Global Mercenaries: Starting from the Russia-Ukraine War

Chapter 1: Cannon Fodder with 7 Days Left to Live

In the muddy trenches of the Eastern Ukrainian battlefield, Lu Ye gripped his jammed AK-74M tightly, the sound of artillery shells whistling past his ears. His mission was to hold this defensive line that could be torn apart at any moment, along with three or four cannon fodder.

"boom!"

A violent explosion rang out overhead, and dirt mixed with shrapnel rained down on his helmet. Lu Ye instinctively hunched over, pressing his back tightly against the cold trench wall.

The smell of gunpowder and blood in the air, along with the blood splattered on his face by his comrade Andrei before his death, constantly reminded him that this was a real battlefield.

"Damn it, this crappy gun jammed again!" Lu Ye cursed through gritted teeth, pulling the bolt hard, but only three bullets remained in the rusty magazine.

He was a fresh cannon fodder who arrived three days ago.

A month ago, Lu Ye collapsed at his desk at the company. His colleagues helped take him to the hospital, where the doctor told him that he had a malignant tumor in his brain and could die at any time.

Upon learning the news, the company immediately laid him off. His wife, understanding his hardships, decided to run off with another man to ease his burden, leaving behind only their 3-year-old daughter.

Desperate, he unexpectedly stumbled upon a recruitment ad for a polar bear: "Three-month contract, 100,000 euros in compensation, room and board included."

So he gritted his teeth, handed his daughter over to his parents, and then followed the intermediary to smuggle himself to Polar Bear, along with dozens of others.

In a certain polar bear area, after a short training session, it was only at the training camp that I realized the rewards were all a lie!

Compared to other cannon fodder, Lu Ye was sent to the Eastern Ukrainian battlefield three days ago because of his outstanding shooting skills.

"Hey! Chinese guys! Left! The enemy is coming up!" Captain Vasily's roar rang in his ears. He was the only regular soldier among the five men in their team.

Lu Ye slowly looked up and saw a dozen enemy soldiers in camouflage uniforms crouching low as they rushed across the open ground. Their guns spat fire, and bullets hit the sandbags in front of the trenches, kicking up clouds of dust.

Startled, Lu Ye quickly shrank back.

"Hey! Stand up if you don't want to die!" Vasily glared, spewing profanities at Lu Ye: "Fight back! Now!"

Then the cannon fodder in the trenches fell one by one, some shot in the head, others riddled with bullets. In the blink of an eye, only he and Vasily remained.

Lu Ye's heart pounded wildly, and fear surged like the sea, engulfing him completely.

"Bang!"

A bullet grazed his helmet, tearing a piece of flesh from his ear. Lu Ye abruptly dropped to the ground, his fingers trembling as he reached for the dagger at his waist.

"It's over..." Lu Ye closed his eyes, the sound of his daughter calling him "Daddy" flashing through his mind. "It's better that she's dead, as long as I got the money!"

Just then, a cold, mechanical voice suddenly rang in his mind:

[Ding! Host detected to be in a near-death situation, meeting binding requirements. The [Global Mercenary System] is in the process of binding...]

Lu Ye was stunned for a moment, thinking he was hallucinating. But then a semi-transparent blue panel really appeared before his eyes:

"System?! Points = lifespan?" Lu Ye's heart skipped a beat, and his mind was in complete chaos.

"Hey! Don't just stand there, get up! Damn it, to the left, fight back!" Vasily kicked Lu Ye with his leg.

Lu Ye suddenly realized: "Activate it! Activate it for me!"

[New Player Gift Pack is now available, granting you 1 minute each of Melee Mastery, Firearms Mastery, and Shooting Mastery]

In an instant, Lu Ye's mind was filled with many things that didn't belong to him, and his body felt like it had been reformatted.

"Hua Zai, you're asking for it!" Vasily's curse hadn't even finished when Lu Ye suddenly stood up. He flung aside the rusty AK-74M and precisely snatched Ivan's rifle with his right hand.

The moment the cold gun pressed against his palm, his instinctive mastery of firearms caused his fingers to fly across the keyboard, adjusting the safety, fire selector, and scope in one fluid motion, without wasting even 0.1 seconds.

"boom!"

Another shell exploded outside the trench, the blast wave making Lu Ye's eardrums ache. But this time, he didn't cower in place trembling.

"Bang!" A burst of blood erupted from the forehead of the enemy soldier at the forefront, and his body fell into the mud like a sack.

He didn't even have time to pull the trigger.

Vasily's curse was stuck in his throat, his eyes wide like saucers: "You fucking..."

Lu Ye ignored him, slightly shifting the muzzle of his gun to lock onto the second enemy soldier holding a submachine gun.

The moment the enemy aimed his gun at the trench, Lu Ye's bullet pierced his chest. The precise shot rendered the enemy immobile instantly; he collapsed to the ground, struggled for a moment, and then fell still.

[Kill 2 enemies, score +200]

The cold, mechanical sound echoed in my mind, but at that moment it sounded like heavenly music.

"Damn it!" Vasily cursed, unleashing a furious barrage of fire from his PKM machine gun. "When the hell did you become so accurate?"

Lu Ye didn't have time to pay attention to him.

Out of the corner of Lu Ye's eye, he saw an enemy soldier pulling the pin on a grenade, his arm already raised in the air.

His instinctive marksmanship allowed him to anticipate the grenade's trajectory, lower his gun, and the bullet precisely struck the grenade, landing it among the enemy ranks.

"boom!"

A violent explosion rocked the enemy ranks, sending mud and bits of flesh flying two meters into the air.

The two enemy soldiers hiding behind had no time to react and were thrown into the air by the shockwave, crashing heavily onto the open ground and falling silent.

[Kill 2 enemies, score +200]

[Shooting Mastery Countdown: 30 seconds]

The pale blue numbers danced in the corner of my vision, like the urgent beat of a drum.

Lu Ye didn't have time to pay attention to him. In his field of vision, three enemy soldiers were crouching low and flanking from the left, trying to get around to the flank of the trench.

His single-handed magazine change was so fast it was almost a blur. His mastery of combat made his body even more coordinated. The rusty magazine was pulled out in an instant, and the new magazine clicked into place with a thud.

"Bang!"

The bullet pierced the throat of the enemy soldier on the far left. The man clutched his neck and fell into the mud, twitching a few times before going still.

[Kill 1 enemies, score +100]

[New Player Quest Progress: Completed]

Vasily's machine gun suppressed the enemy in front, but four more enemy soldiers rushed up from the right, holding grenade launchers with the safety pulled.

"Watch out for grenades!" Vasily roared as he lunged toward the crater.
