Medieval: Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Chapter 7: Nomad Camp
The Roma, also known as the Romani people, are a nomadic group that originated in Iran in the 10th century and migrated outwards.
Their traditional way of life is to wander in caravans and perform for a living. They travel across borders, and people from various regions join them along the way. Rather than being a single ethnic group, they are more accurately described as a collection of people with the same philosophy of life.
In the closed Middle Ages, people were treated as private property by noble lords, like herds of livestock, with their living areas strictly controlled. Some people, unwilling to be bound, sought to escape these constraints. This explains why the Roma people spread across Europe from Iran to the Balkans, then to the Hungarian Plain, Bohemia, the Holy Roman Empire, France, and Spain, their population growing to 1200 million by the new century.
As a people born with a wandering spirit, they possess an innate romantic yearning for and talent related to wandering. The bass is used to depict the sunshine of Southern Europe; the accordion expresses the loneliness of the snowfields; songs convey the bewilderment and suffering of the Germanic forests... Each person expresses their spirit with their passion and fervor.
This was Peter's most immediate impression upon arriving at the nomadic camp—a sense of warmth and exuberance. This was an atmosphere absent in the rigid, dogmatic lordly villages.
Peter couldn't help but glance at the Gypsy girls in the camp, in particular. Their nomadic and mixed-race backgrounds gave these girls a unique charm.
"My lord, these vagrant women are not to be trifled with. Rumor has it that they practice divination and witchcraft, and may even cast black magic on the men they fancy, turning handsome men into their slaves, forcing them to run away from home in the middle of the night to wander with the caravan!"
Tom, the follower dressed in military attire and leather armor, with a short sword hanging from his belt, whispered a reminder.
Jerry loyally added, "Sir, you are so handsome, we must be careful."
"Ahem, it's alright. I am under the watchful eye and protection of God, and I am not afraid of any dark magic. If they dare to offend me, I will punish them severely with the scourge of God and purify their bodies and minds."
Peter stubbornly insisted.
Unfortunately, their whispers were overheard by a sharp-eared girl who immediately spoke up angrily: "You arrogant locals, your confined lives have made you unable to understand the meaning of life. When you see a pretty girl, all you have left are dirty, filthy fantasies? We, the excellent Gypsy girls, would never look at guys like you with your heads full of lewd nonsense!"
A girl wearing a green striped fitted long dress, with jet-black hair styled in two braids, spoke up in dissatisfaction. She was surrounded by a group of female companions, who seemed to be of high status.
Tom and Jerry immediately stepped in front of Peter, saying with displeasure, "Woman, step back! Don't even think about seducing our handsome lord! Do you know who he is? You think you can just come up and talk to him? He's the powerful Knight Griffin! His lord's noble status is not something you can approach!"
"My lord? I don't see the nobility in someone who can't even get a full set of armor, but his appearance... is indeed very handsome."
The girl put her hands on her hips, a mocking look on her face, while her female companions chuckled, their eyes sneaking glances at Peter.
Peter was tall, with a rugged face, fair skin, and deep, melancholic blue eyes. His only flaw was perhaps his slightly conspicuous red hair.
In medieval Europe, there was also a hierarchy of disdain regarding hair color.
The most noble hair is black curly hair, because it is proof of Roman ancestry.
Secondly, there is golden hair, which has also become a symbol of nobility.
Then came pale yellow, light brown, and silver, which were the traditional hair colors of the Germanic people.
Next is red hair, because that represents mixed Celtic barbarian blood.
If Peter didn't possess blue eyes, which are uncommon among ordinary people, his red hair alone would have seriously cast doubt on his status as a wandering knight.
"Beautiful lady, please forgive my attendants' overreaction. Their loyalty is commendable, but your beauty far surpasses that of ordinary people, making them doubt their own eyes, fearing I might be captivated by you. Of course, I also have my concerns, so could you perhaps temporarily toned down your dazzling presence, allowing me to speak with you calmly as an ordinary person?"
