Chapter 98 The Encounter Was Like: A Wolf Meeting the Moon
Fan Shengmei used to think that weekends were nothing more than changing places to daydream. Either she would stay at home sighing at the limited edition bags in fashion magazines, or she would sit in a coffee shop with friends, chatting about the same old workplace gossip and fashion tips. Her days were like a glass of lukewarm water, without any flavor.
Until Liang Jiaoyue barged in.
The WeChat message on Friday night came suddenly, brimming with a touch of excited wildness: "Hey sis, are you free this weekend? I'll take you to do something fun."
Fan Shengmei smiled as she stared at the screen and replied with an "OK". She was actually curious about what surprises this person, who lived such a carefree life, could possibly have.
Early Saturday morning, the black SUV parked downstairs in the apartment complex was particularly eye-catching. Liang Jiaoyue leaned against the car door, her black leather jacket open, revealing a simple white T-shirt underneath. Her hair was casually tousled, and wisps of hair couldn't hide her strikingly bright eyes. Seeing Fan Shengmei approach, she casually tossed a bouquet of red roses to her, raised her chin, and said with a hint of roguishness mixed with delight, "Get in, I'll take you out for some fun."
The faint fragrance in the car wasn't particularly elegant, but it strangely made people feel at ease.
As the car drove out of the city, the tall buildings were gradually replaced by green hills and clear waters. Liang Jiaoyue asked Fan Shengmei what she wanted to hear, and Fan Shengmei said anything was fine. She put on some upbeat rock music, and the wind blew in through the car window, messing up Fan Shengmei's long hair and also dispelling the gloom that had accumulated in her heart.
The first stop was a mountain off-road vehicle course in the suburbs. Looking at the rugged track, Fan Shengmei was pleasantly surprised: "I've never done this before."
"What are you afraid of? I'm here." Liang Jiaoyue patted her shoulder, the force not too light or too heavy. "I'll take you, drive slowly, I guarantee it will be safe and exciting."
She helped Fan Shengmei fasten her seatbelt, then got into the driver's seat herself, and the car slowly started moving. At first, Fan Shengmei gripped the handrail tightly, too nervous to open her eyes. Liang Jiaoyue steadily steered the car while talking to her, "Sister, open your eyes and look, the scenery around you is so beautiful."
Fan Shengmei slowly opened her eyes. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, dappling the racetrack. As the car traversed the bumpy sections, the slight feeling of weightlessness brought a novel thrill, causing her to gasp and then laugh. Hearing her laughter, Liang Jiaoyue's lips also curved into a smile. She deliberately slowed down, allowing Fan Shengmei to fully savor this rare moment of relaxation.
They ate authentic farm-style food at a nearby farmhouse for lunch. Liang Jiaoyue ordered a table full of dishes, all of which Fan Shengmei had mentioned wanting to eat on her WeChat Moments. "Eat more," she said, putting food on Fan Shengmei's plate. "This place is especially famous for its free-range chicken."
Looking at the pile of food in her bowl, Fan Shengmei felt a warmth in her heart. This girl was surprisingly thoughtful.
Over the next few weekends, Liang Jiaoyue showed her all sorts of new ways to play.
When they went to the shooting range, she stood behind Fan Shengmei, gently supporting her arms with both hands to adjust her posture, her breath brushing against her ear: "Aim at the bullseye, don't panic."
They went to the pottery studio to make pottery, and their hands were covered in clay. Liang Jiaoyue handed her a crooked cup she had made: "Sister, keep this. It's one of a kind."
They went to a livehouse to listen to an indie band. Amidst the deafening music, Liang Jiaoyue draped her coat over her shoulders and shouted in her ear, "Did you like it? Next time I'll bring you to something even more explosive!"
Fan Shengmei's weekends have completely changed. They're no longer just monotonous staying at home or afternoon tea, but filled with novelty and excitement. She increasingly enjoys spending time with Liang Jiaoyue, liking her unrestrained passion, the sense of security she brings, and the feeling of being cared for.
She thought it was just friendship; she had never been valued like this before.
Liang Jiaoyue's understanding of this feeling has always been crystal clear: it's liking, the flutter in her heart that makes her heart race when she sees Fan Shengmei smile, and the sense of security and dependence she feels when she's near her. This liking stems from the similarity between Fan Shengmei and her mother, both stunningly beautiful women, though Liang Jiaoyue has only ever seen their photos.
Every time Fan Shengmei showed concern for her, she wanted to hug her arm and cry, but she didn't do so for the sake of her image.
She lost her parents at a young age; a car accident left her an orphan. But her parents left her a large inheritance, enough to provide for her for generations. She smiles in front of everyone, but she doesn't want her elders to know her pain, because she knows that the pain of an elder burying their child is even greater.
Her grandparents were very wealthy and doted on her, never letting her spend a penny. They were always worried she wouldn't have enough money and would frequently send her large sums. Her uncles, aunts, and other relatives also treated her like their own daughter, always stuffing her red envelopes full during holidays and regularly sending her money.
For Liang Jiaoyue, money is just a string of meaningless numbers. She doesn't need to struggle for a living or worry about money; those mountains of wealth are utterly useless to her.
Her only hobby is racing, but the money she spends on racing is just a drop in the ocean compared to her wealth.
She scrolled through Fan Shengmei's social media, noting down every limited-edition bag Fan Shengmei had liked, every classic perfume she had collected, and every popular lipstick shade Fan Shengmei had mentioned. She could tell Fan Shengmei liked these things.
She liked Fan Shengmei, so she wanted to present all the things that Fan Shengmei liked to her.
For her, it was an incredibly simple matter. It was just exchanging those numbers that were useless to her for Fan Shengmei's happy smile—it was well worth it.
Back at her grandparents' old house, Liang Jiaoyue went straight to her room. She had the shopping mall deliver the bags, lipsticks, and perfumes she had ordered long ago, filling the room to the brim. There was a limited-edition Hermes bag that Fan Shengmei had shown off, classic Chanel perfumes from her collection, and more than a dozen popular lipstick shades.
She took out a thick wad of cash from the safe and carefully stuffed it into her bag, one wad at a time. Cash was useless to her and took up space; it would just sit in the bank earning interest anyway. She figured it was better to put it in her bag and make Fan Shengmei happy. She squatted down, stuffing money into her bag while imagining Fan Shengmei's expression when she received the gift, and a smile involuntarily crept onto her lips.
A thin layer of sweat glistened on her forehead, but she didn't feel tired at all. She placed the last bottle of perfume into the gift box, dusted off her hands, and looked at the gifts piled in the center of the room, her eyes filled with pure anticipation.
There were no complicated thoughts, no intention to confess; she simply wanted to be kind to Fan Shengmei, to make her happy. If she wanted something, she would offer it to her. But this was too little; she would continue with newer designs later. For Liang Jiaoyue, being able to use her most useless possessions to bring a smile to the face of the person she loved was enough.
She casually bought an apartment in Ode to Joy, on the 21st floor, and turned it into a private walk-in closet, so that Fan Shengmei would have a place to do her makeup and get ready.
