Chapter 99 The O'Connor Brothers

Chapter 99 The O'Connor Brothers

O'Connor Residence.

Under the moonlight, the bluish-gray stone walls gleamed coldly, and the pointed tower pierced the night sky, with the O'Connor family's black and white double lion crest hanging at its top.

The main building was brightly lit and so quiet that only the sound of footsteps and the flickering of candlelight could be heard.

At this moment, an elderly man with gray hair slowly walked over.

Her hair was meticulously combed back, and she wore a well-fitting black butler uniform. Her posture was upright and her steps were steady.

Behind him followed four guards in light armor, each carrying a corner of a heavy black coffin, their every step heavy and solemn.

The butler led the guards, carrying the coffin, and slowly drove into the main hall.

The hall is spacious and grand, with a marble floor that reflects light like a mirror. Exquisitely carved columns line both sides, and antique vases and bronze statues are placed in the corners.

A figure stood on the steps with his back to them.

He was tall and imposing, calm and dignified; even just his back view made people hesitant to approach him.

This man was none other than George O'Connor, the head of the O'Connor family.

The black coffin was placed steadily on the stone slab with a dull thud.

The butler bowed respectfully, his face filled with fear, and called out in a trembling voice.

"Master, Third Master... has gone home."

George slowly turned around, revealing a resolute and profound face. His deep eyes were as sharp as an eagle's, exuding an imposing aura without anger, and the atmosphere around him instantly plummeted to freezing point.

"Summers, what on earth is going on?!"

George's voice was low and filled with barely suppressed anger; every word struck Summers' heart like a heavy hammer.

Although Summers had served two generations of the O'Connor family patriarchs, he was completely overwhelmed by George's imposing presence and knelt down, sobbing as he spoke.

"Master, news from the Mage's Guild... Third Master died in his office from an overdose of Silver Carat, and... he also raped and tortured a female employee of the guild to death."

"What?!"

George's forehead veins bulged, and his anger seemed about to burst out of his chest.

The O'Connor family invested a great deal of resources to help Zefer advance to the rank of a full-fledged mage and to build connections within the Mage Guild.

Now that Zeffer is dead, not only has all the previous investment been wasted, but this scandal has also severely tarnished the reputation of the O'Connor family, a double blow.

However, George, who had been in charge of the family for many years and was exceptionally well-mannered, calmed down completely by simply closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, and slowly asked.

"Zeff isn't stupid. He knows all too well the dangers of silver ray. How could he possibly overdose? What's going on here?"

Summers hesitated for a moment, organizing his thoughts before responding.

"According to a report from an inside source within the family, the law enforcement team's investigation results are in: the case has been classified as Third Master's accidental death caused by an emotional breakdown and a retaliatory overdose of medication."

Summers then added.

"There are multiple eyewitnesses to this incident, including a female employee named Linda, who was also nearly assaulted by Third Master."

"Loss of emotional control?"

George's gaze sharpened, keenly grasping the key point, his tone icy.

Why did he lose control of his emotions?

Summers didn't dare to look up and said in a low voice.

Several monks who were on good terms with the family revealed that the conflict arose because the Third Master looked down on the Lynx Academy's new members for being from out of town.

Professor Morris found out and scolded Third Master. Later, he sent Chairman Trick to come and slap Third Master in public.

"Sir, as you know, Professor Morris and President Patrick have an exceptionally good relationship."

George frowned and muttered in a low voice.

"What's the name of the new member of the Lynx Academy?"

"Mark is a commoner from Pinewood Town who has just been promoted to a professional mage and has officially registered his identity with the association."

George's brow furrowed even more.

Looking back on the whole thing, I have a vague feeling that something is not right.

It's not uncommon for Zeph to clash with a newly minted monk from the countryside, but why would the Lynx Academy accept such an ordinary monk?

Time slips away, bit by bit.

Summers didn't dare to breathe, feeling extremely uncomfortable.

Just then, a flirtatious voice suddenly came from the entrance of the hall, breaking the oppressive atmosphere.

