Chapter 7 Ghouls
On this continent, adventures come with great risks but also high rewards, so most adventurers need ways to relax their tense nerves.
Aside from the usual drinks and food, there's also the sex industry, where countless women, men, and even people of other races use their bodies to please customers in exchange for money.
Enchanting crystals are items specifically designed to enhance the sensual experience during services. Their effect is to give the user a special scent, making them exceptionally "seductive."
Although swallowing a whole piece is quite rare, it is enough to suggest that the deceased may have been entertaining a big client before his death, and now Roland has benefited from it.
"The concentration is very high. Although some of it has been digested, the rest can be ground into powder and used seven or eight times," Austin said, marveling at the tiny crystal in his hand. "You're lucky. This thing is worth at least 30 silver coins on the black market."
"That's really good." Roland caught the psychedelic crystal that Austin threw back and casually stuffed it into his bag.
He has spent some money over the past few days, and with the original owner's memories and knowledge, he has roughly figured out the price level here.
The exchange rate between gold, silver, and copper is one to one hundred, though it may fluctuate depending on the degree of wear and tear on the currency.
A strong laborer could earn about one silver coin a day, which was barely enough to support a family of three for two days.
However, all of that is in the past. Now, due to the war, the prices of food, lodging, and medicine are rising rapidly. One silver coin can only be exchanged for a few black breads at most.
Looking at it this way, the psychedelic crystal worth 30 silver coins is already a pretty good return. This mission only yielded 1 gold coin. Sure enough, things related to the extraordinary are the fastest way to make money.
"How was the mission?" Austin smiled and pointed to the corpse on the ground. "Although we're not always this lucky, there are always some little surprises."
Roland nodded. He had only intended to choose a simple task to complete the story, so this kind of reward was truly unexpected.
Unfortunately, such good things are rare.
"These past few days, the carriages have been transporting corpses about three to five times a day, but only the morning batch is searched the least thoroughly," Austin told Roland. "I've inquired, and it's said that the guards patrolling at this time of day aren't short of money, so they just hastily collect the bodies."
Austin was absolutely right. On Roland's first day at the Blessed Cemetery, he gained nothing except the Enchanting Crystal he had found at the beginning. The only other thing was that the experienced Austin pulled out a dull gold coin from his boot.
The rest of the time, they stayed in the cabin, keeping warm by the campfire, and occasionally listened to the experienced Austin recount some of his experiences.
……
Winter days are incredibly short, like a sigh from the gods.
Amidst the busy looting and leisurely rest, the last rays of the setting sun were quickly swallowed by the distant mountains, and a cold night descended upon the cemetery.
The wind howled, pounding against the thin doors of the wooden cabin. The cold air seeping in through the cracks in the windows ruffled Roland's hair, and even the campfire began to flicker.
Left with no other choice, he got up and used straw to fill and seal the gaps.
Back by the fire, Austin joked, "You'll get used to it. Winter in Broken Rock Town always comes and goes quickly. Before long, you'll be able to see women showing off their snow-white thighs again."
After a full day, the group had become much more familiar with each other and could make some harmless jokes, but they all adhered to the cautious rules of adventurers and avoided any topics that might cause conflict.
However, as night fell, the atmosphere inside the cabin became somewhat heavy. After all, it was some distance from the town lights and patrols, and there was still a chance of danger.
"Let's take turns keeping watch," Austin's voice was particularly clear amidst the crackling of the firewood. "I'll go first, Nolan, you're second, and Seth is last."
"no problem."
That's what they said, but Roland didn't fall asleep until late at night. Although he was quite exhausted, he still couldn't fall asleep in the unsettling environment.
He still needs some time to adjust to the pace of his adventurous lifestyle.
dong dong...
The faint sound of footsteps came from afar, startling Roland, who was leaning against the wall with his eyes closed. He saw Austin already standing by the window, staring at the monster in the distance.
"You're here?"
Austin nodded slightly, a hint of surprise in his voice: "There seem to be quite a few today. Is it because we've been receiving more and more corpses lately?"
Roland frowned, leaned closer to the window, and glanced outside.
In the dim moonlight, a dozen twisted humanoid monsters were gradually approaching, their bluish-gray skin clinging to their bones, their twisted joints extending into slender claws, their nails filled with blackish-red filth.
A scarlet tongue protruded from between sharp teeth, hanging all the way down to its neck. Its entire body was wrapped in only a few tattered strips of cloth, and it made low, gurgling noises from its throat, like the sound of greedily swallowing.
The straw stuffed into the window cracks had fallen off at some point, and a nauseatingly sweet smell of rotting flesh and old grave soil blew in with the cold wind, like a spreading tide filling the nostrils.
Ghoul.
The origins of this monster can be traced back to the abyss, where it has long sought fresh humanoid flesh and blood, roaming tirelessly in the night.
"Should we light it?" Roland asked softly.
The dwarf Seth had already drawn his dagger and quietly pressed it against the wooden door, waiting to make a decision so he could quickly ignite the prepared pile of firewood.
"No," Austin shook his head. "The wind is too strong today. The fire will go out quickly if we light it. It's safer to just throw the body away."
Although ghouls are very low-level monsters, a large number of them can be very troublesome, and it would be quite difficult for the three of them to deal with them.
No one objected to the suggestion of disposing of the corpses. Seth opened the cellar entrance in the corner of the cabin and quickly carried out several corpses disguised as human figures, but actually filled with the flesh and blood of wild animals.
They certainly wouldn't actually throw the bodies out of the cemetery; that would not only violate the association's regulations but could also provoke dissatisfaction from some orthodox churches.
Austin has been here for a long time and has already honed his skills specifically for dealing with ghouls.
He took out a bottle of pale red potion and splashed it on the flesh and blood. The flesh and blood, which had already turned yellow and rotten, immediately began to regenerate, not only becoming bright red but also full of "human scent".
"This is a life-giving potion," Austin explained. "A mage's invention that can coat other flesh with human aura, which can likely deceive ghouls."
Roland nodded. Although ghouls only like to devour humanoid creatures, they have almost no intelligence, so this method is indeed very suitable.
However, when Seth threw the "fresh humanoid flesh" out through the open window, the bluish-gray ghouls only paused for a moment before heading straight for the small mound where they had buried the corpses during the day.
"Oh no!"
As Austin watched the ghouls at the top begin to dig at the soil, his tone grew heavier: "This tactic isn't working. It seems these ghouls are different from the previous ones."
"What do you mean?" Roland asked, bewildered.
"That means we're in trouble."
