Game of Thrones: Joffrey the Chosen
Chapter 79 The Messenger of Light
Beneath the muddy gate lay a charred ruin; the once bustling port had been transformed into a realm of death.
"Your left hand is useless! You can't even wield a sword."
Jaime pointed down with his good arm and kept babbling on and on, fully embodying the fine traditions of the Lannister family.
"If I hadn't been injured, how could the hound have had to do this?"
If you hadn't given away so many kills, would the situation have gotten to this point?
It seems that unless he loses an arm completely, he won't be able to change his spoiled personality.
With the Dragon Gate under siege, Ed selected a hundred cavalrymen and ordered them to exit through the Lion Gate, maneuver northward, and attack the enemy's flank.
"Crigan, take your men and go."
The hound was very satisfied with the arrangement.
After all, smoke and fire were billowing everywhere on the muddy side of the city, burning all the way from the river to the city walls. This shocking scene made his lips twitch.
As Joffrey's bodyguard, he couldn't leave his post.
Now that there's a reason to move to a different place, that would be perfect.
The price for the Hound's departure was the arrival of Jaime.
Restless, he grabbed a set of armor from someone else downstairs, intending to sneak out.
As a result, the hound recognized his arrogant posture at a glance, grabbed his right arm, and pinched it hard.
Then James came over with his arms crossed.
"It's just a dog my dad keeps, how dare it treat me like this? Once my arm heals, I'll skin you alive!"
Joffrey ignored these scattered grumbles.
After a brief period of disarray, Stannis's troops regrouped.
But this time they did not launch an attack immediately. Instead, they spread out on the riverbank, appearing ready to advance across the entire front.
Meanwhile, several dozen people brought a pile of relatively intact wooden planks and built a woodpile in front of the battle formation.
Then they started circling around that pile of stuff, and every now and then someone would throw something into it.
"Is it cursing us?" James leaned closer. "That Red God ritual?"
"It looks like it to me," Joffrey said.
Although the woman in the red robe wasn't there, who knows if these people would get some strange bonuses after they finished.
Joffrey wasn't planning on taking any risks.
"Flame-breathing crossbow."
Several burning fire pots roared and smashed over.
If you set my ship ahead of time, then I'll set your altar ahead of time.
With a loud bang, sparks flew everywhere.
A knight wearing a robe embroidered with red and gold foxes was splashed with flames, screamed and rolled on the ground, while people around him stomped on the flames on his body.
A burst of snickers erupted from the city wall.
Before the laughter had even subsided, a man strode forward like a soldier.
Stannis Baratheon.
He wore a set of gray plate armor, with a fiery red heart engraved on his breastplate, the same one as his banner.
A long sword hung at his waist, with a large, square ruby set in the hilt.
He wore a crimson gold crown on his head, the edges of which were deliberately shaped like flames, barely covering the remaining ring of his short black hair.
Looking down from the top of the city wall, one can see the smooth, bald patch in the center.
Stannis ignored the knight who was still rolling around and simply slowly drew his longsword from his waist.
The moment it was drawn, the sword began to flash with an eerie light.
First it was a dark red like embers, then a bright orange like newborn flames, and finally it turned into a blazing white light.
Even the surrounding air seemed to sense the heat emanating from the sword, and began to distort and tremble, then change its glow.
Why does Red God always have these cool gadgets?
James whistled, "This stuff's great!"
"Xiao Qiao, after the war is over, can I have some fun first?"
Because he was taller, he was more confident, and his words were more piercing than those of the shorter brother.
Joffrey just kept his eyes glued to the other side.
There cannot be two suns in the sky.
There can only be one king on the Iron Throne.
Stannis raised his gleaming longsword and pointed it forward.
The sword's edge sliced through the air, leaving a scorching trail.
His soldiers roared in unison and charged towards King's Landing once more.
The crossbowmen on the city wall began to fire.
Joffrey also picked up his repeating crossbow, rested it on the battlement, and aimed down.
James just stood there, watching helplessly.
He himself had said that the crossbow was a coward's weapon, and now those words were like a boomerang, firmly nailed to his head.
Leading the charge were still the regular troops from Dragonstone.
They wore chainmail and pointed helmets, and held up shields to withstand the rain of arrows, drawing the most firepower.
But the time they gained with their lives was not appreciated by their comrades.
Those pirates were very cunning. They would take three steps forward and one step back, shrinking their entire bodies behind the large round shield as much as possible, leaving only one eye exposed to peek at the battle.
This business is becoming increasingly unprofitable; once you get to the city walls, it's difficult to come back.
But the defenders on the city walls were in no better shape.
The mercenaries, intimidated by Stannis's infamous reputation, dared not surrender, and with Ed keeping a close watch on them, they had no choice but to seek refuge in areas with fewer enemy troops.
The new recruits fared even worse; they were lured into training for a few days by inspiring slogans, only to be immediately dragged onto the city wall.
The indiscriminate bombing, shooting, and stabbing created a bloody and terrifying scene that terrified them.
After seeing a little blood and getting a minor injury, they cried and screamed, hiding under the wall.
After all, the best armor was given to the capital's garrison and experienced veterans. They were only given a helmet and a cotton armor, so one arrow would be enough to kill them instantly.
"Bang bang bang..."
Several burly axemen rushed to the city gate and began to hack at it in turn.
"They're desperate," the gossipy guy commented again, "They've even resorted to this method."
Apart from Jaime, everyone in and around the city was extremely anxious.
Because upstream on the Blackwater River, countless rafts appeared on the river, and the people on them were paddling desperately with simple oars, heading towards the north bank.
Enemy? Friend?
Or perhaps both.
A single fire could not possibly burn the Royal Guard to the grounds, and the Stormlands army still managed to obtain enough materials to quickly produce these river-crossing tools.
As they approached the riverbank, the soldiers jumped into the waist-deep water, carrying their armor and weapons, and waded ashore, one step at a time.
Some fearless individuals, dressed in full protective gear, sat on rafts and paddled over.
As a result, two of them capsized halfway through the journey, sinking into the water with a gurgling sound and never resurfacing.
A knight, carrying a banner with a blazing red heart, galloped towards the landing troops from the city walls.
He reined in his horse, seemingly talking to the soldiers on the shore.
Then he was pulled off his horse.
The storm-landing army let out a shout and charged directly at Stannis's flank.
The troops climbing the wall had already halted their advance when they saw so many people suddenly appear, and now they were thrown into complete disarray.
"They started fighting!" James began to describe the obvious facts.
The defenders of King's Landing laid down their weapons and began to watch the spectacle.
Not all Stormtroopers launched an attack; most of them looked bewildered and had no idea what was going on.
However, some people were swept up in the fray and rushed forward without fully understanding what was happening, eventually becoming enraged.
The soldiers at the forefront raised the flag and shouted slogans.
"Long live the griffin! Long live the griffin!"
The Clinton family.
Joffrey recalled Varys's intelligence and couldn't help but sigh.
"Even in a chaotic country, there are loyal ministers!"