Peter came to the camp to learn swordsmanship, not to cause trouble; he didn't want to get into trouble for no reason. So he spoke to the girl opposite him in a slightly admiring tone.
"Ah, his voice is so pleasant to hear."
"He's so gentlemanly, Marika, please forgive him."
"Yes, yes, handsome people must have kind hearts."
"The knight's smile is so sweet. Did he say anything offensive just now? I don't remember at all."
Sure enough, whether in modern times or the Middle Ages, it's a world that judges by appearances. These girls have already started actively making excuses for Peter.
"Alright then, although I don't care at all about your compliments on my looks, I'll let it slide since you're so sincere. Also, I'm Marika, the daughter of the commander of the homeless camp. It's a pleasure to meet you."
The girl in the green dress suppressed her anger and instead took the initiative to introduce herself.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Marika. I am Peter Griffin, a wandering knight searching for redemption."
Peter was pleased that he had resolved a pointless dispute with his eloquence. At the same time, he remembered who the girl in front of him was; she was the female protagonist of a major quest series in the game, "Love, Freedom, and Glory."
In short, the plot of this mission is that Marika, the daughter of the commander of the nomadic camp, has fallen in love with Bohush, a villager in Semi Village. According to Gypsy tradition, a woman's chastity and reputation are very important, similar to the saying "starving to death is a small matter, but losing one's chastity is a big matter." Therefore, the commander sent a messenger to Semi Village to discuss the marriage of his children with the woodcutter's mother.
As a result, Bohush's mother disapproved of her son's love for a Gypsy girl. So she called the villagers, humiliated the commander's messenger, drove him out of the village, and insulted Gypsies as rats in the street, destined to wander the world and die a miserable death. She told them not to even think about seducing her obedient son.
When the news reached the wandering camp, the commander's two sons, Guy and Tipo, went to confront Bohush in a fit of rage. The conversation was not going well, and in a fit of anger, Guy drew his dagger and stabbed Bohush twice.
Bohush's screams attracted the villagers of Semi, who rushed out of their homes with pitchforks and sickles to fight the vagrant youth. Woodcutters from the woodcutter camp also joined the battle with axes, defeating the vagrant youth, killing the older brother Guy, and capturing the younger brother Tipo.
Amid the chaos of the battle, the Gypsy girl Marika, supporting the blood-soaked Bohush, chose to elope.
The commander of the refugee camp, who was skilled in divination, said as soon as he saw the game's protagonist, "I've seen you in my dreams! You're the one from my dreams who helped me find my daughter!"
In the process of completing the mission, the protagonist also understands why the mission is called "Love, Freedom, Glory".
Marika, a homeless girl, is willing to do anything for love.
Villager Bohush longs to escape the monotonous life of a serf and strive for freedom.
Guy and Tipo clashed violently to prevent their family's honor from being tarnished.
In a sense, neither of them was wrong. But together, they created a tragedy of one death and one injury.
Especially when Marika stole the vagrant pass.
According to medieval kingdom laws, Gypsy migrants who wanted to travel or stay in the territories of feudal lords needed a kingdom pass to prove their identity; otherwise, they would be considered illegal and arrested as serfs.
The theft of the travel permits was like a sword hanging over the heads of everyone in the refugee camp. If the people around them found out, the feudal lords would lead their guards to arrest and sell them. The people in the refugee camp would also flee in order to protect themselves. It was a matter of life and death.
This is also why the commander dared not let anyone else in the camp search for his daughter, but instead chose the protagonist, an outsider.
If the mission is completed, there will be a relatively perfect ending: Marika and Bohush return to the nomadic camp and wander freely with the caravan, everyone singing and dancing around the campfire. But the protagonist doesn't receive many Grosshins; he only receives the spiritual reward of leaving quietly after accomplishing his task, keeping his achievements hidden.
This is similar to someone running around doing everything for the female lead, only to have her end up marrying someone else.
Damn it, in real life, it's best to do fewer tasks like this!
Or, you could be the one entering the bridal chamber instead.
