Chapter 85 The Newborn Monkey Is Not Afraid of the Fox
Seeing the fox staring intently at the frozen peach, the little monkey waved its hand in front of the fox's eyes and said, "You have a good eye. That peach is indeed the most special one I have."
"It's just that it wasn't brewed well, and since Father and the winemaker still have some use for it, we can't let you try it."
"Not brewed well?" the fox repeated.
"you do not say."
Whether the monkey was simply incapable of understanding the fox's expressions, or the little monkey was just too oblivious, it didn't notice anything amiss and, right in front of the fox, began to chatter animatedly:
"The winemaker said that these peaches must have been bathed in the legendary moonlight. After being frozen by the cold air, the flesh fermented naturally inside, thus forming this natural wine."
"It's just that the fermentation time was too short. The wine tastes sweet at first, but it has a strong aftereffect. I only had a small sip and I slept for three days and three nights."
The fox just stared at it without saying a word.
"Besides, although it tastes alright, it lacks the natural fragrance of peaches. The most important thing in making fruit wine is to preserve the fruit aroma. If the fruit aroma is gone, can it still be called fruit wine? This is the most crucial step!" The little monkey's eyes lit up when he talked about wine. He spoke logically and clearly, and seemed to really know about wine. He wasn't lying.
The fox, however, wished it didn't understand so much.
"Also, although this wine can nourish the body, it was bathed in moonlight by chance and has not undergone any other neutralization process. It is too cold in nature, and those who drink it for the first time or are too young may not be able to handle it."
"But that's what the old man said. I didn't really feel anything. Maybe I just didn't drink enough."
"Where did you pick these peaches? Maybe they belong to someone else. It's not that they don't know how to make wine, but they were just halfway through when you stole them." The fox didn't want to reveal its identity, so it probed indirectly.
"Hehe, they must be unclaimed." The little monkey boasted as it recounted its peach-stealing experience. "You don't know, although there are many fruits in the valley, we've been here for hundreds of years and have tried every single one."
"The other monkeys don't want to leave the mountain and stay in this valley, not to mention the little monkeys, who aren't even allowed to leave the valley. But I just want to brew new wine, so I always sneak out, but my father always finds out and almost beats me to death."
"Monkey King, are you getting old? If your strength isn't up to par, send someone stronger," the fox thought to himself.
The little monkey, unaware of the fox's thoughts, said excitedly, "Just a few days ago, on a whim, I ventured into the dense forest below the cliff. I got lost and wandered for many days until I finally reached a place with many people. I found a large house, and then..."
"The fox has been to that big house you mentioned. Did you see it? There's a small room inside with a fox statue."
The little monkey's eyes lit up: "Huh? Could that be yours...?"
Under the fox's expectant gaze, Shuai Shuai changed the subject again, continuing, "Is it from your kind?"
"It's definitely not yours. I looked at that statue carefully; it's missing a tail and is much thinner than you."
The fox paused, its teeth itching with anger. It was currently molting, its coat covered in thick, fluffy red down, making it round and fuzzy.
"That's a fox! Foxes look a bit fatter after they molt!"
"But when I went to check again later, there were several guys in the room with black smoke coming out of them. They looked really fierce, so I didn't dare go in. Those probably aren't your friends, right? If you know that fox, remember to tell it to be careful." The little monkey said earnestly.
"Hey, you can see those rampant ghosts?"
The little monkey scratched its head, looking bewildered: "They're just standing there, what's there to miss?"
It walked up to the frozen peach, stroked its skin, and hesitated, "Could you ask that fox to give me this peach? There was another one before, but the old winemaker and my father took it to study it, and they only gave me a tiny sip. I'm counting on this peach to brew a unique and excellent wine!"
"It's alright. Of all the foxes I know, that fox is the most generous. There are so many peaches on the tree, giving you one is definitely no problem." The fox's voice sounded like it was being squeezed out of its throat.
"That's great!" The little monkey jumped up and down, then came over to add, "When are you going to bring it over too? I can teach it how to fix the shortcomings of this frozen peach wine and make it taste even better."
"Okay, you wait, it's definitely eager to see you."
"Oh dear, after all that talk, come and try my wine!" The little monkey walked inside.
The ground was covered with a thick layer of grass, and many pottery jars stood in the back, all sealed with mud, which was somewhat similar to how people preserve things.
The little monkey stepped on the earthenware pots below, picked up a small pot from the front, and instead of opening it immediately, it proudly waved it around in front of the fox.
"This is a pottery jar that someone used. Don't let its small size fool you; it's older than me."
"Have you seen anyone?"
"My father has seen them, and the old man has seen them even more, but now very few people come to the valley. Of all these little monkeys, I'm the only one who has seen them before."
The little monkey opened the wine seal, and a faint yet lingering fruity aroma eagerly wafted out of the jar, the fragrance almost tangible. The little monkey then picked up a gourd from the side, gently twisted it, and broke it into two ladles.
Amber-colored liquor flowed from the mouth of the jar and poured into a ladle, clear and bright.
The little monkey handed over the gourd ladle and looked at the fox with anticipation.
The fox took it and licked a small piece.
Upon tasting, the wine first has a cool sensation, a coolness more gentle than that of frozen peach. Then, a variety of fruit flavors surge forth. This wine must be made from many different fruits, yet it doesn't feel chaotic; instead, each flavor complements the others, making each fruit aroma even more pronounced. As the wine flows down the throat, the fruity aroma rises upwards, and if one were to speak now, the mouth would be filled with the fragrance of fruit.
The little monkey stared at it, its eyes unblinking: "How was it?"
The fox tucked the tip of its tail towards its paws, its tone flat: "It's alright."
"Yay!" The little monkey jumped up and cheered, then came back over. "Actually, I was quite unsure of myself. I made a lot of mistakes with this wine. I was too excited when I scooped it out and accidentally mixed in some fruit pulp."
Using the light seeping in from the cave entrance, the fox could see some flocculent matter floating in the wine, which should be fruit residue.
"Moreover, all the tree cavities of those ancient trees in the valley were occupied, and they wouldn't let me use them, so I could only find a small tree at random..."
Rather than reflecting on my actions, Fox felt it was more like showing off.
The fox remained silent. He had originally planned to find out the secret recipe for brewing wine next time he came, and then teach the little monkey a lesson. But now it seemed that he should give it a good beating first.
