Chapter 79 Not One Missed
The night was as dark as ink, enveloping the mountain god temple. The temple was empty, but the incense on the altar burned brightly.
Ding Chang worked silently in the courtyard. First, it placed all the prayer cushions from the temple in the courtyard, and then it carried out the offering tables and pieced them together to form simple seating arrangements.
Jie Chang drew a ghost-headed knife from behind him, slowly stroking the blade. Where his fingers touched, blood glints appeared. He weighed the knife in the moonlight, still unsatisfied. He then gathered malevolent energy in his palm, rubbing it back and forth along the blade before placing it neatly in the center of the offering table.
After taking a couple of glances, it still didn't feel it was imposing enough, so it picked up the knife again and changed its posture.
"The people are here." Ding Chang had finished his work sometime earlier, his gaze fixed on the knife, and said in a low voice.
Jie Chang immediately put aside his thoughts, looked around, and saw that the food and incense offered by the villagers had been neatly arranged. Looking down the mountain, he saw Mi Chang walking in front, followed by a string of dark figures of varying heights and builds, walking in unison towards the mountain god temple.
Jie Chang simply slung his knife over his shoulder and strode forward. "Good, good, well done!"
"It's all thanks to the boss. He gave me very clear instructions, so I naturally handled everything properly, leaving nothing out. They're all here." The fox smiled and pointed behind him.
The bandit's gaze bypassed the fox, and after counting the number of people, its smile widened. It raised its hand to lead the way into the courtyard, its voice booming, "Brothers, please come in. It's a simple place, please don't mind. From now on, we're all family."
The wandering spirits didn't stand on ceremony; they all walked in, found a place to sit, and seven or eight pairs of eyes stared at the calamity.
Jie Chang was somewhat annoyed, thinking to himself, "Fine, he's already putting on airs as soon as he arrives."
It grinned maliciously, strode to the offering table, plopped down, and slammed the knife on its shoulder onto the table with a bang.
This knife had been with it for decades, refined day and night by malevolent energy, almost solidifying into a tangible form. It proudly raised its eyes to look at the ghosts, waiting for them to show awe.
The wandering spirits lowered their heads, avoiding eye contact. Only then did Jie Chang nod in satisfaction and wave to Ding Chang.
Ding Chang silently got up and poured wine for everyone. When he poured the wine for the fox, he paused and exchanged a silent glance with the fox.
The fox's heart stirred, and he stroked the wine cup.
The robber, oblivious to what was happening, simply picked up his bowl and said, "Come on, brothers, drink this bowl! From now on, we'll share both good times and bad!"
"Damn it!" The crowd responded in unison, their voices becoming one.
Jie Chang took a deep sniff.
All the ghosts took a sniff as well.
The robber put down the bowl.
All the ghosts put down their bowls.
Jie Chang wiped his mouth.
All the ghosts joined in...
The calamity paused, its gaze sweeping over the ghosts.
The pale moonlight shone on those expressionless faces. They stared straight at me, with the same eyes, the same expression, the same angle; their appearances were different, but their movements were exactly the same.
A chill suddenly ran down the back of the robber, who gripped its knife tightly and shouted, "What the hell are you doing!"
As soon as the words were spoken, the wandering spirits all broke into smiles, laughing so freely that their gums were showing.
Jie Chang suddenly realized that the incense smoke filling the air was not dispersing into the bodies of each wandering god, but instead drifting towards Mi Chang.
"Rampant!"
Before its eyes, the thin, hunchbacked body disappeared, replaced by a red fox with a bushy tail that swayed and revealed several familiar ghost faces through its fur.
"The fox said, not one is missing, they're all here."
"Ahhhhh—"
It wasn't the calamity demons shouting, but the newly arrived wandering spirits, who, without changing their expressions, let out stiff screams and pretended to scatter and flee.
Their movements remained perfectly synchronized.
Jie Chang's face was ashen, his hands gripping his knife, staring intently at the fox: "You damn vixen, how dare you play me!"
Before it could move, Ding Chang leaped up, a hammer appearing in his hand, and several black, swirling nails shot straight at the fox's face.
"boom--"
The surrounding spirits suddenly exploded, turning into a sky full of white mist that instantly enveloped half the courtyard, completely swallowing the fox's figure. Without pausing, Ding Chang flashed and also rushed into the white mist.
Jie Chang watched expectantly, but the surging white mist suddenly contracted, instantly absorbed by a crimson tail. Jie Chang was nowhere to be seen, leaving only the fox standing alone in the moonlight.
Jie Chang's pupils contracted sharply.
It knew best the skills of the nail-wielding beast; the ferocity on that hammer was no joke. Yet, it couldn't even withstand a single move from this fox?
The bizarre scenes made it uneasy, and without thinking, it turned and ran.
There were no footsteps behind it, but it could sense something chasing it. It didn't turn around, it just ran as fast as it could.
The tree shadow receded rapidly, then suddenly turned around without warning and slashed sharply behind it.
There was nothing there, only the rustling of the wind through the grass.
It breathed a sigh of relief, but then it caught a glimpse of a snow-white tail tip dangling in the air. It stiffly looked up and saw the fox sitting on the branch, tilting its head to look at it.
The calamity's scalp tingled, and this time it ran even faster, almost flying. As it ran, it unleashed its ferocity without reservation, surrounding itself.
The evil spirit encountered nothing, but it was still uneasy. It ran for a while longer before stopping to try and determine its direction.
But when it looked up, it saw a mouthpiece hidden in the leaves in front of it.
"Damn it, who's the ghost?!" it cursed fiercely. After running for an unknown amount of time, its vision suddenly opened up, and it could vaguely see lights flickering. Several passersby dressed in black were walking on the road.
Overjoyed, it rushed forward desperately, grabbed the passerby, and opened its mouth wide, about to absorb the yang energy to restore its strength.
"Splash..."
A crisp sound rang out, and the robber froze. The passersby stared coldly at it, their faces ashen, clutching iron chains in their hands.
Before it could react, it was pinned to the ground by the underworld officials.
It rubbed its face against the ground, struggling desperately, and out of the corner of its eye, it saw that damned fox, Ding Chang, standing right next to it, completely unharmed.
"Huh? Even you betrayed me!"
The robber was furious, wishing it could devour the nail-headed robber. If it hadn't been startled by the silent capture of the ghost rat, it wouldn't have been chased around by this charlatan fox and ended up in the hands of the underworld officials.
The underworld officials placed a shackle around the neck of the calamity demon, sealing away all its malevolent energy.
The fox flicked its tail, throwing out all the wandering spirits hidden within. The underworld officials, with clear division of labor, held down each of the spirits, stringing them together, and then turned to look at the nail-wielding demon.
"Fox spirit, what should we do with this one?"
"Tie him up."
Just now, in the fog, Ding Chang bound his own hands and feet, begging the fox to help him take revenge. Without resisting, he was captured by the fox. The fox did not trust this wandering spirit, and released him only to provoke Ding Chang, to let this guy who fantasized about ruling over a group of ghosts and becoming king discover that he had always been alone.
As for the feud between the Nail Demon and the Robber Demon, that will be investigated and dealt with by the underworld according to the law, and has nothing to do with the fox.
As for why Su Yinchai said he wouldn't take action, but Yinchai came to help, that's thanks to the numerous offices in Taishan Prefecture, where duties were intertwined.
The fox is looking for the Ghostly Bureau, but what does that have to do with the Swift Report Bureau?
