Reborn in the 1980s: Nine Stunning Beauties Get Pregnant Before Marriage
Chapter 46 Layout Elimination Path
Just as Liang Meie put the wild boar down inside the house, her father-in-law, Old Li, heard the noise and came out to check.
"Where have you been in the middle of the night, a widow?" He tapped his pipe.
With so many bachelors in the village eyeing this pretty widow, he, as her father-in-law, couldn't help but worry.
Liang Meie cut off a piece of wild boar meat with alternating layers of fat and lean meat and threw it into her mother-in-law's wooden basin.
"Where else can I go? The wild boars have almost destroyed all the corn in our fields. If I don't go hunting with Chen Yongqiang, am I supposed to just wait to starve?"
The mother-in-law tried to smooth things over in a low voice: "Old man, Mei'e is doing this for the good of the family!"
Liang Meie ignored them and continued cutting the pork: "Tomorrow I'm going to the neighboring village to sell wild boar meat. Could you two please help look after the children? From now on, I'll make sure you have an endless supply of meat."
Old Li opened his mouth as if to say something, but his gaze fell on the bowl of bright red wild boar meat in his mother-in-law's arms.
The words that were on the tip of his tongue got stuck in his throat, and he didn't utter a sound.
"I finally managed to get in touch with Chen Yongqiang. His hunting rifles are very accurate, so there will be plenty of game in the future. If you two don't have that kind of foresight..." Liang Meie declared.
"Anyway, my brothers have already said they can take the three of us back home anytime."
Old Li understood perfectly well, so he didn't say anything more and turned to go back into the house.
The next morning, Chen Yongqiang pushed a wheelbarrow loaded with wild boar meat toward the town.
As he passed the earthen wall of the village primary school, he thought of Gao Yuanyuan, a teacher who came from the city.
It wasn't easy for this young woman to teach alone in the countryside. He casually cut off a piece of lean and fatty pork leg and headed towards the school building.
Gao Yuanyuan was washing up by the courtyard wall when she saw Chen Yongqiang from a distance and scolded him, "You dare to come here again?"
Chen Yongqiang stood there, stunned, his hand holding out the piece of meat hanging in mid-air: "The conditions in the village are tough, I'm bringing you some meat to help you recover."
"I don't need it, you can take it." Gao Yuanyuan didn't give Chen Yongqiang a friendly look.
Chen Yongqiang couldn't recall ever offending this female volunteer teacher, but he didn't argue much. He simply hung the meat on a wooden stake on the courtyard wall. "Keep it if you don't mind," he said, before turning to push his wheelbarrow.
"Don't think I'll forgive you just because you're nice to me!" Gao Yuanyuan shouted at his back, her voice filled with indescribable grievance.
Chen Yongqiang had already walked a distance, shaking his head in confusion, "Why does Teacher Gao have such a big problem with me?"
After a while, Chen Yongqiang stopped at the market entrance with his wheelbarrow, looking at the four baskets full of wild boar meat and he was at a loss.
Then he suddenly remembered Wang Guixiang. Didn't she have a regular vegetable stall at the east end of the market?
Liang Meie is responsible for traveling from village to village. If she also has a fixed stall, she won't have to worry about sales.
Chen Yongqiang felt a pang of guilt. Ultimately, Wang Guixiang's divorce was inextricably linked to him.
Now she raises her child alone at the market to make a living, and if she can help out a little, it can make up for some of the debts she owes.
After making up his mind, Chen Yongqiang didn't rush to set up a stall, but instead pushed his cart to the east end of the market.
We quickly found Wang Guixiang's stall, where she was bending over and arranging baskets of vegetables.
"Sister Guixiang." Chen Yongqiang stopped in front of the vegetable stall.
Hearing the voice, Wang Guixiang looked up, a hint of surprise in her eyes: "Yongqiang? You're at the market today too?"
