Chapter 24 True Heroes
After leaving the gym, Rosen, led by Morris, walked through several streets to the very center of the Ronnie neighborhood.
The environment here is much quieter than the surrounding area, and the buildings are also much cleaner.
Morris stopped in front of a detached two-story house.
The house is not ostentatious from the outside. It is built with dark bricks and stones and surrounded by a few cypress trees, giving it a solemn feel.
"Mr. Rosen, you'll be staying here tonight." Morris took out his key and opened the door.
Rosen stepped inside, and the sight within made him raise an eyebrow slightly.
This place is less like the residence of a gang leader and more like the study of a scholar.
The living room was spacious and bright, but there were no expensive antique vases on display; instead, there were some wooden furniture pieces.
What surprised Rosen the most was that there was a mahogany desk in the Father's study, with a tea set and several thread-bound books on it, creating a strange mix with the surrounding American fireplace.
Rosen walked to the bookshelf, randomly picked up a book, and found that it was a treatise on theology and philosophy, with pages covered in dense annotations.
"The decor here... is quite unique." Rosen ran his fingers over the Chinese-style desk and looked at Morris behind him.
Morris stood in the doorway, looking at the familiar room, a hint of nostalgia flashing in his eyes:
"This is where Father Kevin lived during his lifetime."
The old man said softly, "The Holy Father loved Eastern culture when he was alive. He often said that the Eastern concept of 'inner sage and outer king' is similar to the principles of our Iron Claw Gang, and we can learn from it. Every book and every object here was arranged by him personally."
Rosen nodded and looked around the room again.
By moving into the former boss's house, the meaning behind Morris's action is self-evident.
This is not just about accommodation arrangements; it's also an indication of a power transition.
After Morris left, the two-story house returned to silence.
Rosen did not go to rest immediately; his gaze fell on the large mahogany desk.
There were several pens, a stack of documents, and a black leather notebook in the center.
All the items remained in their original positions. For the followers of the Iron Claw Gang, this was a sacred place, the birthplace of the previous "Holy Father's" ideology. No one dared to touch them casually, as if doing so would desecrate some remaining divinity.
Rosen stepped forward, pulled out the solid wood chair, and focused his gaze on the cover of the black notebook. It was a book called "The Iron Claw Codex," and this was its second revised edition.
This seemed to be the title; the cover was old and worn. Rosen reached out and turned to the first page.
What comes into view are several lines of handwriting, written in a rather vigorous style, as if the person who wrote these words was filled with some intense emotion at the time:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son."
The term "people" here does not refer to a specific group, but to all of humanity.
In Christ, there should be no distinction between Black, White, and Chinese.
We are all God's children, and we must tear down the walls that the devils have built to separate us.
I have sensed God's will: that all things may be united in Christ.
Rosen's fingers lightly traced the words before turning to the next page, where the handwriting was even more scribbled and unrestrained:
We are born with original sin, but—
Faced with suffering, we should not submit like mutes, but rather act like Jeremiah, seeking life for all living beings amidst the ruins.
God left us on earth not to suffer in hell, but to be "fence menders," stopping the spread of evil.
This is the gang's ideological manifesto personally written by the previous generation's Father, Kevin Misérables. The Iron Claws do not take the Bible as their core manifesto, but rather their self-created ideology, "The Iron Claw Codex," which is highly characteristic of the gang.
In this country called America, the core concept of Protestantism is "justification by faith." As long as one believes in their heart, everyone can communicate directly with God. Because of this, the interpretation of the doctrine is varied and diverse, resulting in numerous sectarian branches.
Therefore, it was perfectly normal for Kevin to create his own gang manifesto, given that the gang was primarily composed of Protestants.
However, looking at the unorthodox ideas conveyed in these words, Rosen was momentarily stunned.
In this country filled with oppression and injustice, such thinking is nothing short of heresy.
In mainstream Western values, especially in the religious indoctrination received by the lower classes, everyone is born with original sin.
When you are threatened with poverty, disease, violence, or even death, it is not the fault of society or the oppressors; it is God testing your faith.
If you die in suffering, it may only mean that you failed the test, or that God is calling you back to heaven to enjoy bliss.
In his previous life, Rosen often wondered why, despite the fact that the lower classes of this country were exploited to the bone by capitalism, there were so few revolutionary upheavals.
After arriving in this country and gaining a deeper understanding, he realized that the most important reason was undoubtedly the religious ideology that taught people to submit and rationalize suffering.
But what Kevin Mies wrote did the exact opposite.
Despite the biblical references and ornate language—including references to Jeremiah and the phrase "mending the fence"—the core message, stripped of its religious veneer, is remarkably simple and direct:
—Don't suffer.
—If you are suffering, it is not a test from God, but because there is “evil” and “devil” in this world.
—As God’s people, your task is not to endure, but to find the evil source that causes suffering and then destroy it!
"Is this what they mean by 'only iron discipline and methods can judge evil'...?"
Rosen muttered to himself, seemingly lost in thought.
He finally understood why the Iron Claw Gang was able to gather people of all races, including Black, White, and Chinese, in this racially segregated society and maintain such a terrifying level of cohesion.
When everyone is defined as an equal "children of God" in the manifesto, and when all discrimination and segregation are defined as "walls built by the devil," this gang is no longer a simple violent group, but an organization with lofty ideals.
In his opinion, only one organization has accomplished this.
"Kevin Smith, he's quite a character."
Rosen sighed in admiration. To be able to deconstruct complex social contradictions so exquisitely using religious language and transform them into fighting power, this previous Holy Father was definitely a genius.
However, as Rosen continued to turn the pages, he discovered that the later pages were mostly blank.
The words and thoughts abruptly ended at their most passionate point. Rosen looked at the blank space behind him, and a strange sense of regret suddenly welled up in his heart.
The second revised edition of "The Iron Claw Manual" was clearly not yet finished. The idealistic old man may have had more ideas about how to build his ideal heaven, but unfortunately, he died.
If he had lived a few more years, and if this secret text had been completed and spread, it might have truly become a timeless classic that would have shaken the American underclass of religious circles, and even sparked a massive social movement.
Unfortunately, with death comes death, and the unfinished work can only lie quietly on this table, gathering dust.
Rosen remained silent for a moment, then slowly closed his notebook.
