Miss Witch is broke again.
Chapter 4 Not Eating Beef
As dusk settled over Nangang, colorful neon lights illuminated the sky one after another, while countless skytracks, like rainbow bridges, wove intricate and beautiful patterns across the heavens.
Those were aerial passages built by the witch to maintain transportation between human cities on the surface.
The world of witches is located on a floating island in the atmosphere or even in outer space. Because this dazzling star is the birthplace of witches, most witches consider it their home.
Even so, many witches have moved their floating islands to other dimensions or worlds. Earth is too small, while witches need vast territories, so many witches go to other worlds to develop their own domains.
Coastal cities like Nangang are not particularly outstanding on the surface; their only notable feature is their abundance of rare fish.
"Su Li, why don't we use spatial magic to teleport to where we need to go? Why do we have to walk?"
"Because only witches do that."
"How long have you been living in human society, sister? You seem so familiar with human lifestyles."
"I'm really not a witch! Also, you're not allowed to try to outrun the hovercar."
"Hehe, the cat is just testing whether it can run faster using magic."
Su Li rubbed her forehead listlessly, while on the floating car in the distance, several ghost fire teenagers were questioning their existence, thinking they were hallucinating. How could there be a petite girl racing against a floating car? That's supersonic speed!
"Su Li, how much longer do we have to walk? The cat's hungry, the cat's hungry..."
After racing with the floating car, Catfia's stomach growled even louder, and the noisy Cat Lantern Witch made Su Li want to cover her ears.
The first lesson Su Li learned after becoming a witch was never to reason with the Cat Lantern Witch, especially when the cat is hungry.
They arrived. Su Li stopped, while Mao Feiya looked up at the not-so-bustling street.
In the sparse halo of light, several shop doors were half-closed, and the signs above flickered weakly, like an old man on his deathbed struggling to take his last breath.
There were very few people on the streets, and even when young people passed by, they would quickly walk away with disdain. This place was too old and had none of the liveliness of the newly built urban areas. The streetlights there were powered by magic, brighter than daytime, and could even come out and transform into strange-looking animals that flew around.
Nangang New Town is always full of vitality, with colorful skyscrapers, GG signs on the streets all featuring beautiful virtual idols, and a constant flow of vehicles like the city's veins, never stopping.
In contrast, the old town of Nangang seems to have stood still for decades, never disturbed by the outside world. Although it was also the center of Nangang decades ago.
Su Li's eyes were full of nostalgia as she walked into a noodle shop with practiced ease.
The noodle shop owner, a middle-aged man, was momentarily at a loss when he saw two exceptionally beautiful young women enter.
Especially Su Li, dressed in gorgeous clothes, made the noodle shop owner think she was a real witch. However, witches rarely appear in human society, so he thought he was overthinking it.
"Boss, one bowl, no, two bowls of beef noodles, extra spicy, no bean sprouts."
Su Li turned to look at the cat Fia who had followed her in, and asked her with a happy smile:
"Fia the cat, have you ever had beef noodles?"
Cat Fia's eyes widened. The witch had an extreme love for food, and in order to make delicious food, she would go to great lengths to venture into other worlds to capture all kinds of extraordinary creatures, and even powerful dragons would appear on the witch's menu.
But to come to a surface city and eat a regular bowl of beef noodles, that's probably an experience only a witch from the last century could have.
Seeing the cat's surprised eyes, Su Li felt a surge of joy. Even a witch like her had never experienced street food before, so it was time for this cat to try some ordinary people's food. However, she underestimated the cat-lamp witch's chaotic personality.
"But cats only like to eat dried fish! Cats don't eat beef." It's clear that the cat-lamp witch is not appreciative.
The world is vast, but dried fish is the biggest. This was the second piece of knowledge Su Li learned today, which didn't quite put her in a good mood.
The noodle shop owner, upon hearing the cat Fia's antics, instead revealed a kind smile; the short girl's commotion only made the shop feel more vibrant.
"Little sister, don't be impatient. We don't have dried fish, but my seafood noodles are delicious."
