Medieval: Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Chapter 5: Midnight Raid
Shita Lake is a long and narrow lake shaped like a crescent moon, stretching from north to south. Its water source is mainly mountain streams on both sides, and the water is clear and abundant with fish and shrimp.
To the west of Shita Lake lies an undeveloped hilly woodland, densely covered with spruce, pine, beech, and oak trees. Wild boars, wolves, rabbits, pheasants, roe deer, and deer roam freely in the forest.
This hilly area should have been an important source of resources for the territory, but because it was too far from Troski Castle and patrols could not reach it, it became an excellent hiding place for poachers and bandits.
Old Blind and his gang were camped in the mountains near the crossroads in the hills.
The haphazardly constructed shacks, the beds made of weeds, the benches made of rotten wood, and the garbage and excrement not far from the stove all showed the slovenliness and disorder of this bandit camp.
After Old Blind and his four bandits in cloth armor brought the loot they had plundered from the caravan during the day back to their camp, neither the left nor the right leader returned, but this did not arouse their suspicion.
In their imagination, their leader might have led his men deep into the forest, perhaps even spending the night there. As for the possibility of the guard escaping or fighting back, it was almost nonexistent. Their leader was a terrifying bandit nicknamed "Dog Nose"—how could a seriously wounded man have escaped?
Instead of keeping their leader away, the five bandits began to secretly hoard their belongings and indulged in drinking until midnight, leaving no one on watch.
It makes sense, considering the quality of medieval bandits; it would be too much to ask them to maintain discipline like taking turns keeping watch at night.
Under the cover of darkness, Peter was thankful that he didn't have night blindness. Following the map in his memory, he climbed hills and slopes in the dark, and finally found the bandits' camp around 3 a.m., where he saw five bandits huddled in a shack.
The clattering sound of his chainmail made his heart pound, fearing he might wake the bandits. But removing the chainmail was absolutely out of the question. This sense of security outweighed the risk of waking the bandits.
Peter crouched down and crept up to one of the bandits, drew his dagger from his waist, and prepared to execute the bandits one by one, just like the assassination moves in the game.
In a head-on confrontation, anger surges, adrenaline spikes, the mind goes blank, and when wielding swords, one sees only the enemy, not a single life.
In close-range assassination, without any enhancements, only the sound of snoring close at hand makes one's thoughts become complicated. Only then do you truly feel that you are taking someone's life.
No man is a hero without ruthlessness! A man who isn't vicious can't stand firm!
In medieval Europe, where the strong preyed on the weak, kindness and compassion were reserved for one's friends, while cold-bloodedness and cruelty were one's armor against enemies!
kill!
After mentally preparing himself, Peter took a deep breath, his eyes narrowed, and with his powerful right hand he covered the mouth and nose of the thug on the ground, while with his other hand he plunged the dagger into the man's throat.
"Waaah"
The bandits on the ground whimpered and tried to struggle, but were held down tightly and died within two seconds.
"Kill a cloth-armored bandit, experience points +20"
Then they used the same method to kill two more bandits.
"Kill a cloth-armored bandit, experience points +20"
"Kill a cloth-armored bandit, experience points +20"
"Reeking of alcohol and sleeping so soundly, you deserve to be wiped out."
Having gained experience in assassinations, Peter was much more relaxed. In the last shack, seeing two bandits huddled together for warmth, he sheathed his dagger, drew his one-handed sword from his waist, and plunged the tip of the sword into the neck of the bandit on the outside.
"what!"
The dying bandit screamed, waking up the bandits on the inside.
"What? Who is it?"
Just as the bandits on the inside were about to get up to look for weapons, Peter grabbed them by the neck, dragged them out of the shack, and slammed them hard onto the muddy ground outside.
The embers of the campfire outside were still burning, reflecting off Peter, who stood there covered in blood and holding a sword, looking like a demon.
"Don't kill me, don't kill me..."
The last bandit shouted for mercy, hoping to wake his companions for help.
"I am the chief's confidant. If you kill me, our chief will surely avenge me. How about we become friends? I'll give you all the camp's valuables..."
When the bandits saw the bodies of the other four people in the camp, they were immediately plunged into despair, and their feigned pleas for mercy turned into genuine cries of despair.
"Your leader? No, he's dead."
Peter laughed. His laughter only made him look more menacing.
"Impossible! The chieftain is known for his keen sense of smell, even more so than a hunting dog. You are... a guard from that caravan?"
The bandits also saw Peter's face clearly and found it even harder to accept.
"Otherwise, how do you think I found this camp? It was because your people couldn't withstand the torture after I captured them and confessed."
Facing this last enemy, Peter prepared to extract some more information from him.
"Damn that dog-nose! I knew it! That bastard deserves to die a horrible death! He betrayed us even on his deathbed. He'll definitely go to the deepest hell and have his tongue ripped out by the devils!"
