A certain Hogwarts professor of runes
Chapter 5 Finalized
Silence returned to the principal's office.
After a long while, Dumbledore seemed to come to his senses; he had made his decision.
Dumbledore carefully chose his words, "I'm sorry, Felix, Professor Bubbaje has no intention of retiring..."
Felix looked disappointed.
"However," Dumbledore quickly added, "it's clear you're quite skilled in ancient runes."
"Yes, Headmaster." Felix thought of something, suppressed the glimmer of hope that rose in his heart, and stared intently at Dumbledore.
The old man opposite him didn't beat around the bush and stated his thoughts directly, "I hope you will come and teach ancient magic script. I wonder if you would be willing?"
"Of course I would!" Felix blurted out, then slowed his pace. "Yes, I would. But, Professor Barbling..."
"Ah, Bathilda," Dumbledore murmured, seemingly sighing, before explaining, "she has served Hogwarts for over fifty years, and in recent years she has longed to take a break and see the changes in the world."
"Take a break? You mean I should temporarily take over the ancient runes? For a year? Or a semester?" Felix frowned slightly; this was not what he wanted.
Hogwarts has an incredibly rich library, and becoming a professor there would bring numerous advantages. He's not looking for a year or two, he's aiming for at least five or ten years, isn't he?
Dumbledore chuckled, his silver hair and beard trembling. He pointed out in a serious tone, "Felix, Professor Barbling is not a pure wizard. She has a magical bloodline, which makes her—see time differently from us."
Other bloodlines? Felix recalled Professor Baburin's appearance; she seemed unchanged from enrollment to graduation...
Is she mixed-race? Mixed-race with other humanoid races?
That's possible. Such beings are not uncommon in the magical world; the most common hybrids are those between humans and giants, Veela, dwarves, or fairies. As far as he knows, there's more than one at the school.
Before he could come to a conclusion, Dumbledore continued, "Professor Barbling considers taking a sabbatical for ten or twenty years to be perfectly normal. In fact, when she complained to me about not having a sabbatical, she recommended a few alternative names, including you, Felix."
Felix suddenly realized that he and the professor had a good relationship. Although he couldn't choose ancient magic script in sixth and seventh grade, he had always consulted her during his self-study and they had kept in touch even after graduation.
It can be said that, apart from Dumbledore, Professor Barbling was the only professor who maintained regular contact with him after graduation.
Professor Dumbledore said, "Your arrival will make Professor Barbling very happy. She has accumulated many wishes over the years, enough to fill an entire parchment."
Felix, seeing such a good opportunity, naturally nodded vigorously in agreement.
As Felix walked out of the principal's office, he breathed a long sigh of relief. Although the interview had been somewhat bumpy, the result was ultimately good. He was finally back home.
The heart of the British wizarding world—Hogwarts. This time, as a professor.
After calming himself down, he returned to Professor McGonagall's office and happened to see the figure of a phoenix Patronus disappear. It dawned on him that Dumbledore had already informed Professor McGonagall of the results through the Patronus.
Sure enough, Professor McGonagall adjusted her glasses. "I've already received a message from Dumbledore, Felix—no, I should call you Professor Hyp now."
"You can still call me Felix; I will always be your student."
Professor McGonagall gave a slight humph. "Professor Snape might not be so pleased."
Felix scratched his head; he had once infuriated Snape. But McGonagall quickly moved on from the topic. She waved her wand, and a dozen or so parchments flew out of a large cabinet in her office. These parchments were neatly stacked, reflecting their owner's serious and meticulous nature.
"This includes your class schedule, student list, duties and rights, purchased items, and other things I personally believe you'll need. Of course, the most pressing question is whether your teaching materials need to be changed?"
"Textbook?" Felix asked, somewhat puzzled.
“That’s right, the textbooks,” McGonagall repeated. “Many professors have their own teaching philosophies, and Hogwarts encourages that in principle, so they can decide for themselves how to teach, the ratio of theory to practice, and of course, the selection of textbooks.”
McGonagall glanced at him. "I know you also wrote a book in ancient runes."
Felix understood, considered for a moment, and decided not to make any changes. "Professor Barbling's teaching materials are excellent; I benefited greatly from them when I was in school."
"Alright." Professor McGonagall seemed noncommittal about his action, but Felix heard her mutter something softly, too quietly for him to hear, though it seemed to involve another professor.
"If only... the professor were like that..."
Felix didn't want to ask, as he was a rookie professor and didn't want to cause any trouble before officially starting his job.
As a Slytherin, he was very purposeful in his actions.
After a moment, Professor McGonagall looked up at the motionless Felix and said, "Professor Hyp, you can leave now. We will mail you a formal letter of appointment and your start date. Any additional information will also be included with the letter."
Felix smiled. "Professor McGonagall, I'd like to do some more preparation. You know, although I have some achievements in the field of magic, I am still very young, and I have no relevant teaching experience. In this respect, you are very experienced, and I really need your guidance."
Felix wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but he noticed that Professor McGonagall seemed to smile. Of course, it could also be that her lips twitched; he’d heard that people who always had a serious face were prone to facial paralysis.
Felix's mind was filled with nonsensical thoughts.
"Felix, you're always so polite," McGonagall seemed to remark, but then politely stopped what she was doing. "What would you like to know?"
"I'd like to see the student information first, such as academic performance, the number of students in each year of each house, some outstanding or well-known junior wizards, and it would be even better if there were evaluations of each individual."
Professor McGonagall glanced at him, silently waved her wand, and the cabinet door swung open with a clatter, releasing a shower of parchment scrolls. Felix quickly pulled out his wand and waved it gently, turning a quill on the table into a long table.
Professor McGonagall understood and stacked the parchment scrolls on the long table. "Fantastic transfiguration."
"I can't do without your guidance," Felix said modestly.
"I remember that your reputation in Transfiguration wasn't very high in your first three years of school."
Felix felt a little embarrassed. At the time, he was busy subduing the seventh-grade snakes and didn't have enough time to practice spells every day, let alone time to practice Transfiguration. That was good enough.
It was only later that he picked up Transfiguration again.
Professor McGonagall didn't dwell on his grades because she was well aware of Felix's situation at the time. To be honest, she had always been critical of using the Sorting Hat for sorting, and for a long time she believed that Felix should have been sorted into Gryffindor.
With that reckless, cough cough, brave spirit, who would believe he wasn't a Gryffindor!
Even among the lion cubs, he was the most reckless!
"Here is the information you requested, but there are no comments. Regarding some outstanding young wizards, I can only speak from my own perspective and mention some names of Gryffindor House."
"That's very useful too." Felix wasn't picky.
"Oliver Wood and Percy Weasley in sixth grade, Arya Spinnet and Angelina Jensen in fourth grade, Hermione Granger in second grade," McGonagall then pursed her lips, "and of course the Weasley twins, Fred and George. Good heavens, if only they put half that energy of their mischief into their studies..."
"Is that all? I remember the famous Harry Potter also enrolled, right? Isn't he in Gryffindor?" Felix asked curiously, for in both his past and present lives, that name had been ringing in his ears.
"Harry..." It was clear that this name was causing her even more distress.