"Is there any fish? The cat wants to eat fish."
The uncle laughed heartily: "Watch me make you a rainbow trout noodle soup. Even the cat witch in the sky would rave about it."
Cat Fia nodded thoughtfully, then asked the uncle:
"Have you ever seen a witch before, sir?"
The noodle shop owner had just taken a trout with iridescent scales out of the refrigerator when he heard Cat Fia's words, and a sense of nostalgia washed over him.
Decades ago, witches could travel freely between the Sky Island and the surface without restriction. That was the golden age of South Harbor, and even witches were just ordinary diners.
With the arrival of the witches' grand expedition to colonize other worlds, the surface and the adjacent alternate dimensions have been fully developed, and their resources no longer hold much value, thus losing their importance to the witches. Furthermore, due to the regulations of the Witch Organization, the witches on the sky islands rarely return to the surface, as applying for permits is far too cumbersome.
"I've seen them before, back when I was young. Those witches were just like you, little sister; they could make quite a scene when they argued."
Catfia pressed on, "Have you ever seen a witch with a tail? The kind with a really big tail?"
The noodle shop owner was stumped by this bizarre question, scratched his head, and answered:
"Most of the witches I've met are cat witches, rat witches, or dog witches. I don't really remember any witches with particularly large tails."
Fia the cat was dejected for a moment, but then she cheered up and continued to clamor for fish.
Su Li understood what Cat Fia wanted to ask, but she didn't care. How could the treasure of the great witch be so easily found?
The noodle shop owner quickly prepared two bowls of noodles, and the steaming noodles were placed in front of the two girls. The aroma alone made Su Li's fatigue from the journey disappear.
Su Li picked up her chopsticks and ate the beef noodles with practiced ease, leaving even the noodle shop owner puzzled. It reminded him of someone who used to come here often to eat his noodles, but that person hadn't been here for several days.
Catfia shook her head; even the Cat Lantern Witch found the rainbow trout noodles in front of her delicious.
Nearly transparent, iridescent fish slices topped the noodles, their pearly texture still retaining a faint iridescent glow. The broth at the edges was translucent gold, with just the right amount of light, and the entire bowl of noodles radiated a visible platinum-like steam.
Rainbow trout are fish that contain a trace of magic, and the fact that the noodle shop owner, an ordinary human, can make such a dish shows that his skills must have been highly praised by witches in the past.
Sure enough, Catfia was like an impatient cat, eating in such an unrefined manner that soup splattered all over her face, while the noodle shop owner laughed heartily, as he hadn't seen such a scene in a long time.
Ten minutes later, Cat Fia slumped completely in the chair, burping, and said:
"Mmm, the cat is full. Uncle's cooking is amazing."
Su Li was much more reserved in her eating than the cat, and then calmly paid the bill. Fortunately, the two bowls of noodles didn't cost much, otherwise, with her current wallet, she probably could only take the cat to the sea to catch fish for dinner.
As a witch and a cat lantern, Nekofia gets sleepy after eating and drinking her fill. If she didn't remember that she was still in human society, she would have taken out her portable cat bed and gone to sleep long ago.
"Su Li, the cat wants to sleep. Do you have a place for it to stay?"
Su Li was already used to Cat Fia's overly friendly manner. She apologized to the noodle shop owner, as the cat was completely oblivious to the occasion when she was being noisy. Fortunately, the noodle shop owner quite liked the boisterous Cat Fia and kindly advised them to go home and rest early.
Su Li pulled the cat-lamp witch, whose eyes were almost closed, out of the shop and disappeared into the dim shadows of the street. At this moment, the noodle shop uncle belatedly realized something.
"A witch with a big tail? Isn't that a fox? I remember there used to be a very famous fox fairy witch in South Port City."
The noodle shop owner was a kind-hearted man and wanted to chase after the two girls to tell them.
What puzzled him was how the two people who had just left the store had disappeared so quickly. Was he getting old? Or were young people these days just so agile?
