Hogwarts: My Grandmother is the Queen
Chapter 4 Diagon Alley
The next morning, Charing Cross Road, London.
The family of five—Charles, Diana, Henry, William, and Harry—stood in front of a dirty, cramped bar, dressed in casual clothes that were as understated as possible but still of good quality.
The bar sign creaked in the breeze, and it depicted a broken pot.
The Muggles around seemed to be walking by in a hurry, completely oblivious to the bar, or if they did see it, they instinctively avoided it.
"Is this the place?" Charles looked at the place incredulously, which was so different from his usual environment, his brows furrowed.
William looked around curiously, while Harry held tightly to his mother's hand.
"That's right," Dumbledore's voice came from the side.
Today he changed into a simpler robe, looking like a distinguished old scholar.
"Welcome to the Leaky Cauldron, the gateway to the heart of British magical commerce."
He led them into the dimly lit, noisy bar. Several oddly-looking patrons looked up, nodded to Dumbledore, and their gazes swept over the well-dressed family behind him, revealing undisguised surprise and curiosity. The bar owner, Tom, hurriedly wiped his hands and came over.
"Professor Dumbledore! And who are these people...?"
"Good morning, Tom. Some curious visitors have come to visit Diagon Alley," Dumbledore said kindly, skillfully avoiding a direct introduction.
They walked through the small courtyard behind the bar, where Dumbledore drew his wand and struck a specific sequence on a brick in the wall.
The bricks on the wall immediately began to rotate and slide, creating an ever-growing archway in the middle, eventually forming a wide archway leading to a winding street paved with cobblestones.
The streets are lined with all sorts of unique shops, and the crowds are bustling and lively.
"Welcome to Diagon Alley," Dumbledore said, turning around with a smile.
The sight before them left the royal family speechless.
Diana covered her mouth with her hand, Charles opened his eyes wide, William let out a short "Wow!", and Harry hid completely behind his mother, only peeking out with one eye.
Henry, on the other hand, seemed completely unfazed.
The towering shops were crammed together crookedly, their windows flashing with all sorts of bizarre goods: constantly jumping spellbooks, hovering telescopes, cauldrons emitting strange smoke, and even a cage hanging outside one shop containing owls, birds with colorful feathers, and small lizards that occasionally breathe fire.
Male and female wizards in long robes came and went, some with tall bundles on their heads, and others with strange, bouncy pets.
The sky wasn't the typical gray and hazy London sky, but a clear blue, with a few owls flying leisurely by.
"This...is really..." Charles couldn't find the right words.
"Incredible," Diana murmured, her eyes gradually revealing a mesmerizing light as she was drawn to this pure fantasy, in addition to her initial shock.
Yes, magic is amazing.
Their appearance quickly attracted attention.
Despite being dressed in Muggle clothes, Charles and Diana were too recognizable by appearance, not to mention that Dumbledore was personally accompanying them.
Whispers spread like ripples. Some people stared wide-eyed, some rubbed their eyes frantically, and a reporter from the Daily Prophet, as if he had heard some earth-shattering news, excitedly tried to squeeze in, but was stopped by a kind look from Dumbledore.
"Is this the magical world? My God..." Diana looked around, sighing repeatedly.
Henry's two foolish brothers also looked surprised, while Charles, though surprised and curious, tried his best to keep a straight face.
Their Diagon Alley tour began with Gringotts.
It was a towering building taller than the surrounding structures, with heavy bronze doors tightly shut. The figure standing beside the door made Charles's gaze sharpen slightly—it was not human.
They are short in stature, with dark skin, wearing well-tailored scarlet and gold-trimmed uniforms, and have pointed ears and even stranger faces; they are the goblin guards of Gringotts.
"Gringotts Wizarding Bank," Dumbledore's gentle voice rang out, as if introducing a tourist attraction, though his blue eyes were watching everyone's reactions. "The main financial institution of the wizarding world. I think it should be our top priority today to handle some necessary financial arrangements for His Highness Henry. After all, subsequent purchases will require the use of magical currency."
They stepped onto the wide white stone steps and ascended them under the watchful eyes of the fairy guards.
At the entrance to the hall, a fairy with a small tag hanging around her neck was already waiting there.
The sign reads "Pull ring".
"Professor Dumbledore, and distinguished guests," he said with a polite bow, "Gringotts welcomes you. What kind of service do you require?"
"Open a treasury for this young Prince Henry and exchange some Galleons for his expenses in the wizarding world," Dumbledore said succinctly.
Pull-ring's dark eyes swept over Henry, then over Charles and Diana.
"In accordance with the International Code of Secrecy and ancient agreements reached between Gringotts and relevant parties, our bank does not accept the direct exchange or storage of non-magical world paper money. Gringotts has a limit on the amount that can be exchanged for new students at Hogwarts. Account opening and exchange must be conducted with assets approved by our bank."
Dumbledore had mentioned this before, so they were prepared.
"If gold is used as an asset, does it meet your bank's approval criteria?" Charles asked.
The pointed tab on the pull ring twitched.
"Gold is one of the perpetual currencies recognized by Gringotts, provided its purity and origin meet the standards—please follow me."
They were led into the magnificent yet cold marble hall, where hundreds of goblins sat behind long counters under the towering dome, some engrossed in ledgers, others weighing gems on scales.
Many wizarding clients conduct business here, and when they see Dumbledore and his group of visitors with their distinctly different demeanors, especially when they recognize Charles and Diana, astonishment and whispers instantly spread.
Pulling the ring led them to a relatively private reception room, where a magical tapestry depicting ancient fairy financial transactions hung on the wall.
Charles didn't waste time on pleasantries and went straight to the point.
"We hope to set up a separate vault for Henry with the highest level of security and protection. Also, we need to exchange some Galleons for him today, and we brought some gold with us."
He took out a bag and placed it on the table; it was the bag Dumbledore had given him yesterday.
It was a pocket with a seamless stretching spell, containing several large boxes.
The fairies took out the box and opened it, revealing neatly stacked gold bars that shimmered softly under the light.
