You're a US police officer, what are you thinking about going back to the East for?
Chapter 41 Deputy Team Leader
The man wasn't a muscle monster like Jacob; he was of medium build and rather thin, with a very stylishly trimmed mustache and his hair slicked back with a lot of hair gel.
He was wearing a slightly worn dark brown leather jacket over a floral shirt, the collar open to reveal a gold cross on his chest.
At first glance, he doesn't look like a SWAT officer; he looks more like a sly private detective from a 1980s Miami cop movie, specializing in smuggling goods on the streets.
"I knew it! I knew that she-devil Sterling wouldn't send some useless piece of trash to die!"
He excitedly tossed the sunflower seed shells in his hand into the air, then grabbed the still-sleepy, messy-haired guy next to him, stretched out his hand in front of him, and hooked his fingers rapidly:
"Give me the money, give me the money! Stop playing dead, a bet's a bet!"
"A 1 to 10 betting line, I'm rich! I bet the newbie can take Jacob down in a minute. How many seconds did that slam take? Five seconds? Or three?"
"I told you this new boss was definitely a trained fighter, but you wouldn't believe me, insisting he was just a spineless coward trying to get some experience! Hahahaha!"
While berating his constipated-looking colleagues, the guy unceremoniously pulled crumpled US dollars from their pockets.
"Damn Carlos... can't you hope for something better?"
"Damn it, that's my cigarette money for this week..."
It turns out that the cold attitude of those bastards just now, and even Jacob's provocation, were all because these bored guys set up a betting pool before Lyon even entered.
The result was obvious: apart from Carlos, who cleverly deciphered Sterling's personnel logic and bet on an upset, everyone else thought Leon would get thoroughly beaten by Jacob.
"Sir, from now on you're like an older brother to me!"
Carlos blew a kiss to Leon.
"Let me introduce myself, Carlos, ACU's number one driver, and part-time information broker."
"Thanks, boss! That fall of yours has covered my cigarette and alcohol expenses for this month!"
Leon ignored the guy who was clearly a gambling addict and looked down at Kevin on the ground.
This guy was quick to cling to someone's coattails when things looked bad, but now that things have calmed down, he scrambled to his feet, dusting off his pants while flashing a fawning smile at Leon.
"Sir, I knew you were so powerful..."
"Alright, let's clean up the mess."
Leon took a half-step back in disgust, interrupting his flattery.
"If Jacob had knocked me down just now, you probably would have stolen my wallet by now, right?"
Kevin chuckled awkwardly, adjusted his thick-rimmed glasses, and didn't seem embarrassed at all.
"Sir, you have a very good eye for people."
"In this godforsaken place like ACU, if I didn't have this ability to adapt to changing circumstances, I would have been used as bait by these lunatics in some raid long ago. I'm just a tech guy, you know."
"If you win, you're like my own father. If you lose, I'll definitely have to cut ties with you immediately to save my own life."
This guy admitted it so frankly, so shamelessly that even Leon couldn't get angry.
Amidst this chaotic farce...
A heavy sigh came from the corner, accompanied by the sound of a lighter grinding wheel.
There was a desk piled high with files and ashtrays, behind which sat a man who was constantly puffing on a cigarette.
He was also the only person in the entire house who hadn't participated in the farce that had just happened.
"call…"
He stood up amidst the swirling smoke.
This is Sergeant Harrison, the former deputy head of the ACU, and currently the most senior member of the team.
He is in his early forties, but looks like he is already fifty.
With a stubble beard, a receding hairline, and a face etched with exhaustion that screamed "I want to die" and "I don't want to work overtime."
His shirt was so wrinkled it looked like it had been pulled out of a pickle jar, and his tie hung crookedly around his neck.
He looked at Lyon, his gaze complex.
While he was still on the street arresting drug dealers yesterday, he received an email from Sterling saying that a second-class patrol officer named Leon Vance would be parachuted in today to become the team leader.
To be honest, he was extremely unhappy when he received the transfer order.
On what grounds?
He worked at ACU for five years, and his previous team leader...
Oh, that poor guy was sent flying by an improvised explosive device in his car just two weeks ago, and they didn't even manage to piece together a complete corpse.
Logically, it should be his turn to inherit the throne.
As a result, Sterling's woman preferred to transfer someone from outside rather than give him a permanent position.
This added insult to injury to his already broken heart, which was already broken by his wife running off with his fitness trainer and him having to pay her three thousand dollars in child support every month.
If he doesn't pay, the bailiff will deduct the money directly from his salary card.
Unless he loses his job, goes bankrupt, or becomes homeless, his ex-wife can continue to bleed him dry until the children reach adulthood.
This damn American law, this damn marriage law, this damn glass ceiling!
At first, he had considered teaching this newcomer a lesson, and even tacitly approved of Jacob and his group's provocative behavior.
But now it seems...
Harrison glanced at Jacob, who was still lying on the ground groaning, and then at Leon, who was calm and composed, not even breathing heavily.
This guy is no pushover.
Absolutely not.
Harrison shoved the cigarette butt into the ashtray that was already piled up like a small mountain and crushed it hard.
Forget it
Tired
Destroy it!
He shook his head inwardly, and suddenly felt relieved.
What are we arguing about?
The position of ACU group leader is, frankly speaking, a hot potato sitting on a volcano.
The ashes of the previous person are still warm in the cemetery.
Now that a newcomer who is skilled in combat, has connections, and seems even more ruthless than gang members is willing to take the fall, why wouldn't he be happy to do so?
As long as his salary is paid in full and overtime pay is sufficient, and he can shut up his greedy ex-wife, what difference does it make who is the boss?
not to mention……
He glanced around at the group of oddballs in the room.
Carlos, a gambling addict, and Kevin, a fence-sitter, are already considered relatively good.
There are at least five other brainy brutes like Jacob sitting in the office.
These people are so stupid that they need a calculator to do even simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division within the range of twenty.
Aside from knowing how to shoot and solve problems with violence, any slightly complex logical thinking is harder than climbing to heaven for them.
The entry requirements for police academies are ridiculously low. As long as you don't have a serious criminal record and your IQ is above average, or even not too high, you can be issued a gun and put on the job after six months of training.
Only a bunch of hot-blooded idiots would openly fight against an airborne faction that clearly has Sterling's background and is incredibly skilled.
As the deputy group leader, and one of the few adults in the room who was still of sound mind, Harrison felt obligated to make the right choice for everyone's retirement savings and safety.
"Alright, all of you, shut the hell up."
He stepped forward and kicked Jacob, who was still pretending to be dead on the ground.
"Stop whining. They held back just now, otherwise your spine would have broken. Get up now and don't embarrass ACU."
After saying that, he turned around to face Lyon, forcing a somewhat friendly expression onto his dejected face, and extended his hand.
"Harrison Reyes, deputy team leader. Sir, since you were able to take down Jacob, these bastards should be able to understand you."
"That would save me some trouble, even if I could just go back to sleep."
