The apocalypse begins with a dungeon game.

Chapter 26 I am willing to dedicate the rest of my life

"Bang!"

The wooden door was kicked open from the outside by Li Can.

The room was now empty, as if the figure he had just seen was just an illusion.

Could it be that I'm too tired and am hallucinating?

Li Can looked around. Inside the storage room, there were several rows of shelves, filled with all sorts of file folders and books.

Near the window, in the corner, stands a metal combination lock box about half a person's height, now open to the outside.

He took the blood-stained key out of his pocket and looked at the open cabinet door.

This should be the cabinet that Fang Yi mentioned before he died, but unexpectedly, he no longer needs to use the key to open it.

"Isn't this key for opening safes?"

He quickly squatted down in front of the cabinet, which contained several notebooks that looked like files and medical records, all haphazardly arranged inside.

At the very bottom was a flat metal briefcase, which was locked. Li Can tentatively turned the key into the lock.

"Click."

The latch opened smoothly from the outside, lifting the top cover to reveal several rows of blue cylindrical potions, each about the length of a human thumb.

"Phew..." He let out a long sigh of relief. Thankfully, the things were still there.

This should be the "evidence" that Fang Yi found.

The medicine was arranged in two rows in a box secured by foam, with five slots on top and five slots on the bottom.

But at this point, only the last five tubes, which were not neatly arranged, remained.

"What could it be?" He held the blue cylinder in front of him and examined it closely.

The liquid is not pure; it contains a large number of impurities, and a network of nerve-like structures dominates its composition.

A white label was affixed to the cap at the top of the medicine bottle. He squinted to make out the words written on it in small print:

"Resurrection potion".

"Hiss!" Li Can was immediately shocked. This thing had really been developed? The fantasy of bringing people back to life had actually become a reality for them.

However, even with the labels and explanations already in place, Li Can still had some doubts. What if it was just a defective product from an experiment? He would need to find an opportunity to test it and verify it.

But where did the missing doses of medicine go? Who injected them?

He quickly scanned the faces in his mind, but found no one who matched up.

Among the NPC characters I am familiar with, are there any who have already been resurrected?

He fell into deep thought, his peripheral vision glancing inadvertently at the top of the safe, where a human hair lay, glistening in the sunlight.

It was a short white hair.

An old man… no, Li Can steadied himself, and the image of the white-haired young man who had been wearing a mask from the moment he appeared until his disappearance suddenly flashed into his mind.

"White discharge".

He disappeared after the first round of riddles and answers from the NPC Granny in the open space. At this moment, this strand of hair made Li Can focus all his thoughts on him.

For some reason, Li Can's intuition told him that it must have been him who fell.

Looking at the outward-opening combination safe, he couldn't help but suspect that the figure that had flashed by in the storage room earlier was him.

This person is too mysterious, and Li Can knows too little about him, which makes him a little confused.

Since he has the password to open the safe, it means that he now has just as much information as I do.

In fact, they have already taken the lead.

The more Li Can thought about it, the more suffocated she felt.

Fang Yi only gave him a key and didn't tell him the password, so another player opened the cabinet beforehand.

But the most crucial medicine is still there. What exactly did Bai Zhuo take from it?

If he didn't take anything with him, why would he come here?

"Huh, what's this...?"

Li Can closed the suitcase containing the "Resurrection" potion and tucked it between his legs and chest.

He was rummaging through the remaining notebooks in the cabinet when he suddenly discovered something incredible.

"Seriously? People actually keep diaries these days?"

He opened the notebook with the kraft paper cover, and the first page was signed with the name "Fang Yi".

He flipped through the pages and found a record of Lin Wanyan's hospital experience, which was documented by Fang Yi and was related to the key figure in the mystery.

The first few pages contain Fang Yi's own experiences and insights into his medical career.

October 1, 2007, Wednesday, sunny.

"This is my third year working at Wenxin Mental Hospital. I am grateful to my mentor; without her, I would not have achieved what I have today."

"Looking back on my life of more than thirty years, I have found that every human being develops a kind of mental illness in their heart because of their past experiences."

"They may think of themselves as normal people, and just drift through life, growing old, getting sick, and dying in a daze."

"They may experience psychological trauma in their childhood, adolescence, youth, or even old age."

"It's not just physical ailments that deserve attention and treatment; psychological trauma is the most painful hidden disease."

"I am willing to dedicate the rest of my life to becoming someone like Teacher Lin, illuminating others and helping those who are lost in the spiritual world to regain a new life."

When Li Can saw the words on this page, he was imperceptibly touched.

Fang Yi is a good doctor; he has not let Lin Wanyan down.

But can his grand ideology really succeed in such a morbid society?

Li Can became somewhat agitated as she read, and turned the diary back to the next page.

The diary records a wide range of time periods, so much so that the front pages have yellowed and the handwriting has become blurred and mottled.

It only looks relatively new as the date approaches.

[March 19, 2013, Friday, Cloudy]

"After a busy day at work, I was surprised to see my teacher's name on today's list of admitted patients."

"She was such a beautiful, outstanding, and strong-willed woman, how could she fall ill?"

"I heard from the attending physician who treated her that she seemed to be in very poor condition and she did not admit that she was sick, but the teacher's family unanimously believed that she needed to receive treatment."

"How could this happen? I need to find time to see her tomorrow."

"I don't believe she was admitted to the hospital."

"Recently, something else has been puzzling me at the hospital."

"Patients who have been admitted and discharged over the past few years have all mysteriously disappeared from society..."

"I asked the people around me, and they all said it was normal."

"Am I the only one who feels something's wrong? This is simply absurd. Is there something wrong with my mental state, or is there something wrong with them?"

Li Can frowned upon seeing this message; it seemed Dr. Fang Yi was a bit slow to realize what was going on.

According to what Li Can knew from the inside story, this hospital was a complete "shady clinic".

It seems that the secret experiments in the basement had been going on for quite some time since 2013.

Therefore, not all the medical staff in this hospital are colluding together; some are completely kept in the dark.

That's true. If he were to be the villain here, he would only choose a few trusted confidants.

Only those who are "like-minded" and share common interests can work together.

Someone as single-minded as Fang Yi, who only wants to dedicate himself to relieving humanity's hidden ailments, would definitely not be chosen to join his team.

Li Can flipped through the pages again, only to find that the date jumped to a week later, and Fang Yi hadn't made any more entries in that time.

What happened? Wasn't he planning to go see Lin Wanyan the next day?
