Zhang Quhun held a small hand axe in his hand, looking around as he walked.

"Brother Kun, is wolf meat delicious?" he said, licking his lips as he imagined the texture of the wolf meat.

Zhang Quhun was a simpleton, fearless and audacious. In his eyes, wolves were nothing more than a pile of meat.

"Wolf meat, huh? It might taste fishy and bitter. I've heard it's also a kind of medicinal ingredient." Chang Kun chatted with Zhang Quhun, easing his tense nerves.

The two followed the trail of blood step by step, but found no trace of the wolf.

"Brother Kun, there's a wild boar!" Zhang Quhun spotted the wild boar, and his voice changed completely as he shouted, his whole body in a state of excitement.

A huge wild boar was lying under a big tree, its legs still trembling slightly, as if it was unwilling to become minced pork.

Zhang Quhun took off running towards the wild boar, pounced on it, hugged it tightly, and grinned foolishly.

Chang Kun looked around but couldn't find any trace of the wolf; it must have been frightened away by the gunshot.

Only after reaching out and pulling Zhang Quhun aside could one see clearly.

The female wild boar had her anterior cavity pierced, and blood was still gushing out in small spurts.

"Brother Kun, this wild boar must weigh over 200 pounds."

"That's right, the wild boars here are relatively small, while the wild boars in Northeast China are much bigger."

"Cricket, do you know how to slaughter a pig?"

Zhang Quhun shook his head.

Chang Kun took the small hand axe and tossed it in his hand.

I thought to myself, I've only ever seen pigs slaughtered, but I've never actually done it myself. But there's always a first time for everything.

If this wild boar isn't gutted and bled quickly, the meat might rot in this hot weather.

Chang Kun grabbed the wild boar's left hind hoof with one hand, while Zhang Quhun grabbed the wild boar's left front hoof. The two of them twisted the wild boar over with force, turning it upside down.

He used a small hand axe to cut a gash in the wild boar's neck, then slowly cut down along the gash, across its abdomen, until the entire cavity was opened.

Chang Kun breathed a sigh of relief after carefully removing the wild boar's internal organs one by one and putting them into a burlap sack.

"Cricket, take the axe and chop down a big tree branch. We'll put the pig on the branch and drag it along."

"Hehe, Kun, you're really smart."

Zhang Quhun looked on with admiration. Not only was Brother Kun good at shooting, but he could even butcher pigs.

Chang Kun curled his lip. "Do I need you, you idiot, to say I'm smart?"

They flipped the wild boar onto a tree branch and dragged the branch out of the mountain. Before long, both of their stomachs started rumbling.

They had been running around in the mountains all morning, and then slaughtering and dragging pigs, which had really exhausted them.

"We're still so far away, are we going to be unable to get out of the mountains tonight?" Zhang Quhun wiped the sweat from his brow.

The sun was already high in the sky, making the two of them sweat profusely.

"I think I'd better go back to the village and find a small cart. We don't want to work ourselves to death."

"Here's a gun. Shoot if you see a wolf, or climb a tree. You can throw away a pig, but you can't be hurt, understand?"

Chang Kun gave Zhang Quhun some instructions.

He was worried that Zhang Quhun wouldn't be able to borrow a cart when he returned to the village because he was too clumsy with words, so it was safer for him to make the trip himself.

Zhang Quhun nodded, thinking to himself, "It would be even better if the wolves dared to come; then I could eat wolf meat."

Chang Kun was so tired that he had no strength left, and he slowly walked out of the mountain.

When we reached the village entrance, it was already noon, and the workers in the team had finished their work and were sitting under the big tree enjoying the cool shade.

"Look, isn't that Chang Kun?"

"Of course, weren't we going to hunt wild boars?"

"The wild boars have probably finished eating, right? Hahaha..."

A burst of jubilation erupted at the village entrance.

"I told you so! I'd eat shit if Chang Kun could even shoot a wild boar! Look at him, he didn't even carry a gun!"

"Did they lose the gun in the mountains? And Zhang's idiot son, did he lose him in the mountains too?"

"Oh dear, this won't do! How can Chang Kun just leave someone in the mountains!"

