Chapter 19 The Lingering Ghost
The snake was two zhang long and as thick as an adult could hug. Wisps of black energy continuously emerged from its fine scales, carrying a familiar chill as it pounced on the fox.
The fox's nose twitched as it caught a familiar scent from the snake's body.
There's no mistake, it's malevolent energy. Did it escape from the graveyard?
Without a moment's hesitation, the giant snake coiled itself up, flicked its tongue, and suddenly lunged forward, its mouth snapping straight at the fox's body.
With a light touch of its paw, the fox's fiery red body spun in the air, its tail turning into a crimson streak, sweeping solidly across the giant snake's face.
Contrary to the imagined hardness, it felt like being smashed into a deep pool of water, lacking the tangible sensation of hitting flesh and blood. The dense, malevolent energy eagerly surged into the fox's body from the tip of its tail.
The fox stiffened slightly, but didn't panic; it already knew how to deal with this kind of thing.
The inner core of his dantian shone brightly, and a torrent of pure, warm, red and white magical power surged out, colliding with the yin energy and making a hissing sound.
The giant snake did not miss the opportunity. It swung its thick tail, its scales sweeping across the ground and carving a deep brown mark. Wherever it went, the grass lost its greenness.
The fox remained calm, flipped over and landed, its black paws touching the snake's tail. It then climbed up the snake's body and stood on its head.
The giant snake angrily shook its head, but the fox's claws seemed to be stuck to the snake's scales. When the giant snake realized it couldn't shake them off, it suddenly turned its head and crashed into a tree on the side.
Wood chips flew everywhere, the tree trunk creaked and fell, kicking up a cloud of dust, but the fox had already rolled off the tree.
"Stupid snake."
The giant snake seemed completely oblivious to the pain, or perhaps this was simply its method of attack. It flicked its red tongue and attacked again.
The crimson shadow swirled around the black scales, the tongue hissed softly, and the sound of claws clashing was incessant.
Not far away, four little mice huddled together tightly. Overwhelmed by their natural enemy and facing an unimaginable battle, they trembled with fear, silently cheering for the fox.
After several exchanges, the fox didn't lose a single hair, while the snake's pitch-black body shimmered with silver light. The magic power the fox had infused was dissolving into the black energy.
The fox suddenly took a few steps back, its mouth slightly open.
The round inner core emerged without any attempt to conceal itself, spinning around in the air.
The giant snake was taken aback. It instinctively coiled its body, its tail muscles bulging, and shot towards the warm jade bead like lightning.
A hint of mockery flashed in the fox's eyes.
The magical power on the snake's body shone brightly at the same time, echoing the fox pill, and the moonlight fell like rain, sweeping over every inch of the snake's body.
Stars reflect the moon.
The giant snake thrashed violently, twisting and turning on the ground. After several struggles, it finally went limp, and its malevolent energy flowed down like muddy water.
As the earth and rocks churned, a small snake, only two feet long, suddenly emerged from the giant snake's enormous body, disappeared underground, and vanished into the soil.
"A sound? What was that thing?" The fox leaped high into the air, slamming its head into the ground. It looked around, then suspiciously pulled its head out. "How did it just disappear like that?"
"Those who are purely Yin and have no Yang are ghosts; those who are a mixture of Yin and Yang are Yin spirits; and those who are purely Yang and have no Yin are Yang spirits."
"If a practitioner's yin energy is not fully exhausted and their spirit leaves prematurely, it is called a yin spirit. The yin spirit can see others, but others cannot see it. Only similar yin spirits or those who understand the mysteries can perceive it."
"The nature of Yin spirit is attached to flesh and blood, and connected to the five internal organs and six bowels. It is weak when it encounters Yang, and strong when it encounters Yin."
The fox turned its head to look at the four trembling little ones behind it, still somewhat puzzled: 'These little ones seem to fit the description of this so-called Yin spirit, but that strange snake looks really odd.'
The fox never gives up on prey that escapes its claws. It strolled up to the mouse family, brought its face close to the baby mice, and asked, "Where's your den? Take the fox there."
The language I had just learned came in handy.
The mother mouse shuddered and immediately stood upright, bowing respectfully like a human: "Thank you, fox spirit! Thank you, fox spirit!"
"Babies, call out!"
The three little mice, as if they had rehearsed beforehand, chanted in unison, "Fox Immortal, your magic is boundless, may you enjoy eternal bliss, and live as long as the heavens!"
The fox slapped the mouse, not with much force, but it still made the little mouse stumble.
"Stop arguing, let's go."
None of them were telling the truth, and they almost fooled the fox. If that snake monster was a thousand feet long, the fox could be a hundred feet long. How dare you come to see the fox?
The little mouse obediently led the way, but its heart, which had just calmed down, was uneasy again. The fox spirit's gaze was too sharp; even without turning around, it could feel thorns in its back. Even though it wasn't physically there, it felt like it was about to explode.
To ease the tension, it kept chattering: "That snake monster is blocking our door. You'll see it when you get there. You were so powerful just now that you injured its spirit. Even if the snake doesn't die, it will be mentally impaired. Then you won't need to take action yourself; I can handle it."
"Speaking of which, the younger ones and the children haven't eaten for almost an hour. Could the fox spirit bestow some snake meat upon us? Adults may not understand, but our family has always been like this. We need to eat continuously throughout the day; if we miss even a single bite, we'll easily starve to death. We don't even dare to sleep too much; we live in constant fear."
"Making it into snake soup would be perfect; the little one has never had snake soup before."
"By the way, could the fox spirit also take down those women from the Kingdom of Women? I don't mean for you to kill them, just to avenge me. I'm not bragging, but I've lived for decades and have never tasted honey better than that of those women. It was incredibly sweet."
"Hmm, have you ever eaten honey, fox spirit? What do you usually eat, fox spirit?"
"Stick your head out, and I'll teach you a lesson," the fox said through gritted teeth.
As if sensing the fox's annoyance, or as if what the mouse said was indeed true, the mother mouse said nothing more and sped away with her children.
After passing through this bend and crossing that stream, a tree that the fox had never seen before came into view.
It was seven or eight zhang tall, with a straight and upright trunk, dense branches spreading out, and leaves hanging down among the branches, each leaf about half a foot long. Clusters of bright orange fruits also hung from the branches.
A gentle evening breeze stirs the golden leaves, causing clusters of fruit to collide and reveal a giant beehive nestled in the tree canopy.
"Huh, what kind of tree is this?"
"The Sapindus mukorossi tree, when burned, has an extremely fragrant aroma and can ward off evil spirits. It is also called Jinlou or Huan."
"Cut branches into canes and hang them above the door to ward off ghosts and demons, protect the corners of the house, and drive away evil spirits. Pound the leaves into juice and use it to bathe and wash clothes to cleanse impurities, ward off evil spirits, and prevent invasion by evil entities."
The fox tilted its head, seemingly lost in thought. It seemed to know why the snake had come here.
"Fox Spirit, we live near that tree root, so the snake should be nearby." The little mouse looked around. "Huh, where did it go?"
The fox looked around and its eyes narrowed.
Not far from the tree roots, the vegetation had completely decayed, and the soil was churning. The fox carefully extended its paw, hooked something on the ground with its claws, and raised it in front of itself.
It was a huge and complete snake molt.
The fox suddenly realized that what felt familiar to it was not the aura of yin and evil.
The scholar was the first person the fox encountered when it entered the mountain god's temple; the monster was the first creature the fox ran into when it descended the mountain.
"Will this ever end?!" the fox exclaimed angrily.
