Chapter 30 The Demon Child's Havoc in Ode to Joy
It was late at night when Fan Shengmei brought her parents and Lei Lei back to 2202. The cramped two-bedroom apartment was instantly packed with people. Fan's father threw the burlap sack into the corner and squatted down to smoke, cigarette ash falling to the floor. Fan's mother took over Fan Shengmei's only desk and dumped out all the old clothes and local specialties she had brought to sort through. Lei Lei, like a wild horse, grabbed the dolls on Qiu Yingying's desk and threw them, then grabbed the silk scarf Guan Juer was hanging on the clothes rack, laughing and rolling on the floor.
Fan Shengmei was furious. Suppressing her anger, she said to her mother, "Mom, tell Lei Lei not to touch or break things. These all belong to my roommate."
Without even looking up, Fan's mother rummaged through Fan Shengmei's clothes in the closet and folded them at the foot of the bed, saying, "What does a child know? What's wrong with playing around? You live in such a spacious house, how much does the rent cost each month? I told you to live in the company dormitory to save money, but you wouldn't listen. Your brother is still hiding from his debts outside."
"I'm sharing an apartment, and the rent is a little over a thousand yuan a month, which is already the cheapest I can get," Fan Shengmei explained wearily. She reached out to pull Lei Lei, but the child pushed her hard, and she almost hit the door frame.
At this moment, Mr. Fan stubbed out his cigarette and slowly said, "Shengmei, your brother has gotten himself into big trouble this time. The creditors have even come to the door and smashed the windows. We brought Leilei here, firstly to hide for a while, and secondly to ask you for help—your brother said he still needs tens of thousands of yuan to settle things, so you can try to scrape together some money."
Fan Shengmei felt a sudden dizziness. She took out the last three thousand yuan in cash from her bag and placed it on the table: "Dad, this is all I have. This is all the savings I have to get through until I get paid."
Mother Fan's eyes widened. She picked up the money and counted it over and over, her face full of disbelief: "Is that all? Your monthly salary is so high, how could you only have this much left? Did you hide it? Shengmei, that's your own brother, you can't just stand by and watch him die!"
"I send most of my salary home every month, and the rest goes to rent and food. Where would I get any money left?" Fan Shengmei's eyes reddened, and her voice was filled with suppressed grievance. "I paid half of my brother's house, and I also paid off his previous debts. I really have no money left."
But her parents refused to believe it. Fan's mother sat on the edge of the bed and wiped away her tears, repeatedly muttering, "What's the use of raising a daughter? She can't help at all when it matters. We, the old couple, spent most of the day freezing at the train station with the child, and you just give us this little bit of money to get rid of us..." Fan's father sighed beside him, his words implying, "Your brother has had a hard time" and "A family should help each other."
Half an hour later, 2202 was no longer peaceful. Fan's father spat on the ground and smoked in the house, ignoring his repeated warnings; Fan's mother kept rummaging through Fan Shengmei's wardrobe, complaining that she bought too many clothes and wasting money, but then she would give the skincare products that Fan Shengmei bought to Lei Lei as toys; Lei Lei went even further, tearing up Qiu Yingying's notebook and knocking over Guan Juer's water glass, and Fan's mother would just dismiss it with a casual "the child is still young".
Looking at the chaotic state of room 2202, Fan Shengmei felt a throbbing pain in her temples. Lei Lei was tearing Qiu Yingying's notebook apart with a loud ripping sound, Fan's mother was squatting on the floor rummaging through her delivery boxes, and Fan's father was leaning against the doorframe, puffing on cigarette ash. She took a deep breath, suppressing her anger, and pulled a wad of cash from her wallet, stuffing it into Fan's mother's hand.
"Mom, take this money. I'll book a hotel for you nearby. It'll be clean and spacious, and Lei Lei will be able to sleep more comfortably."
The moment Fan's mother touched the money and heard the word "hotel," she immediately recoiled as if burned, her voice rising eight octaves in an instant: "Why stay in a hotel? That will cost so much! We're not delicate people, what's wrong with squeezing in? You just don't know how to manage money, you have money but don't know how to save it to pay off your brother's debts!"