The bandits were furious; sometimes the hardest thing to accept is being betrayed by one's own people.
"Why did you intercept my caravan?"
Peter then got down to business.
"We are robbers, so naturally we have to intercept and kill others to make a living."
"That's what the bandit replied."
"Snapped!"
Peter flicked his wrist, and the scabbard of his one-handed sword slammed into the bandit's face, making him understand his position.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, sir. I'm just a lowly henchman. All the operations were planned by the leader and deputy leader. I did whatever they told me to do."
The bandit immediately straightened his posture and knelt on the ground to answer seriously.
"And what about your deputy leader?"
"That's the one who's blind in one eye."
When questioned, the bandit pointed to a nearby spot where an old, blind man lay face up, mouth agape, blood gushing from his neck.
Peter coughed lightly to cover his embarrassment. He didn't know any of the bandits; he'd already killed them in the dark, and now it was too late to back out. So he continued, "Did you take all the looted goods back to camp?"
"Yes, sir."
The bandits realized that their opponent was a ruthless character, and that if they wanted to survive, they had better cooperate.
"Are all the valuables here?"
Peter pressed on with his questions.
"They're all here, sir. The clothes, belts, backpacks, weapons, and armor worn by the caravan members are all here."
The bandit answered cautiously.
"Liar! The caravan manager's purse, the travel documents for the territory, the wagons, packhorses, and riding horses are all gone. Tell me, where did they go!"
Peter pressed the tip of his sword against the man's throat and shouted threats.
Peter's hazy memory is that when the caravan was attacked, he was at the very end of the group. He only heard the sound of horses' hooves, and as soon as he turned around, he was hit on the head with a hammer. He didn't even see who the attacker was.
Their caravan consisted of three wagons, six packhorses, and a chestnut horse ridden by the caravan manager. The manager had brought three hundred Grossens to purchase marble, but none of these were present in this shabby bandit camp.
If there were other camps besides the bandits, then the most likely explanation is that there were others involved in intercepting the caravan and taking the biggest slice of the pie.
"I don't know, sir, I really don't know. I was just a lowly henchman. I was at the very back, following the leader as he charged out. I cut down a guard, and I even pulled out his gold tooth. The leader rewarded me with a Grossian..."
The bandits, intimidated by the sharp sword, became incoherent with fear.
"Who else participated in the ambush with you? Did they have warhorses? What was the leader's name?"
Peter continued to question loudly.
"I don't know them. They call me a lowly commoner. Only the chief is allowed to approach them. They took the horses and carriages, and the chief said it was their due. They even call the other party 'young master'."
The bandit tried hard to recall.
"Young Master? What are their distinguishing features? Like the patterns on their clothes or shields?"
Peter frowned and asked.
"I don't know, I really don't know. I can't even get close. Please believe me, please believe me."
The bandit tried to recall the events, but all he found was emptiness.
"Okay, I believe you."
Seeing that he could get no more information from the other man, Peter thrust the tip of his sword straight into his throat.
"Then you're useless."
Peter wiped his one-handed sword on the other man's clothes and then sheathed it.
Having wiped out the bandits, his identity would be temporarily unknown in this Troski territory. In this way, he could use his fabricated identity as a wandering knight without any scruples.
This can be considered as him achieving a social mobility for himself.
"Kill a cloth-armored bandit, experience points +20"
"Character level up to level 3, attribute points +5, skill points +5, talent points +1."
The upgrade notification brought Peter back to reality. He continued his strategy of prioritizing physical strength, allocating 3 points to Strength, 2 points to Agility, and 5 points to Swordsmanship.
For the 1 talent point, I chose "Cleanse Body and Mind" from the Vitality attribute.

Remaining points: 0 attribute points, 0 skill points, 0 talent points.
-----
The "Cleanse Body and Mind" talent is very valuable in the early game when you're short on money and have few ways to recover your health.
Even so, this talent cannot replace the effect of potions. Because potions can be consumed during battle, but you can't go to bathe during battle.
"Awoo~"
In that dark and vast forest, the howls of wolves rose and fell.
Peter knew that there was a pack of wolves a few miles from the bandits' camp. He had deliberately avoided that area when he went up the mountain in the dark, but the sounds and smell of blood here must have attracted the attention of the wolves.
We must leave as soon as possible. Fighting wolves in the dark, even in armor, would be extremely unwise.
With that in mind, Peter quickly looted all the valuables in the camp.
"Underpants, jacket? Take them!"
"Cloth armor, swords, take them!"
"Spears and arrows, take them!"
"Wooden cabinet, iron lock, pry it open!"
It's not that I'm acting like a master thief; it's just that the lock is right there!
After some looting, they acquired more than a dozen complete sets of cloth armor, swords and spears, and a total of 56 Groshen silver and copper coins.
A huge windfall!
Although war is a dirty business, it's undeniable that it makes a fortune!