Before explaining his purpose, Chen Yongqiang bent down to look at the vegetables on the stall: "How's business lately?"
Wang Guixiang wiped her hands with her apron and sighed softly, "The economy isn't doing very well."
She pointed to several vegetable stalls next door, "They all sell these common vegetables, which other stalls also have, so they don't fetch a high price."
The vegetables in the basket were fresh, but they were all too ordinary.
Chen Yongqiang turned around and lifted the tarpaulin covering the wheelbarrow. "We hunted three wild boars last night. Want to try selling these?"
These days, every family raises pigs to keep for the Lunar New Year, and it's rare to see pork stalls in the market on ordinary days.
Looking at the distinct red and white wild boar meat, Wang Guixiang hesitated, "This... I've never sold meat before."
"It's the same principle as selling vegetables. You're just setting up a stall anyway, so having more options means you have more ways to make a living," Chen Yongqiang explained.
The stall owner next door peeked out and saw several villagers who had come to the early market already gathered around.
An older woman carrying a shopping basket came over and asked, "How much is this pork?"
Chen Yongqiang unloaded a basket of wild boar meat: "This is wild boar from the mountains. It depends on what cut you want."
He picked up a piece of pork shoulder, "This kind is six cents a pound." Then he pointed to a piece of meat with alternating layers of fat and lean meat, "This kind is eight cents."
The woman stared at the glistening meat, pursing her lips, and gestured with her hand, saying, "Cut me this fattier piece."
Chen Yongqiang grabbed a machete: "How much do you want?"
The woman took out the change wrapped in her handkerchief, counted it, and said, "Give me two pounds to try first."
The blade fell, slicing off a piece of meat with alternating layers of fat and lean. Wang Guixiang quickly handed over the scale, watching Chen Yongqiang move the weight: "Two jin and one liang, I'll give you two jin."
Chen Yongqiang tied the meat with straw and handed it over, then turned to Wang Guixiang and said, "Sister Guixiang, you come and collect the money."
He readily gave up his spot. Wang Guixiang looked at the money she had just received, then glanced at the customers who were gradually drawn in by the aroma of the meat, and finally nodded: "Okay, I'll give it a try."
Chen Yongqiang pushed the wheelbarrow and pointed to the other end of the market: "I'm going to the state-run restaurant to ask if they want any wild game. Sister Guixiang, you keep an eye on things for now."
As soon as the wheels started turning, he turned back and added, "If it sells well, from now on, all the wild game I have will go to you first."
Chen Yongqiang pushed his wheelbarrow to the back door of the state-run restaurant and happened to run into Lao Zhou unloading vegetables.
"Master Zhou, I've brought you some wild game today." Chen Yongqiang lifted the cover.
Old Zhou peeked out and gasped, "Good heavens! So much? My little restaurant can't possibly handle it all!"
"Take as much as you want." Chen Yongqiang didn't expect to sell it all to Lao Zhou.
"It's fresh... How about we keep half a carcass? There have been a lot of cadres coming from the county lately, so it's good to have some wild game." Old Zhou looked at the meat in the basket.
Chen Yongqiang unloaded the meat. "I'll sell the rest at the market. If you need it often in the future, I'll save it for you first."
"You hunter have really got the business sense these days," Old Zhou joked.
"Just trying to make a living." Chen Yongqiang chuckled, but his eyes revealed shrewdness.
He had already calculated that the state-run restaurants wouldn't need the whole head of the product, but with this stable sales channel, he wouldn't have to worry about the bulk of the product in the future.
Old Zhou ended up ordering eighty jin of meat, which, at six mao per jin, came to a total of forty-eight yuan.
"I'll take these two wild boar stomachs separately. Save them for me whenever you get wild boar stomachs in the future." Old Zhou counted out another fifty-five yuan and gave it to Chen Yongqiang.
"No problem!" Chen Yongqiang agreed, as he would have to deal with the other two wild boar stomachs himself.
