Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 20 Burning the Monster
Vittorio stood atop the city wall, gazing at the scene before him, utterly awestruck.
Of the two young men who carried out the decoy plan, one was left forever on the bridge, sacrificing his life to kill twenty monsters.
But the monsters didn't feel fear at all, or rather, they didn't feel fear.
The monsters charged fearlessly toward the castle.
Vittorio frowned.
"I'm afraid all the small magical beasts on the south bank are gathering here."
"That must be the case, otherwise there wouldn't be so many magical beasts."
Beside Vittorio, another aged, worried voice echoed his sentiments.
That's old Mor, the one who publicly contradicted Vittorio at the meeting.
But now is not the time for infighting; the two are standing together to discuss "Akame."
The reason I discussed this with old Moore was because old Moore had seen "Red Eyes".
"When I was young, there was a night of red eyes, but at that time the River Bend had not yet fallen, and there were not so many fissures. The security was still pretty good."
"On the night Akame descended, we all hid, closed our doors and windows, and had able-bodied men patrol the outskirts of the town."
"Although there were small groups of monsters attacking, they did not cause any major damage."
Vittorio asked a crucial question.
"How long did the last instance of Akame last?"
"I was just about to address that issue. About two hours ago, I noticed that red eyes are an occasional phenomenon and don't seem likely to last long."
Vittorio looked at the soldiers standing guard below the castle.
"So all you need to do is hold on for two hours."
"Maybe," old Moore said, unsure.
Just as the two were talking, the monsters' attack reached its climax, and their fearless charge seemed to have really worked.
This canyon is about 50 meters wide and about 5 meters high. The height of 5 meters is roughly the height of three adult men standing on top of each other.
Of course, this isn't a particularly large canyon, but crossing it is no easy feat.
The monsters initially tried to rush directly to the other side of the canyon, but the jump distance was insufficient, and many monsters fell to the bottom of the canyon. Due to the 5-meter drop, many of these monsters were injured and lay groaning at the bottom.
But this only applies to the first batch of monsters that fell; the second and third batches were different.
With the first group acting as human cushions, they didn't die quickly, but instead crawled desperately toward the cliff on the other side of the castle.
As these monsters gathered in greater numbers, they actually formed a triangular pile of corpses at the bottom of the canyon.
To put it another way, it's like a swarm of ants desperately trying to climb to the top of a perfectly smooth wall at a 90-degree angle. They can't climb up on their own feet; they can only rely on the bodies of their companions.
This triangular pile of corpses forms a natural sloping staircase, meaning that these monsters have discovered the path to the castle, and it's only a matter of time before they reach the top of the canyon.
Everyone watched this scene with grim faces.
Edmund dipped his arrow into the prepared resin, lit it with a torch, and then shot the arrow.
The rocket struck a rotting dog squarely between the eyebrows, but only dipped the tip in tree resin and ignited it. The fire was extinguished instantly once the tip penetrated the dog's body.
Edmund hesitated for a moment, then decisively gave the order.
"Pour in half the resin and ignite it with a rocket!"
The crowd agreed and poured out the cans of resin. Once the resin had been mostly spilled, Edmund fired a lit rocket.
In an instant, flames spread from where the rockets had been fired, and the fat and fur on the monster's body burned, emitting thick smoke, black smoke, and a foul odor.
The fire wall was indeed effective. The fearless charge of those magical beasts was stopped by the fire wall, and many of them howled and burned as they rolled and fell from the top.
Edmondo hoped these monsters would wisely retreat, but if they had reason, they wouldn't be monsters.
Although the flames greatly hampered their movements, they did not give up their assault; instead, they became even more frenzied!
Even though the monsters in front were engulfed in flames, the monsters behind continued to launch attacks relentlessly.
At this moment, Vittorio stood atop the city wall, looking down.
"How many have there been already? Are these magical beasts endless?"
Old Mo's expression was also very solemn, but as expected of someone who was very sensitive to numbers, he was able to accurately state the number of monsters that had entered the battle even in such a chaotic situation.
"There are eighty-six in total, not counting the twenty who just fell to their deaths."
Vittorio breathed a sigh of relief. Only eighty-odd? But from his perspective, it seemed like an endless tide.
The flames burned for about 20 minutes, and as time passed, they began to gradually diminish.
Because the amount of grease and fur is limited, once the burning materials are fully combusted, they turn into hard charcoal blocks, creating a place that is almost a high-temperature hell without open flames.
As the first batch of corpses turned to charcoal, the second wave of monsters launched another attack, but this time the resin tactic failed.
First, the already burning corpses were too hot, and the continuous pungent smoke prevented the soldiers from getting too close.
Secondly, the materials used in the first fire attack were the corpses of monsters that had died at the bottom of the canyon. Once these corpses were charred, they were no longer suitable as fuel. Even if resin was poured on them, they could not be ignited instantly like before.
Finally, the charred corpses actually hardened, unlike newly deceased corpses which would sink or slide down.
If one can withstand the high temperatures emanating from these corpses, they actually become an excellent path for attack.
In short, Warcraft realized that this was an excellent opportunity to attack and launched another charge.
Fortunately, the soldiers still held the advantage of the terrain, attacking from higher ground and repeatedly repelling the monsters that tried to charge upwards.
But it's only a matter of time before Warcraft reaches the top.
Vittorio stood atop the city wall without any panic, and continued to question old Mor.
"How many are there?"
"Two hundred and thirty-five."
"That's about it."
Vittorio observed that the monsters had formed a path to the summit, and two or three had already successfully reached the top via that path.
Next, the monsters behind will launch a frenzied attack along that path, and then it will be time for close combat.
At that time, the madness that Akame brings to the monsters and the visual impairment caused by the darkness will become apparent.
At that time, the survivors will be injured.
This no longer aligns with Vittorio's tactical vision.
So it's time to retreat.
Thinking of this, Vittorio blew his horn with all his might, the signal he had agreed upon with Edmund and the others.
When the soldiers by the canyon were sweating profusely from the heat, hearing this sound was like hearing heavenly music.
Edmund gave the order.
"Those on both sides, retreat in formation, then those in the middle, and finally, Isolde and I will lead the rearguard!"
"Be quick! Don't panic!"
Under the cover of night, the survivors quickly retreated into the castle.
At this point, approximately ninety minutes had passed.
