Chapter 14 Power
thump—
thump—
Two deep, resonant bells rang out from the church not far away, heralding the start of a new day and urging people to continue their hard work.
The bright sunlight pierced through the clouds and fell on the vast plains, highlighting the colorful dewdrops on the trees and plants.
Flocks of birds took flight from the sparse forest, dropping their light feathers that swirled along the rising smoke before finally landing on Seth's shoulder.
"Damn it!"
Seth brushed the feather away with his hand, but accidentally got it on his head. He could only mutter a curse under his breath before gently removing it.
"Compared to death, it's quite lucky."
Roland sat in the wicker chair, watching Seth's comical antics, and chuckled softly.
Half an hour had passed since they left the cemetery. Luca led Austin away, and the mysterious believer of the true god arrived with only his oppressive aura.
No one cared about the two low-level adventurers in the cemetery, and they had no reason to stay there any longer, so they simply abandoned their mission to guard the cemetery.
However, on Seth's advice, they did not return directly to the town, but instead stayed at a nearby farm.
This was undoubtedly the right choice, because in less than half an hour they had been there, they saw at least twenty red-robed guards on horseback speeding toward the cemetery.
"This is a complicated matter," Seth said, sitting on the ground and taking a sip of water. "We'd better keep a low profile. Those people in the Church of the True God are all lunatics."
Roland nodded.
According to the original owner's memories, the Church of the Righteous God was not a benevolent entity in this world, and it had a considerable number of radical believers.
Regardless of whether you are related to the necromancer, if you appear at the center of the incident, you will inevitably be arrested and interrogated.
Their timely escape has given them room to maneuver.
As adventurers, they only need to return to the guild and explain the situation; someone there will naturally solve the problem.
After all, the association usually sides with the adventurers, and this commission was largely due to a problem with the intelligence.
Who would have thought that a simple task of guarding a cemetery would involve a necromancer who is a formal professional?
The biggest problem right now is...
Roland raised his wrist and saw a gray-black line moving continuously on his skin, seeping deeper and deeper into it.
This was the last "gift" Luca left for him: if the spirits failed to kill Roland, he would personally come to end his life.
“Tracking mark,” Seth glanced at the pattern and sighed slightly, “Looks like you’ve really offended Luca this time.”
"It's nothing serious," Roland said calmly, withdrawing his hand. "There are many ways to remove this mark, but there will be a price to pay."
Seth nodded, then sighed, "What a pity. We had several chances to kill Austin; his corpse would have yielded considerable profits."
These days, he has personally witnessed Austin looting a lot of valuables from the corpses, at least five gold coins!
Roland smiled and said, "It's already lucky to have survived. There's no need to ask for too much."
That's what he said, but he knew very well that Austin seemed to have some close connection with Luca, and killing him would cut off the trail to Luca.
Now that Austin has escaped, if he returns to the town and reports the situation, he can at least cause some trouble for Luca.
A low-level adventurer who would be carried away by a necromancer while being hunted must have some value.
Seth didn't understand his thoughts, but simply nodded silently, then turned his gaze to the road outside to see if anyone was still paying attention.
Roland, meanwhile, looked down to examine the injuries he had sustained in the battle.
There are countless abrasions on the skin, but they are all minor problems that heal on their own.
The only slightly troublesome thing is the impact from the two attacks on Luca; his internal organs seem to have been affected, and he occasionally experiences some pain when moving.
The most critical issue is the soreness in my right arm.
Repeated sword swings and combat techniques have taken a toll on this already weak body, potentially tearing ligaments and rendering it unable to even grip a longsword properly.
Before returning to the association, I need to find a place to heal my wounds.
Thinking of this, Roland's heart stirred slightly, and he said to Seth, who was already starting to doze off, "I'd like to ask about the basic situation in the town."
Seth snapped out of his daze, glanced at him in surprise, and blinked. "What do you mean? Didn't you already join the association?"
"I'm not asking about things to watch out for during adventures, but rather about the town," Roland said softly. "I haven't been here long, so I need you to give me a brief overview of what I should be careful of."
Upon hearing this, Seth immediately understood.
After thinking for a moment, he slowly said, "Actually, there are many things to pay attention to, but the most crucial ones are the three forces. All the resources in the town are more or less connected with them."
"First, the Adventurers' Guild. You know what this is without me having to say it. Anyone involved with extraordinary resources, whether they are adventurers or merchants, has to deal with it."
"The current president of the association is Lord Scarface Hogg, a barbarian professional with a rather domineering style, who is often willing to stand up for us adventurers."
"The second is the Church of the True God, which mainly consists of the Church of Knowledge, the Church of Balance, and the Church of the Sun. Each of them has different beliefs and styles."
"For us adventurers, the church we probably come into contact with the most is the Church of the Sun. There are quite a few lunatics in there, including that guy just now... You know what I mean without me saying it. In short, don't get involved with them."
"Finally, there's the Town Hall, which is ostensibly the kingdom's law enforcement agency. However, due to the war, all the elite troops with any real strength have been transferred away, so it's practically negligible now."
Seth's account was quite detailed, prompting Roland to nod slightly, yet a question arose in his mind: "How long have you lived here? You seem very familiar with this place."
"Hehe..." The short Seth jumped onto the straw beside him, his voice tinged with bitterness, "If it weren't for my brother, I wouldn't know so much."
"Your brother?"
"He was a dwarf," Seth said, his voice slightly lowered as if he had just thought of something, "He adopted me, which is why I'm still alive today."
A dwarf adopted a gnome?
Roland raised an eyebrow slightly, understanding why Seth lacked the innate sense of humor inherent in his race, but did not press the matter further.
Everyone has their own story, and there are many worth recording, but not every story can be passed down forever.
Just like his relationship with Seth, although it seems more intimate now, it still maintains a proper distance and has not crossed that line.
In the world of adventure, you never know that today's savior might become tomorrow's enemy.
However, if you talk too much, it's easy to expose your weaknesses.
Seemingly realizing this, Seth turned his gaze away and calmly pointed to the road in the distance: "It looks like everything's fine now, shall we go back?"
"No problem, do you want to come to the association with me?"
"No, I'm going to make some more arrows."
"Then... goodbye."
"Goodbye."
