Chapter 49 Declaration of War! A Choice Above the Stars

Inside the Titan-class destroyer No. 3, the lights were dim, except for the giant screen in the center, which emitted a dazzling light that drew everyone's attention.

The long negotiations finally came to an end. On the screen was the magnificent hall of the Star River Federation, with its dome inlaid with dazzling star diamonds and its floor covered with snow-white carpets, exuding luxury and majesty.

In the center of the hall, the highest leader of the Star River Federation stood side by side with several strangely shaped creatures, their hands clasped together, and a fake smile on their faces. Behind them, staff members were holding a thick agreement, ready to complete the final signing.

Those creatures were the so-called "subhumans"—some were hunched over, covered in grayish-brown fur, with protruding faces, resembling monkeys; some were slimy all over, with countless tentacles, heads that looked just like octopuses, and cloudy, greedy eyes; others were covered in hard exoskeletons, with bloated bodies and thick limbs, like monstrous insects that had become spirits, with a ferocious and terrifying appearance.

Ye Fan stood in the crowd, his hands clenched into fists, his knuckles white, his nails almost digging into his palms, his eyes burning with rage, his teeth grinding together, and his entire aura turning cold and violent.

"Damn these aliens!" he roared inwardly, his voice filled with hatred and resentment. "They should all be killed! Humans are humans, what kind of subhumans are they! They're nothing but a bunch of monsters who feed on humans and treat human life like dirt!"

He could never forget how his parents were brutally murdered by these alien species, the despair of his home being destroyed, or the cries of his fellow humans who were eaten by these alien species. These images were branded into his heart, becoming his eternal pain.

The Star River Federation actually wants to sign a peace and integration treaty with these damned alien species and even acknowledge these monsters as "humans," which is something he absolutely cannot tolerate!

The surrounding soldiers also showed expressions of anger and dissatisfaction, cursing and discussing under their breath, their eyes filled with disappointment and determination—they went to the battlefield to fight and shed blood, not to coexist peacefully with these monsters, but to protect humanity and for revenge.

Just then, the scene on the screen suddenly changed. The magnificent hall disappeared, replaced by a simple yet imposing command room. A man in a black military uniform stood in front of the camera, his posture upright, his eyes firm, and his whole being exuding a calm and powerful aura.

That was Chen Mo, the supreme leader of the Human Federation.

Chen Mo's gaze, seemingly piercing through time and space, fell upon every human being. His voice, steady and powerful, filled with boundless resolve, resounded in every corner of the ship and in the ears of countless humans: "I am Chen Mo, the supreme leader of the Human Federation!"

"We've learned that the Star River Federation has signed a peace and integration treaty with those so-called demi-humans, those damned alien races!" His tone suddenly turned sharp, a cold killing intent flashing in his eyes. "Admit it, everyone! You simply cannot tolerate those alien races living around you, cannot tolerate these monsters who could eat your parents, children, and lovers every single day!"

These words struck a chord deep within the hearts of every human being, instantly igniting suppressed anger and fear. Inside the ship, all fell silent as everyone stared intently at the screen, their eyes filled with resonance and resolve.

Chen Mo's voice continued, filled with a deep sense of mission, reverence for his ancestors, and unwavering commitment to humanity's future: "In the early stages of the Great Expedition, our ancestors used their own flesh and blood to carve out this galaxy! They used their lives to protect the spark of humanity!"

"They risked their lives, not so that these monsters, like those from ancient legends, could live among us! Not so that humanity could become food for these monsters!"

As he finished speaking, Chen Mo's tone grew increasingly impassioned, his aura becoming ever more powerful. He raised his right hand and shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice deafening and echoing across the stars: "Let us rediscover the courage etched deep in our blood, and in ancient Chinese, English, Russian, and German, together proclaim that oath—war!!!"

"war!"

The soldiers inside the ship instantly erupted in cheers. Everyone raised their right hands and shouted in unison, their voices filled with boundless anger and determination, as if they wanted to vent all the hatred in their hearts.