Fan Shengmei closed her eyes briefly and patiently explained, "This room is too small. It's really inconvenient for three people to squeeze in. My roommate also needs to rest."
"Inconvenient?" Mr. Fan threw the cigarette butt on the ground, ground it under his foot, his face full of indifference. "We're all family, what's inconvenient about it? You live in such a nice house in Shanghai, while your parents stay in a hotel. If word gets out, won't people gossip about you? Say you're unfilial!"
Fan Shengmei felt a lump in her throat, unable to breathe. She turned to look at Lei Lei, who was throwing a tantrum, then at the mess on the floor, her voice pleading, "Dad, Mom, I'm begging you, please let us stay at a hotel. I really have no other choice."
But Fan's parents seemed determined, refusing to listen to reason. Fan's mother plopped down on the ground, slapping her thigh and wailing, "Why is my life so miserable! I raised a thankless daughter who enjoys a life of luxury in Shanghai, and can't even tolerate her parents! We, the old couple, brought the child all this way to seek refuge with you, and you want to kick us out!"
As soon as she shouted, all the motion-activated lights in the hallway turned on, and the neighbor's door quietly opened a crack, with someone peeking out. Fan Shengmei's face instantly turned bright red, and she hurriedly pulled her mother away, saying, "Mom, stop making a scene! People will laugh at us!"
"What a joke!" Mother Fan cried even louder, her neck stiff. "I'm telling you right now, if you won't let us stay here, we'll sleep on the streets! We'll sleep at the train station! We've had enough of living anyway!"
Mr. Fan chimed in, "That's right! We're not going to a hotel! You go if you want! We'll stay here!"
Seeing his grandmother cry, Lei Lei also started crying at the top of his lungs. The three voices mingled together, disturbing the peace of the entire building. Fan Shengmei's eyes reddened with anxiety, tears welling up in them. Looking at the neighbors who had gathered to watch the commotion, she felt all the blood rush to her head, wishing she could disappear into the ground.
Having exhausted all other options, she turned and walked out. Thinking she had given in, her mother immediately stopped crying and gave her husband a smug wink. But little did she know, Fan Shengmei had gone downstairs to find the property management.
When the property management staff came up, they looked helpless at the mess inside and the elderly and children throwing a tantrum. Fan Shengmei's eyes were red and her voice was trembling: "Please help me, please persuade my parents, I really... I really can't take it anymore."
Despite the property management staff's attempts to reason with them, Fan's parents remained unmoved. Fan's mother even grabbed Lei Lei and rushed out of apartment 2202, running downstairs.
"We're not staying here! We'll sleep on the street! Let everyone see this is the wonderful daughter I've raised with such care and love!"
Fan Shengmei was terrified and chased after her. In the darkness, Fan's mother, holding her child, threw a tantrum under the streetlights of the neighborhood, repeatedly muttering "my daughter is unfilial." Fan's father followed beside her, occasionally adding fuel to the fire, attracting onlookers who stopped to watch and point.
Fan Shengmei rushed over, trying to pull her mother up, but her mother pushed her away violently. Looking at the strange looks around her and listening to the whispers, she felt a chill run through her body, as if she had been stripped naked and thrown into the snow.
She stood there, watching her parents throwing a tantrum and her crying nephew, and suddenly felt that all those years of forbearance and sacrifice were like a huge joke.
Just then, Qiu Yingying and Guan Juer rushed downstairs. Without saying a word, Qiu Yingying grabbed Fan's mother's arm and shouted, "Auntie! Stop making a scene! Sister Fan has had a hard life! Let's talk this out!"
Guan Juer then squatted down, took out some candy from her pocket, and handed it to Lei Lei, gently coaxing him, "Little one, don't cry. Here's some candy for you, okay? We won't make a fuss anymore, alright?"
As Fan Shengmei watched her two roommates' figures disappear, tears finally streamed down her face.