Jin Sanjia kept babbling on and on, trying his best to slander Chang Kun, completely forgetting how he used to call Chang Kun "Brother Kun" all the time.

Chang Kun slowly passed by the village entrance, ignoring the cacophony of questions coming from there—he could hear these people spewing nonsense from afar.

He doesn't have time to argue with these people.

At this moment, he recalled a saying from his past life: "I strive not to stand out from the crowd, but to stay away from those chickens."

Back in my own little courtyard.

Liu Meifen and Liu Meilin were busy skinning field mice and squirrels when they were suddenly shocked to see Chang Kun return home looking weak and listless.

"Son, what's wrong?"

Mothers are the most observant. They noticed bloodstains on Chang Kun's clothes, which he had gotten on when he gutted the wild boar.

"Xiao Kun is back." Liu Meilin nodded.

"Uncle," Chang Kun greeted, "Mom, get something to eat. I've been running around all morning and I'm starving."

"Ah! Okay, I just peeled some ground squirrels, so I'll stew two for you."

Liu Meifen looked Chang Kun up and down, and only felt relieved when she saw that he didn't seem to be injured.

"Xiao Qing, start the fire!" The little chores around the house are always assigned to the kids.

"Hey, big brother's back! Where's the wild boar?"

Chang Qing was excited to see his older brother and lifted his brother's clothes to look for wild boar.

"Go away, go start a fire! What wild boar could be hiding inside your clothes?" Chang Qing was ruthlessly chased away by his mother.

"Son, it's alright. That wild boar has legs; who knows which mountain it'll run off to? We have enough wild rabbits and rats to eat."

"That's right. Everyone says there are wild boars in the mountains, but I haven't heard of anyone in the village shooting one in the last two years. It's normal that they can't catch any."

Liu Meilin comforted Chang Kun, "Little Kun has made a lot of progress lately. I even got to eat greyhound meat when I came. Your mother and your sisters are praising you to the skies."

When Chang Mu heard that his older brother had returned, he came to the courtyard. Seeing that his brother was not carrying anything, he immediately took his brother's hand.

"Brother, I don't want to eat pork anymore either."

She overheard some adults chatting that morning about bears and wolves in the mountains, and she was terribly worried, fearing that her older brother might be in danger.

Chang Kun looked around, grinned, and felt a deep sense of comfort from his family.

"Where's Dad? Where did he go?"

"My brother-in-law went to catch the train for me, I'll be back in a bit."

The brigade borrowed an oxcart all morning, and Chang Dashan went to drive it back so that the Liu siblings could talk for a while.

"Uncle, what kind of car is that?" Chang Kun's eyes lit up.

"The oxcart, your brigade borrowed an oxcart, and it was all used up in one morning."

"Oh, that's perfect!"

Chang Kun laughed heartily. He had originally planned to borrow a small cart to slowly push the wild boar into the city to sell it, but now that he had an oxcart, he didn't have to exert any effort.

"Son, what's just right?"

"The oxcart is finally free! Let's go into the mountains and fetch wild boar!"

"What?"

"What?"

"What?"

"What?"

Liu Meifen didn't bother peeling the skin.

Liu Meilin opened her mouth.

Chang Mu gripped her elder brother's hand tightly with her fingers.

Chang Qing, forgetting about tending the fire, rushed to Chang Kun, his eyes sparkling as he stared at his elder brother.

"Really going to hunt a wild boar?" Liu Meifen's lips trembled. She didn't bother to wipe the bloodstains from her hands and grabbed Chang Kun's arm.

"Why would I lie to you?"

Chang Qing and Chang Mu jumped up, shouting:

"Oh, big brother is the best! Oh, big brother is the most amazing!"

Liu Meilin patted Chang Kun on the shoulder: "Good lad, better than your dad, hehe..."

Just then, Chang Dashan carried Chang Xiu into the courtyard and immediately heard his brother-in-law praising Chang Kun and comparing him to him. He snorted coldly.

"What? He's better than his dad again?"

"Look at you, you're such a grown man, running off into the deep mountains without a word. Don't you realize that if wild boars were so easy to hunt, every family in the village would be eating pork?"

"Where's the wild boar? Didn't even see a single bristle? You think killing a few greyhound rats makes you better than your dad?"