Ye Fan also shouted loudly, his voice hoarse but full of power, and the anger in his eyes burned even more fiercely—this is the attitude that humans should have, not compromise, not retreat, but fight!

Chen Mo's gaze hardened, and his voice rang out again, filled with unwavering resolve: "We will fight them in the endless galaxy! Whether it's destroying planets or burning nebulae, we will fight steadfastly! We will never compromise, we will never retreat!"

"Fellow human beings in the endless galaxy! As long as you reach out your hand, as long as you uphold human dignity, the Human Federation will cross the stars and fight for you!"

The image faded, but Chen Mo's voice still echoed in everyone's ears. Every word was etched into everyone's hearts, igniting their fighting spirit and fueling humanity's hope.

Just then, a cold, mechanical voice suddenly rang out from inside the ship, echoing in every corner, shattering the brief commotion and bringing a palpable sense of urgency: "All ships on Level One combat readiness! All ships on Level One combat readiness!"

"All combat personnel, return to your positions immediately and prepare for combat! The ship will perform a space jump in three hours to proceed to the designated battlefield!"

"All civilians, disembark immediately and proceed to the established safe settlement on the ground. Repeat, all civilians, disembark immediately!"

The prompts played repeatedly, and the soldiers in the command cabin instantly composed themselves, their expressions becoming solemn and serious. They turned around and quickly ran towards their posts, their steps hurried and without the slightest delay—the war had officially begun, and they were about to rush to the battlefield to fight a bloody battle.

A tall comrade patted Ye Fan on the shoulder, his voice serious and resolute: "Ye Fan, go and take your sister down to the settlement on the ground."

"The war has begun, and we could die at any moment. The mortality rate for destroyer squadrons in intergalactic wars is as high as sixty percent. We don't know if we can survive, and we can't let your sister stay here and risk her life."

Upon hearing this, Ye Fan's body stiffened slightly, and a complex emotion flashed in his eyes—he knew that his comrade was right. Interstellar warfare was too cruel. Although the destroyers in the Titan-class fleet were powerful, they could not guarantee absolute safety. Leaving his sister on the ship would undoubtedly push her to the edge of danger.

In the later stages of the Great Expedition, humanity had already witnessed the brutality of interstellar warfare. Countless ships were destroyed, and countless soldiers were sacrificed. A destroyer squadron could often lose more than half its strength in a single battle, with very few survivors.

He couldn't let his sister repeat the mistakes of their parents, and he couldn't let her suffer any harm.

Ye Fan nodded slowly, his voice low and hoarse: "Okay, I'll go right away."

After saying that, he turned around and walked quickly toward the soldiers' dormitory. His steps were hurried, and his heart was full of heaviness and reluctance. He didn't know if he would ever see his sister again, or if he would ever come back alive.

Inside the ship, a flurry of activity had already begun. Soldiers rushed to their posts, while civilians, dragging their suitcases, hurried toward the disembarkation passage. The sighs of the elderly, the cries of children, and the admonitions of soldiers mingled together, revealing the panic and oppression before the impending war.

Ye Fan weaved through the crowded throng and quickly returned to his dormitory. The moment he pushed open the door, a small figure came into view.

Ye Lingyun was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding a tattered rag doll in her arms. It was left to her by her parents before they passed away and was her only memento. When she heard the door open, she immediately looked up and saw Ye Fan. Her eyes lit up instantly and a bright smile appeared on her face.

She jumped off the bed with a joyful leap and ran quickly toward Ye Fan. The hem of her small skirt spun rapidly with her movements, resembling a blooming white flower, pure and beautiful, instantly dispelling the heaviness in Ye Fan's heart.

"Brother! You're back so early today!" Ye Lingyun's voice was clear and melodious, filled with the innocence and joy of a child. She threw herself into Ye Fan's arms, hugged his waist tightly, pressed her little face against his chest, and rubbed against him affectionately.