"Brother, it seems you're in trouble."

George and Summers turned their heads at the same time, and a figure stepped out of the darkness.

He was a middle-aged man with a neat mustache, dressed in a well-fitting black uniform, with a peculiar bird beak bone pendant hanging on his chest. His eyes were sinister, and a half-smile played on the corners of his mouth.

Summers was shocked and quickly got up, waving away the guards and maids around him. He then left the hall himself and closed the heavy door.

Bang!

The doors closed, and the light in the hall dimmed instantly, leaving only the glow of the crystal chandelier, which cast the shadows of the two people on the wall, making the atmosphere even more eerie and oppressive.

George's face was so dark it could drip water, and he stared at the newcomer, speaking in an icy tone.

"Eugene! The Adventurers' Guild is already watching you, and you dare to come back?"

Eugene's smile remained unchanged. He didn't even glance at the coffin, and walked straight to the bottom of the steps in the center of the hall, looking up at George.

"What's there to be afraid of? They're just a bunch of rabble."

As he spoke, Eugene lifted his foot to step onto the stairs, but he was stopped by a cold look from George.

His aura suddenly became sharp and oppressive, making it hard to breathe, as if he was about to explode at any moment.

Eugene, however, showed no fear, his smile calm as he spoke softly.

"The Lord wants to cooperate with you."

"!"

George's pupils suddenly dilated, his aura instantly became chaotic, and an expression of disbelief appeared on his face. He was speechless for a moment.

George composed himself and refused in a deep voice.

"The O'Connor family has nothing to do with you anymore, and there's no need to discuss cooperation."

"us?"

Eugene chuckled, climbed the steps without any hindrance, and moved closer to George, speaking in a low voice tinged with sarcasm and resentment.

"Brother, you are just as heartless as our father."

"My father sent me there to show his loyalty to the Lord."

"And in order to protect yourself, you sent your own son over there."

George felt as if his deepest, most hidden wound had been touched, and his face turned pale instantly, his eyes filled with guilt and pain.

But Eugene didn't stop; he continued to whisper enticing words.

"Do you know? The Lord is very pleased with your son's body, which is why he sent me here to discuss cooperation with you, rather than... forcing you to comply."

George's body trembled slightly as his inner fear was stirred. Finally, he slowly closed his eyes, his tone one of resignation.

"How do you want to cooperate?"

"It's very simple."

Eugene smiled with satisfaction.

"Soon, there will be a large-scale crackdown operation. You and the council only need to act at the appropriate time."

"And we will help you eliminate all your political enemies. When the Glover family is weakened, you can smoothly transform Surge City from a lord city into an autonomous city and take full control of the power."

George was torn. The so-called cooperation was nothing but betrayal by an insider, but the temptation of controlling a city was irresistible. More importantly, he had no power to refuse.

Finally, after a moment of silence, George glanced at the bird beak pendant on Eugene's chest and said warily.

"Sure, but why should I trust you? Don't talk to me about signing some kind of notarized contract; I don't believe in that stuff."

"The second-tier 'Judge' of the 'Justice' pathway doesn't believe in the Just Contract, haha!"

Eugene mocked George mercilessly, but the latter remained expressionless and unmoved.

Then, Eugene's smile faded, and he took out a palm-sized, jet-black scale from his pocket and handed it to George.

"This is your deposit. I'm sure you're familiar with it."

"This is!"

George's pupils contracted sharply when he saw the black scales. He snatched the scales and gently stroked them with his fingertips, his face instantly filled with greed.

Eugene glanced disdainfully at his older brother, turned and left, shouting at George with his back to him.

"There's one more thing. Help me make a connection. I need to purchase a batch of grain from Henderson Trading Company."

"In exchange, I'll help you get rid of that new employee of Morris's, as revenge for our brother."

""

As soon as he finished speaking, Eugene disappeared outside the door, leaving George alone in the center of the hall, clutching the scales in his palm, his expression uncertain.
