a claim to Zhakou City, so those three traitors have been sending people to hunt us down."
"To escape persecution, the young lady wanted to cross this polluted land to seek political asylum in the kingdom's capital. I was sent out by her to find the way. I'm not a spy, I'm a scout."
Now everything is clear.
Lina looked enlightened, a hint of playful contemplation flashing across her face.
However, before thinking about her own affairs, she hadn't forgotten to fulfill her promise to this man.
"Mr. Spy, I won't forget what I promised you. I'll give you a quick death, right?"
Before she finished speaking, a sharp scalpel suddenly shot out from her sleeve, flying straight towards the man and accurately piercing his left eye socket. It seemed to have penetrated into a key area of his brain, instantly causing him to lose consciousness and his entire body to stop functioning.
The man died almost instantly, before he could even react.
We could also assume he was happy, since he got what he deserved.
After dealing with all of this, Lina hummed a little tune and released the modified rotten dog, letting it rush to a corner and feast on the corpse.
Lina took a step back and closed the dungeon's iron door.
Only the little elf frowned, seemingly trying to read Lina's mind.
"I dare say, there are definitely new torturous ideas coming out of your twisted brain."
Lina snapped her fingers, a smug smile spreading across her face.
"You're right, I do have a new idea."
As she spoke, she pulled a smooth human skin mask from her pocket. The mask's height and color changed constantly with the light, seemingly able to simulate any face at will.
Staring at the human skin mask, she revealed her plan.
"What if... I went and pretended to be a refugee from Gate City, seeking refuge with the chief of River Bend Fortress?"
…………
……
The words are divided into two parts.
On the other side, Edmund had just put down his longbow. Fortunately, he was a very composed person. If someone had been more timid, they might have been trembling with fear and unable to hold the bow steady when they saw that enormous creature descend upon the top of River Bend.
The griffin is the totem of the Conaron family.
This is not a spiritual totem, but a real, existing creature.
Just over a decade ago, this River Bend Fort housed two griffins, a male and a female, legendary creatures that shared life and death with their family.
But griffins are legendary creatures that place great importance on honor, or rather, all legendary creatures possess considerable intelligence; they understand what human behavior means.
When Count Conalon fled the city with his private army, abandoning all honor, the two griffins took flight and disappeared without a trace.
Everyone thought that the two legendary creatures had completely abandoned the Conaron family, but no one expected that thirteen years later, one of them would fly back.
Who is it for?
Was it for Vittorio?
This question was on everyone's mind, and Edmund was no exception.
But this did not stop Edmund from raising his bow and arrow, ready to launch an attack at any moment.
Because if such a behemoth were to turn on them, it would be a devastating blow to the defenseless survivor camp.
He had to be extremely vigilant; he couldn't assume that this thing was friendly.
Fortunately, it only came to observe, and didn't do anything extra. It just looked around and then flew away.
Edmund breathed a sigh of relief as the griffin flew away.
But then he thought of something else, and his heart jumped again.
"Vittorio... my lord, have you found him?"
The person standing nearby shook their head in embarrassment.
"no."
Edmund slammed his bow down, unusually lashing out at the man.
"Go look again! Do I have to tell you what to do? Swim into any water you can, store air in the containers, and swim as far as you can. Even if he's dead, bring me his body out!"
His subordinates had never seen Edmund lose his temper like this before. Even in the most difficult times, he had never raised his voice, but today was an exception.
It's clear that Edmund was extremely agitated and panicked.
In response, the subordinate could only reply with a submissive tone.
"Lord Tieyan, all those who can swim have been sent over, and we are working hard."
Edmund realized his lapse in composure, but he couldn't control himself and could only sigh wearily.
"Vittorio... I really shouldn't have agreed to let you take this risk."
Edmund rubbed his temples in exasperation.
Just as he was wondering what to do, a sound suddenly came from not far away.
"Found him! We've found Lord Vittorio!"