Ye Fan lowered his head, looking at his younger sister in his arms. The complexity and heaviness in his eyes were gradually replaced by tenderness. He reached out and gently touched her head, his fingertips softly combing through her hair. His voice was gentle: "Yes, brother is back early."

Feeling the warmth of his younger sister in his arms, Ye Fan felt a pang of sadness in his heart—his sister was still so young, and should have had a happy childhood, but because of the war, she was forced to wander and lost her parents, and had to endure the pain of separation from her loved ones.

He took a deep breath, suppressing the bitterness in his heart, and his tone became heavy as he slowly spoke: "Lingyun, your brother is going to war. Why don't you go to the surface? Go to the settlement on the surface. It's safe there. I'll come back to find you after the war."

"No! I'm not going!"

Upon hearing this, Ye Lingyun immediately released Ye Fan, raised her head, and the smile on her face vanished completely. Tears welled up in her large eyes, quickly sliding down her cheeks and dripping onto her clothes, leaving small wet patches.

She shook her head, her voice trembling with a sob, yet also filled with determination: "I want to go with my brother. That's what Dad said before. He said he was going to fight in the war and that he would come back, but he never did!"

"I know, brother is afraid I'll be in danger, but I'm not!" Ye Lingyun reached out her small hand and tightly grasped Ye Fan's clothes, her eyes resolute, but her tears flowed even more fiercely. "I want to be with brother, even if it means death, I want to be with brother, I don't want to lose brother again!"

Looking at his sister's tear-streaked face and listening to her choked words, Ye Fan felt a sharp pain in his heart, as if it were being cut by a knife. His originally firm resolve wavered instantly—he couldn't bear to let his sister go to the surface alone, and he was even more afraid that if he went, he would never come back and never see his sister again.

Although the settlement on the ground was said to be safe, he knew that there was no absolute safety in war. Moreover, he had already witnessed the dark side of human nature. In desperate situations, human greed and selfishness were often more terrifying than the alien species. He couldn't imagine what his sister would encounter alone on the ground.

But if he stays on the ship with his sister, the battlefield is fraught with danger. If the ship is destroyed, his sister's life will be in danger. What should he do?

Ye Fan was caught in a dilemma. His brows furrowed tightly, his expression was solemn, and he remained silent, his eyes filled with struggle and helplessness.

Just then, soft footsteps sounded at the dormitory entrance, and a gentle female voice broke the silence between the two: "You're Ye Fan, the genius boy from the logistics department?"

Upon hearing this, Ye Fan instantly snapped out of his daze and turned his head warily. He saw a woman standing at the dormitory entrance, dressed in a white research institute uniform, with long hair cascading down her shoulders. She had a delicate face and looked to be in her early twenties. She exuded a gentle yet professional aura, and her calm eyes were looking at him with a warm gaze.

She wore a silver badge on her chest with the words "Alien Research Institute" engraved on it, clearly indicating that she was a researcher from the Alien Research Institute.

Ye Fan's eyes still held a hint of wariness. He didn't recognize this woman, nor did he know why she had found him here, or what her purpose was. He slowly spoke, his tone tinged with doubt: "Who are you?"

The woman walked slowly into the dormitory, her steps light, a faint smile on her face, and her voice gentle as she spoke: "I am Lin Xi, a researcher of alien species."

Her gaze fell on Ye Lingyun, and seeing the little girl's tearful face, a hint of heartache flashed in her eyes. Then, she turned her gaze back to Ye Fan and said calmly, "If you are thinking about your sister, I suggest you either take her with you, or send her to our research institute's ship."

"Our research institute ship is located at the very core of the fleet and is equipped with the most advanced defense system. In the event of danger, it will immediately perform a space jump, making it far safer than the ground settlements and this destroyer."

After speaking, she paused, her tone carrying a hint of sarcasm and a touch of certainty: "If you put her on the ground, heh, don't trust human nature too much. In war, people's hearts are unpredictable. Ground settlements may not be as safe as you imagine."
